Objectivos
Neste seminário propõe-se uma reflexão em torno a um conjunto de dinâmicas imperiais ocorridas na época moderna, no espaço asiático e atlântico, com especial incidência nas experiências ibéricas. Partindo de uma discussão inicial em torno a conceitos e historiografia (que será retomada na sessão final), o seminário desdobra-se em duas partes: uma primeira parte privilegia as experiências imperiais ocorridas no mundo asiático, aí se destacando temas como o das redes imperiais em contexto global, as culturas políticas concorrentes ou convergentes de diferentes impérios, a complexidade do governo das populações, as articulações entre espaço africano e o mundo do oceano índico, bem como questões relativas às articulações entre produção de saber e práticas imperiais; uma segunda parte ocupa-se da história e da historiografia dos impérios europeus do Atlântico, focando-se especialmente em alguns tópicos seleccionados. Desde logo, a própria génese e evolução dos conceitos de história atlântica. Depois, as modalidades específicas de colonização e ocupação territorial das Américas pelos diversos impérios europeus, bem como os seus fundamentos jurídicos e ideológicos. Em seguida, as conexões peculiares que neles se estabeleceram entre as populações indígenas, a emigração de europeus e o tráfico de escravos, pressupondo vínculos consolidados com África. Depois, ponderam-se as modalidades de constituição das identidades (sociais e territoriais) e de maturação dos conflitos. Por fim, discutem-se os processos de independência das colónias europeias das Américas, na sua diversidade e interdependência.
Metodologia e critérios de avaliação
A avaliação é contínua, requer um mínimo de 75% de presenças (9 sessões), e assenta em três componentes principais, com ponderações diferenciadas na nota final:
• Participação nas aulas: em cada sessão, cada aluno tem de apresentar duas questões relacionadas com as leituras obrigatórias (25% da nota final).
• Uma exposição crítica de um texto de leitura obrigatória numa das sessões que constituem o seminário. Cada exposição terá a duração máxima de 20 minutos (25% da nota final).
• Um ensaio (entre 2500 e 4000 palavras) que cruze aspectos do programa com temáticas associadas ao projecto de doutoramento (50% da nota final).
