M A T E R I A L S A N D M E T H O D S

F o u r t y su sp e c t e d c a se s o f h u m a n r a b i e s w e r e a d m i t t e d t o t h e C a r l o s C h a g a s H o sp i t a l o f U F M G f r o m 1 9 6 3 t o 1 9 7 6 . M o s t o f t h e p a t i e n t s, a g e d 4 t o 5 8 y e a r s, h a d b e e n e x a - m i n e d p r e v i o u sl y a s o u t - p a t i e n t s b e c a u se o f a f a u l t y h i st o r y , i n w h i c h t h e r i g h t d i a g n o si s w a s m i sse d d u e t o l a c k o f m e n t i o n o f a n a n i m a l e x p o su r e . So m e p a t i e n t s w e r e a d m i t t ­ e d w i t h a c l e a r l y d e f i n e d p i c t u r e o f a c u t e e n c e p h a l i t i s, p r e su m a b l y d u e t o r a b i e s i n f e c ­ t i o n . A m o n g t h e se , f i v e w e r e p a t i e n t s r e f e r r e d f r o m p sy c h i a t r i c h o sp i t a i s b e c a u se o f a

p s y c h o p a t h o l o g i c c o n d i t i o n w h i c h d e t e r i o r a t - e d r a p i d l y a n d u n e x p e c t e d l y .

H i st o r i e s w e r e r e c o r d e d o n e sp e c i a l l y st a n - d a r d i z e d c a se sh e e t s a n d al i p a t i e n t s w e r e e x a - m i n e d b y t h e sa m e g r o u p . A l i p e r t i n e n t l a b o - r a t o r y f i n d i n g s w e r e c h a r t e d . T h e p r e l i m i n a r y d i a g n o si s w a s m a d e o n e p i d e m i o l o g i c a l a n d c l i n i c a i d a t a . O u t o f 4 0 c a se s, 7 w e r e a d m i t t e d t o t h e I n t e n si v e C a r e U n i t ( I C U ) t o e n su r e b o t h se d a t i v e p r o c e d u r e s a n d m a i n t e n a n c e o f v i t a l f u n c t i o n s 2 4 . T h i s g r o u p o f p a t i e n t s w a s sp e c i a l l y p r e p a r e d t o p r o v i d e c o n d i t i o n f o r i n t r a v i t a m v i r u s i so l a t i o n a n d se r o l o g i c a l p r o ­ c e d u r e s b y m e a n s o f t h e d i r e c t i m m u n o f l u o - r e sc e n c e t e st ( F A T ) , t h e i n d i r e c t m e t h o d o f F A T ( I F A T ) o f c o r n e a l i m p r e ssi o n s, sa l i v a , a n d c e r e b r o sp i n a l f l u i d , b e si d e s b l o o d a n t i - b o d y t i t r a t i o n 3 2 . T h e c o n f i r m a t i o n o f r a b i e s d i a g n o si s w a s p e r f o r m e d t h r o u g h su c k l i n g m o u se i n o c u l a t i o n a n d h i s t o p a t h o l o g i c a n d v i r o l o g i c st u d i e s o f a l i 4 0 a u t o p si e d p a t i e n t s. O u t õ f t h e 4 0 p a t i e n t s, 21 l i v e d i n t h e m e t r o p o l i t a m a r e a o f B e l o H o r i ­ z o n t e , a n d 1 8 c a m e f r o m d i f f e r e n t c o u n t i e s o f t h e h i n t e r l a n d o f t h e St a t e o f M i n a s G e ­ r a i s. S e x a n d a g e d i s t r i b u t i o n a r e s h o w n i n T a b l e I a n d I I .
