RESOLUTION

CD28.R31

REPORT ON THE II INTER-AMERICAN MEETING, AT THE

MINISTERIAL LEVEL, ON ANIMAL HEALTH

THE 28th DIRECTING COUNCIL,

Having considered the report on the II Inter-American Meeting, at the Ministerial Level, on Animal

Health1 (Document CD28/21):

Bearing in mind that the Inter-American Meetings, at the Ministerial Level, on Animal Health are

convened, in accordance with Resolution XIX of the XVII Meeting of the Directing Council and

Resolution XII2 of the XII Inter-American Meeting, at the Ministerial Level, on Foot-and-Mouth

Disease and Zoonoses Control, for the purpose of reviewing the proposed program and budgets of

the Pan American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center and the Pan American Zoonoses Center and for

discussing the overall Program of Animal Health of PAHO;

Being aware that the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has

established a program on animal health and production;

Recognizing the adverse effects of animal diseases on the health and socioeconomic development

of the countries of the Hemisphere; and

Taking into account the common interest of the Ministers of Health and of Agriculture in

continuing their successful cooperation in programs of prevention and control of zoonoses and

RESOLVES

1. To take note of the report on the II Inter-American Meeting, at the Ministerial Level, on Animal

Health (Document CD28/21).

2. To authorize the Director to convene the III Inter-American Meeting, at the Ministerial Level, on

Animal Health in 1983 and on alternate years thereafter.

3. To recommend to the Ministers of Agriculture that, in order to avoid duplication, special

emphasis be placed on the joint analysis of the animal health program and budgets of PAHO and

IICA.

4. To urge the Governments and the international, bilateral, and private agencies of the Region to

increase their efforts to control the principal zoonoses by providing the political, technical, and

financial support necessary to attain the goals set by each country.

5. To congratulate the Ministers of Agriculture on their efforts to improve the health of the peoples

of the Americas through the prevention and control of animal diseases that affect the well-being and

economy of the countries of the Hemisphere.
