Tribology is the science and technology of
interacting surfaces in relative motion.
It includes the study and application of the
principles of friction, lubrication and wear.
The word "tribology" derives from the Greek τρίβω
("tribo") meaning "(Ι) rub" (root τριβ-), and λόγος
("logos") meaning 'principle or logic'.

characteristic or phenomenon.

Different materials wear differently in the same
situation.
It is necessary to examine and characterize a
number of different parameters, not simply the worn
part.

The study of the processes of wear is part of the
discipline of tribology. There are five principal wear
processes:
• Adhesive
• Abrasive wear: two-body wear or three-body-wear
• Surface fatigue
• Fretting wear
• Erosion wear

The term abrasive wear is used to describe
situations where the principal cause of the wear is
scratching or cutting by abrasive particles.

The term erosion is used where the wear is
caused by a fluid, a stream of particles, or bubbles
(in the case of cavitation), not by contact between
two solid bodies.

More than one type of mechanism can be involved
in a wear situation. Individual mechanisms can
interact sequentially to form a more complex wear
process.
However,
one
mechanism
generally
is
the
controlling and primary mechanism.
Materials can exhibit transitions in wear behavior as
a result of changes in other operational parameters,
such as load, velocity, and friction.

Conclusions
Conclusions
• Wear failures occur because of the sensitivity of
a material or system to the surface changes
caused by wear.
• Typically, it is the geometrical or profile aspects
of these changes, such as
a dimensional
change, a change in shape, or residual thickness
of a coating, that defines failure.
• However, a change in appearance and the
nature of the wear damage also can be causes

• Hertzian contact stress refers to the
localized stresses that develop as two
curved surfaces come in contact and
deform under the imposed loads.
• These contact stresses are cyclic in nature
and over time lead to sub-surface fatigue
cracks.

• Fluência (T > 0.3* Tf):
• Por discordância
• Por difusão
Difusão libera discordâncias de obstáculos, cuja
movimentação leva à fluência.

Como evitar fluência?
Material de alto ponto de fusão;
Maximizar número de barreiras à movimentação de discordâncias
(precipitados estáveis e soluções sólidas;
Tamanho de grão grande : minimizar difusão em CG
Imobilizar contornos de grão com precipitados
