TH

EDITION

NOVEMBER 13 TO 25, 2020

At the beginning of the year, a new virus came and changed our lives. A sort of shadow settled in between us and tomorrow, putting us to the test. We are living through a time of uncertainty, a time we cannot yet understand. We thought everything would go by quickly, only to learn that it would not. It is in the midst of this uncertainty that the 14th edition of LEFFEST will take place. However, it will do so with a deep certainty: that in dark times, art is a tool of resistance, a driving force

that can help us overcome this difficult period. As José Gil wrote: “there is nothing

left for us to do but to replace the fear that expropriates us from ourselves with the forces of life that (even if left unnoticed) powerfully connect us to others and to the world”. This is why it is our duty, now more than ever, to carry out this new edition of LEFFEST. Following the safety measures that spectators have been adopting over the past few months, we will do so as safely as possible. For you. For us.

The festival will symbolically open with the screening of Kubrick’s 2001 – A Space

Odyssey (which also inspired this edition’s poster), a film that touches the realm

of uncertainty, of confronting the unknown. With it, we embark on a voyage of multiple discoveries.

We will screen 11 films in Competition, directed by both renowned filmmakers whose work continuously surprises us, and emergent filmmakers from various countries and continents. Here you will find the most awaited premieres, some of which will only be shown theatrically at LEFFEST. From tributes and retrospectives dedicated to Paul Thomas Anderson, to the restored films of Wong Kar Wai, to artist and filmmaker Clément Cogitore, to the French Cinemathèque. Special screenings, including the pressing documentary Now, concerned with the fight for climate justice led by the younger generation, and “Noche de Ronda” by Salvador Sobral, an evening dedicated to Mexico through the presentation of two films and a concert. CinemArt, with a special emphasis on Matthew Barney’s new film Redoubt, in one of its rare public screenings this year.

Finally, three exceptional initiatives: the symposium “The Arts and the Public in the Post-Pandemic World” that, accompanied by film screenings and a concert by Piotr Anderszewski, will bring together filmmakers, artists, musicians, actors, writers, designers, choreographers and programmers in a conversation about the future we wish to build; “25th Aniversary of Sintra – UNESCO World Heritage”, where historians, architects, philosophers, geographers and urbanists will reflect on the new challenges imposed on cultural heritage; “Confronting the Gaze”, a thematic cycle of films that question cinema’s hegemonic gaze.

Despite the masks and the empty spaces between the seats, paraphrasing Herberto Helder, miracles will continue to happen in the darkness of the movie theater. Welcome to LEFFEST’20!

Paul Thomas Anderson

Homenagem

Tribute

Winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin and the Award for Best Director in Cannes, Anderson explores the nature of human flaws which materialize in complex and alienated characters. As Artes e o Público

no Mundo Pós-Pandemia

Simpósio

Symposium

The beginning of 2020 “broke the nexus of the world” when the event for which several scientists and thinkers had been warning us about, but which we did not expect, finally took place. Taking us by surprise, a worldwide pandemic has suddenly paralyzed the planet and imprisoned us in bubbles from which we are slowly trying to break through. In the arts and culture sectors, the effects have been catastrophic. Between change and continuity, what kind of world can we expect now?

Os Olhares em Confronto

Ciclo Temático

Thematic Programme

Confronting the Gaze is born out of the desire to pay tribute to

films that have interrogated the complex and controversial nature of cinematic images while trying to relieve cinema from its hegemonic gaze and embark on the search for new authentic perspectives. But how to display this complex tangle of visions? With this series of double features, the goal is not to simply posit oppositions, but to stimulate a more diverse and ambiguous conversation. CinemART

CinemART was created with the purpose of enriching our program with a section dedicated to great artists who have been seduced by cinema’s restless fascination and have thus challenged creativity through the specific language of this artistic expression. Motivated by the desire to explore cinema through the fusion with other arts, LEFFEST’20 will once again present CinemART, a place of discovery and surprise.

de Sintra – Património Mundial

da UNESCO

Simpósio

Symposium

On December 6 1995, the cultural landscape of Sintra was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An important step towards the recognition of humanity’s collective interests, the classification allowed for a renewed concern for the conservation of the cultural and natural elements of Sintra’s landscape. This statute becomes particularly relevant at a time when human action is increasingly disastrous. But how to reconcile heritage with the everyday experience of the city?

Clément Cogitore

Homenagem

Tribute

Young master of the visual arts, Cogitore dominates the fusion of film, photography and experimental video.

Sharad wants to follow his father’s footsteps and dedicate himself to the century-old traditions of Indian classical music. Under the teachings of a strict master, he studies the art of intonation and the different melodic variations of the craft. However, living in the midst of a rapidly-changing Mumbai that puts classical techniques in peril as new ways replace the old, Sharad finds himself facing a dream unfit for the reality unfolding in front of him. Director Chaitanya Tamhane’s second feature, The Disciple is a melodious and poetic reflection about the confrontation between tradition and modernity, between the need to adapt and the will to preserve. Born in 1987 in Mumbai, Chaitanya Tamhane is one of the most promising young Indian directors. After studying English Literature, in 2011 he directed his first short-film Six Strands, and in 2014 he directed his first feature Court, a protest film that premiered in Venice, where it won the award for Best Film in the Horizons section.

Sharunas Bartas

Elenco / Cast: Arvydas Dapsys, Marius Povilas, Elijas Martynenko, Alina Zaliukaite-Ramanauskiene

LT, FR, CZ, PT, LV, 2020, 128’

Following the end of the Second World War, in an isolated village in the depths of Lithuania, Ounté, a 19 year-old boy, joins the partisan movement that has gathered throughout the lands to fight against the soviet occupation. In Bartas’ most recent feature film, developing into adulthood is set in a field where the passionate innocence of youth is dangerously submerged by a wave of violence and deception. Of the 30.000 fighters that have fought in the Lithuanian forests, this is the story of one. Born in Lithuania, Sharunas Bartas graduated from VGIK Film School in Moscow and in 1989 founded the first independent studio in Lithuania. In his films, he has built an uncommonly delicate aesthetic, celebrated by the Centre Pompidou in 2016 through a retrospective dedicated to his work.

Christian Petzold

Elenco / Cast: Paula Beer, Franz Rogowski, Maryam Zaree, Jacob Matschenz DE, FR, 2020, 90’

Em 2000, realizou a sua primeira longa-metragem, The State I Am in, que venceu o German Film Award para Melhor Filme.

“If you leave me, I’ll have to kill you”, the movie’s protagonist tells her lover as they part ways at the corner café. Diving into the subtle realm of the supernatural, director Christian Petzold re-imagines the mythological figure of the water nymph Undine, who becomes human when she falls in love and dies if her lover is unfaithful, translating it into a 21st century love story. Here, Undine is a historian who works as a museum guide in Berlin. Defying the myth’s rules, the film bears fruit to a heartfelt play between reality and illusion.

Christian Petzold is a Berlin School filmmaker, known as the modern master of suspense and one of Hitchcock’s heirs. In 2000, he directed his first feature film, The State I am in, winning the German Film Award for Best Film. In 2012, he won the Award for Best Director at Berlinale with his film Barbara.

Orphea

Alexander Kluge, Khavn

Elenco / Cast: Lilith Stangenberg, Ian Madrigal DE, 2020, 99’

The legendary Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is twisted into a reinvented contemporary version by German cinema innovator Alexander Kluge in his collaboration with Filipino artist and filmmaker Khavn. Through an experimental approach, the story switches the heroes’ gender so that, this time, it is Orphea, a woman, that descends into the underworld to save her lover Euridiko. Measured to the rhythm of rock music and set in the slums of Manila, its mythological weight is paired with an aesthetically avant-garde take on issues of immigration and xenophobia.

Alexander Kluge is one of the most important filmmakers and intellectuals of post-war Germany. His film The Artist in the Circus Dome: Clueless (1968) was awarded the Golden Lion in Venice. Khavn is one of Philippines’ most renowned contemporary artists. He has directed 51 feature-length and 115 short films, authored six books and composed 23 albums.

Agnieszka Holland

Elenco / Cast: Ivan Trojan, Josef Trojan, Juraj Loj, Jaroslava Pokorná

CZ, IE, PL, SK, 2020, 118’

The Upcoming

Inspired by the life of Jan Mikolášek (1889-1973), a Czech healer who treated hundreds of individuals with plant-based medicine, Charlatan is set against the background of the two World Wars and the three regime changes which marked the socio-political context of Czechoslovakia throughout the 20th century. Despite his healing accomplishments, Mikolášek’s unconventional methods are not always well-received by the society he lives in: the communist regime designates him as a charlatan. Danielle Arbid

Elenco / Cast: Laetitia Dosch, Sergei Polunin, Caroline Ducey, Lou-Teymour Thion, Grégoire Colin, Slimane Dazi FR, BE, 2020, 99’

» Screen Daily Hélène is a Parisian academic specialized in the work of 17th century English playwright Aphra Behn. Facing and addressing the camera, she describes her encounter with a man with whom she fell in love during a party in Oporto. An adaptation of Annie Ernaux’s novel of the same name, filmmaker Danielle Arbid paints a tribute to the amour fou, perennial and treasured subject of French cinema, in this erotic and daring drama.

a negligência, o controlo e a independência. »

Con artists Theresa and Robert have spent the past 26 years teaching their only daughter Old Dolio the art of tricking, scheming and stealing. In the course of a desperate heist, the couple persuades

a stranger to join them in their next attack. However, Melanie’s arrival in the group turns its dynamic upside down, changing the stoic routine of Old Dolio in an unpredictable way. This new film by cult filmmaker Miranda July is an absurdist comedy punctuated by moments of delicate tenderness that explores the intricate layers and meanings of intimacy, negligence, control and independence.

« July takes these weird, desperate characters and gives their lives a couple of cosmic twists that serve both to clarify her vision and to expand it. This might be her best film yet. » Vulture

A woman, a suitcase and a dog. As she waits for her ex-lover to come pick these up, an emotional turmoil rises inside her mind, bursting and pouring out into all sorts of heartbroken states and moods. From rage to despair, she faces the pain and grief of abandonment, having as her only companion a dog that has also lost its master. Based upon the monodrama of the same name written by Jean Cocteau in 1928, this highly anticipated short film joins the unique oeuvre of auteur director Pedro Almodóvar in its tragically eccentric nature and contrasted tones that never leave a big red splatter out of the carefully framed picture.

« It’s a delight no matter how you slice it; for fans, it’s a reminder of what makes Almodóvar such a great director, and for neophytes, it’s an unforgettable introduction. »
