ANNUAL ACTIVITY REPORT, 2002

FOREWORD

During the year of 2002 the Research Centre has primarily focused on the improvement of collaboration with external researchers through participation in conferences and in common research projects. A higher number of papers and reports, namely publications in scientific journals, have been produced in co-operation with foreign researchers. Post-graduate training was defined as another major activity, with important funding support of FCT for the purpose of inviting prominent visiting professors. The collaboration with visiting professors is very important not only for the teaching of advanced microeconomics of the Doctoral program, but also for the supervision of post-graduate students and the co-operation with CETE’s members in scientific domains. Important progress in this domain was obtained due to a longer period of visit of Prof. Jean Gabszewicz.

CETE is committed with the development of cooperation in scientific research and advanced training, particularly within the framework of a joint venture between institutions from northern Portugal and Galicia. CETE participates via the Faculty of Economics.

Concerning facilities and infrastructures, the Datastream (a database on financial and accounting) has been available to all members. The Department of Statistics of the Ministry of Labour (DETEFP) is currently sending information about statistical products such as “Boletim de Estatística”, “Sínteses ao inquérito dos salários por

profissões na construção civil e obras públicas”, “Inquérito ao emprego estruturado”, “Balanço social”, and “Síntese das greves”. During 2002 it was not possible to

implement a local full access to the database Quadros de Pessoal, but negotiations will pursuit.

By the end of 2001 and beginning of 2002, CETE applied for the financing of new computer facilities, joining a consortium composed of CETE, CEMPRE and NIAAD, a sub-group of LIACC at the University of Porto, in the context of the Concurso Nacional

de Reequipamento Científico promoted by FCT. If the Computational Economics and Finance (CEF) Laboratory is developed, CETE is particularly committed to agricultural data projects and labour market projects requiring the management of large databases. During 2002, CETE has not been informed about further developments of this public contest.

CETE participated in the discussion of the project for a new building to host the FEP’s research centres. Putting researchers together will certainly improve research conditions. According to information of the UP, the new building is expected to be finished in 2004.

In 2002, particular attention has been paid to the debate of internal organization and improvement of research conditions. In this sense the Statutes of CETE have been approved in the General Assembly of 5 April 2002. The counseling of the unit has

beneficiated from the comments and suggestions of Prof. Jean Gabszewicz. Among other things, Prof. Gabszewicz insisted on implementing or improving a series of discussion papers and a program of seminars that should include the discussion of the work of doctoral students. Co-operation with other universities, namely Portuguese and Spanish, should be developed. Collective membership in international academic organizations is encouraged. The external visibility of the center is another critical point that should be improved.

The unit prepared a report of activity covering the years 1999-2001 and the planning for 2002-2004 to submit for FCT evaluation.

MEMBERSHIP AND ORGANISATION

Membership did changed in 2002. New members, José António Cardoso Moreira and Nuno Alexandre Bastos Moutinho have been invited to join CETE. Alberto Castro left in January 2002 to create a new research unit at the Catholic University.

António Osório could not participate in the unit activities in 2001, due to public office position.

Kevin S. Neil cooperated with CETE’s researchers.

Margarida Ruivo assured the management of the unit. Help in current administrative tasks is obtained by contracting services to ISFEP.
