Language
Because the general level of education is fairly high among citizens in Denmark, many people speak English. As such, when you go shopping and visit restaurants, it is safe to as- sume that people will understand at least some English, and you may ask them to translate menus, prices, etc. Some Danes will also speak German, French, and/or Spanish, but English is the second language spoken by most Danes.
Prices
Denmark is fairly expensive compared to most other countries. Part of the explanation is that Denmark has a set minimum wage that is quite high (110 kr. per hour = $17 per hour), as well as having a general tax level
that is also high (e.g., income tax is approx.
50%). Your bills also include a 25% VAT, which is added to all goods and services.
Payment
Almost all shops, cafes, and restaurants ac- cept credit cards. However, some credit cards are not accepted in all shops down- town (you will need to inquire before pur- chasing). If you need to exchange money, Nordea on “Strøget” exchanges money (alt- hough with an added fee). However, make sure that you bring along your passport, as the bank needs this for their records. It is also possible to make a withdrawal from cash machines (located all around the city cen- ter). Visa and Mastercard can be used for withdrawal in almost all cash machines, while American Express and Euro Card can also be used in cash machines from
WELCOME TO AARHUS!
In this mini-guide, we have included some information that we thought would be helpful in making your stay in Aarhus as pleasant as possible. There are several categories of in- formation, including: Language, prices, payment, transportation, accommodation, eating out, shopping, tourism, museums and attractions, and health. If you need further infor- mation, please ask at the information desk at the conference.
Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark with around 250,000 citizens. Due to Aarhus University, there are a very large number of students in the city, giving it a very young population compared to other cities of the same size. With more than 45,000 students, the university plays an important role in everyday life in Aarhus. Although not a large city, there are several tourist attractions, among the most prominent being the Old Town (Den Gamle By), Moesgård Prehistoric Museum, ARoS Art Museum, the summer residence of Queen Margrethe (Marselisborg), as well as walks along the seaside. For more tourist in- formation about Aarhus, see the official tourism homepage: www.visitaarhus.com
“Danske Bank” (the accepted cards are al- ways shown on the machine).
Transportation
There are several transportation options in Aarhus (and in Denmark more generally) from which you may choose:
Car-rental: If you wish to rent a car, try Eu- ropcar ((+45) 89 33 11 11), Hertz ((+45) 70 33 66 99), and Avis ((+45) 70 24 77 30).
Bring your driver’s license, passport, and credit card when collecting the car. These three companies typically have special of- fers for foreign citizens (e.g., renting a car for three days may come to approx. 1200-1500 kr. ($180-225), including insurance, tax, and free kilometers).
Buses: The public transportation in Aarhus is generally reliable, although sometimes with minor delays. Most buses will run every 15 minutes during the day hours and every 20- 30 minutes during evening hours, stopping around midnight. There are also night buses available after midnight, however, keep in mind that the fare for riding a bus late at
night is double the price, regardless of how far you travel.
One normal trip (prior to midnight) will typi- cally cost you 20 kr. ($3), as long as you travel within the city center. You pay by en- tering at the middle of the bus (or sometimes at the back) and using the automated pay machine located there. (The machine only accepts cash). If you plan to travel a lot by public transport, you may consider buying a Multi Trip Ticket (10 charges). A multi trip ticket in Midttrafik app is cheaper than a sin- gle ticket, and it can be the best ticket if you plan to travel a few times with bus and Let- banen. Another option is the Tourist ticket (24, 48 or 72 hours), which offers unlimited travel in all of Central Denmark Region on Midttrafik's buses (including night buses), and Letbanen. Tourist ticket is not valid for travel with other trains. Prices vary accord- ing to the duration of the ticket (24 hours = 160 kr; 48 hours = 240 kr; 72 hours = 320 kr.
The Tourist ticket cannot be purchased on the bus or at Letbanen's stations, but must be purchased on the Midttrafik app.
The following buses stop near the University:
1A, 5A, 12, 13, 100, and 200.
Letbanen (Aarhus light rail): operates be- tween the central station in Aarhus and Aarhus University Hospital and also stops at Aarhus University with six departures per hour. You have to buy a ticket before you get on Letbanen. You can buy a single ticket in the ticket machine (rejsekort ticket machine) at one of Letbanen's stations. You
can only pay with card - not with cash. You cannot buy tickets in Letbanen.
https://www.midttrafik.dk/english/plan- your-journey/letbanen/
See this travel homepage for more infor- mation: www.midttrafik.dk/in-english.aspx
For additional travel information, you can also download a free and easy to use travel application for your phone from www.rejse- planen.dk. It has all the information about public transportation you might need. You can enter your desired destination and your starting location and a guide will help you find your way. For an English version, you can push the “flag” in the right-hand corner.
This application works everywhere in Den- mark.
Airport bus to/from Aarhus: There are shuttle buses between Aarhus and Aarhus Airport in direct connection with the arriving and departing flights. The trip from the central train station in Aarhus to the airport is ap- prox. 45 minutes. The bus also has a stop at Randersvej, located close to the University and CON AMORE. The bus number for this shuttle is 925X. Tickets are purchased on board from the driver, and can be paid with Danish kroner, Norwegian kroner, US dollars, English pounds, or Euros. Visacard, Master- card, and JCB may be used as well.
Taxis: For taxi service, contact Aarhus Taxi ((+45) 89 48 48 48). Note that travelling by taxi in Denmark is quite expensive (e.g., dur- ing the day there is a starting fee of 33 kr
($5) followed by a charge of 8 kr ($1.20) per kilometer thereafter, while the rate is higher at night).
Bicycles: In Denmark, many people prefer to use bicycles, and as you may have noticed there are separate lanes for bicycles along many streets in Aarhus. Please look out be- fore you cross these lanes, as many cyclists go fairly fast. Also, look out for cyclists when you enter or leave a bus, as they are not al- ways prone to stop for bus passengers.
If you’d like to travel by bicycle while you are visiting Aarhus, you may use the “city-bikes”.
These are publically available bicycles lo- cated at several different bike stands in Aar- hus (for example by Radisson Blu and Stak- laden). They are easily recognized because the wheels are used for advertising. It is in principle free to borrow a city bike, but you will need a 20 kr coin for the coin slot. When you return the city bike at one of the prede- termined bicycle stations, you will get your coin back.
See this homepage for more information:
www.aarhus.dk/sitecore/content/Sub- sites/AarhusBycykel/Home/Eng- lish.aspx?sc_lang=da
Walking: If you like to walk, Aarhus is almost perfect. The distances between the univer- sity, the city center, and other places of in- terest are not too great (e.g., from the univer- sity to City Hall is approx. 3 kilometers). Aar- hus is considered to be a very safe city, and you can safely walk in most areas of Aarhus even during the evening and night hours.

Eating out
Aarhus has a large number of restaurants and cafes to choose from when eating out.
In addition to restaurants that serve tradi- tional and modern Danish cuisine, there are numerous other types of restaurants, includ- ing Italian, French, Chinese, Greek, Japa- nese, Thai, Indian, and Spanish. Eating out typically takes place around 7 pm in Den- mark, and most restaurants close at 10 pm.
One popular eating activity in Aarhus (prob- ably due to the large population of students) is having brunch at one of the cafes along the riverside or in the older part of the city center (“Latinerkvarteret” or the Latin Quar- ter). The cafes will typically have a brunch/breakfast menu that is served from 9 am to 1 pm. They do tend to be a bit over- priced, especially the cafes along the river- side, but if the weather is nice it is possible to have your meal outside.
Because the minimum wage is fairly high in Denmark, the people working in the restau- rants are not heavily dependent on tips.
Thus, in most places you do not have to leave a tip. In nice restaurants you may wish to leave a tip, but typically somewhere be- tween 3-5 % will be fine (perhaps up to a maximum of 10% in very nice restaurants).
During the weekends, it is often necessary to make a reservation, and it is a good idea at all times if you are going to be more than 3- 4 people. Most restaurants and cafes will have a home page where you can study their menu and prices beforehand and also find the contact information.
On the following pages is a list of suggested restaurants, cafes, wine and beer bars, and other options you might consider while stay- ing in Aarhus, but they are by no means the only options available.
Danish Food
For lunch, try “Rådhuscafeen”
(Sønder Allé 3, (+45) 86 12 37 74), which serves traditional Danish food, including
“smørrebrød” (open sandwiches), a typical Danish lunch item. These sandwiches basi- cally consist of dark rye bread with a gen- erous topping, which may include different assortments of fish, shrimp, eggs, pates,
and/or different cold cuts. The lunch is rel- atively heavy, as is the case with much tra- ditional Danish food.

For dinner, try ”Nordisk Spisehus” (M.P.
Bruunsgade 31, (+45) 86 17 70 99), where you can choose between 2-3 starters, main dishes, and desserts, all based on Nordic in- gredients and cooking traditions.

Rooftop
The Salling Rooftop is a sensational roof terrace with a café and an urban oasis on the roof of the Salling department store in the centre of Aarhus. From the rooftop there are fabulous panoramic views of ARoS Art Museum, Aarhus Cathedral, the Aarhus Ø city quarter, and many other pop- ular Aarhus locations. On top of the roof, 25 meters above the pedestrianised high street 'Strøget', you can step out on a glass platform – if you dare! – and enjoy marvel- lous views of Aarhus from above from new and spectacular angles. Opening hours for
the Salling ROOFTOP are the same as the department store's; and admission to the roof terrace is free.

Shopping
The city center in Aarhus, and especially
“Strøget” (the main pedestrian street), have a variety of shops with clothing, sports gear, kitchen ware, books, etc. (e.g., “Kristian F.
Møller” at “Store Torv” sells books in English).
Another place to go shopping is the older city center – “Latinerkvarteret”, consisting of the following streets: Badstuegade, Klostergade, Volden, Studsgade, Borggade, Rosensgade, and Graven. Here you will find smaller and more specialized shops. There is only one in-door shopping mall – “Bruuns Galleri” located at the back of the train sta- tion (“Banegårdspladsen”). Shops are mostly open on weekdays 10 am-5.30 pm (some until 6 pm), and on Saturdays and Sundays 10 am-3 pm (some until 4 pm).
