Abstract
A novel
digital
modulation scheme isproposed
that allows to increase the data ratecompared
to uncoded modulation when the out-of-band power is fixed. If the data rate remainsunchanged,
thiscorresponds
to a bandwidth reduction that is achievedby shaping
thesignal spectrum by
the introduction of correlation in the transmitter. This correlation has to be resolved in the receiver
by
a maximum likelihood sequence estimator. Since the sequence of transmittedsymbols
can berepresented by
atrellis,
this modulation scheme is called correlative trellis coded modulation(C-TCM).
Thetransmitter is first
optimized
withrespect
tobandwidth-efficiency,
i.e. it isdesigned
tominimize the
resulting
out-of-band power. Wherepossible,
asecondary optimization
with
respect
topower-efficiency
isperformed,
such that thesignal-to-noise
ratiorequired
at the receiver to
guarantee
acertain error rate is minimum.The
optimization
shows that foran encoder with memory onethe well-known modu¬lation schemes
duobinary
and dicode areoptimum.
Themappersthat leadtoaminimum average orpeak
power arepresented.
The method derived for the
optimization
of the transmitter isapplicable
for any number ofdelay
cells. In this report wepresent
results for encoders with up to fivedelay cells,
wherenew modulation schemes withtime-limited andNyquist pulse shaping
filters are found. It is shown that the
optimum
transmitters can also berepresented
aspartial
responsesystems.
Considering
thepower-efficiency
of the C-TCMscheme,
it is shownthat the remark¬able increase of data rate ofup to 300%
compared
to uncodedquaternary
modulation is realized at the cost of about 1.5 dB additionalsignal
power perdelay
cell.Compar¬
ing
C-TCM with uncodedM-ary quadrature amplitude modulation, however,
C-TCMallows to increase the data rate
by
up to 0.5bit/s/Hz
for agiven performance
or toreduce the
signal
powerby
about 1 dB for agiven
data rate.3
Kurzfassung
Ein
neuartiges digitales
Modulationsverfahren wirdbeschrieben,
das dieErhohung

gegeniiber
uncodierter Modulationerlaubt,
wenndieAusserbandleistung
fest-gehalten
wird. Diesentspricht
einer Bandbreitenreduktion bei konstanterDatenrate,
die dadurch erreichtwird,
indem im Sender dasSignalspektrum
durch Einfuhren vonKorrelation
geformt wird;
diese Korrelation muss imEmpfanger
mit Hilfe eines Maxi¬mum Likelihood
Sequenzschatzers
wiederriickgangig gemacht

In diesem Berichtprasentieren
