Welcome to the 5thInternational Dominique Dormont Conference

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we are pleased to welcome you in Paris for the fifth Dominique Dormont International Conference. This annual conference is in memory of the spirit of Dominique Dormont and his dedication to research on pathogenesis and treatment of chronic infectious diseases.

The topic of this 5th event is " Mother-to-child transmitted viral diseases: from

transmission to children care ".

It is devoted to cover mother-to-child transmission and pediatric viral infections, such as Human Cytomegalovirus, Hepatitis C Virus and Human Immunodeficiency Virus, and also other chronic infectious agents, close to Dominique Dormont's wide interest. The topics of the sessions selected by the organizing committee span from basic research to prevention and therapy. Attention is given to viral and host determinants of mother-to-child transmission, as well as means of prevention and control of transmission and disease in children, with drugs, immunotherapy and vaccine. Emphasis is also on the immunological development of host defences at the maternal-fetal interface and, in the newborn, basic concepts to understand pathogenesis and clinical outcome. The interaction between basic scientists and clinicians interested in different pathogens is intended to encourage the exchange of knowledge and foster new collaborations.

Each session is introduced by a keynote lecture by an expert in the field followed by abstract driven presentations. An effort has been made for encouraging presentations from young investigators. An international Scientific Committee has selected the abstracts for this programme giving priority to original unpublished studies to share exciting and recent results. The poster sessions are a further opportunity for stimulating exchanges between senior and young scientists and clinicians. Scholarships have been selected according to the quality of the abstracts and allocated to fellows from resource limited countries. To facilitate interdisciplinary discussions we have limited the attendance to a group of 200 participants.

We hope you will enjoy your stay in Paris.

Christine ROUZIOUX, Daniel BÉQUET and Stéphane BLANCHE
