Welcome To Holy Rosary Parish Dear Friends,

This week, ready or not, we begin the Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday services. Please recall that Ash Wednesday is a day of Universal Fasting &

Abstinence. We will have Mass at 7am, 9am, Noon, and 6pm (Spanish).

COVID protocols prevent making the sign of the cross on your forehead with Blessed Ashes. However, there is a provision that will permit sprinkling Blessed Ashes on the top of the head of those who wish to receive the

blessing….. May the Lord bless us as we begin this solemn penitential season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Christ’s peace, Fr. Bernie

Queridos Amigos,

Bernie

Lenten Opportunities:

Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule

Our Mass times on Ash Wednesday are 7:00 AM, 9:00 AM (Livestream), 12 Noon and bilingual at 6 PM. The bless- ing and distribution of ashes will take

place after the homily at Mass. DURING THIS TIME OF THE PANDEMIC, ASHES WILL BE SPRINKLED ON TOP OF THE PERSON’S HEAD RATHER THAN MAK- ING THE SIGN OF THE CROSS ON THE FORHEAD.

Stations of the Cross

The way of the cross will be prayed in church on Tuesdays of Lent after the 6 PM Mass. As for all services, masks are re-

quired as well as social distancing. You might want to consider this prayer form as a way of being in prayerful solidarity with all the suffering people in our world, particularly those with COVID.

RCIA UPDATE

Next weekend we will present 6 people to Bishop Siegel for the Rite of Election. Parishioners have not seen our candidates and catechumen much this year because they have been participating in the live stream Mass and meeting for class virtually since De- cember. We invite you to continue to prayer for them as they prepare for full membership in the Catholic Church come Easter.

Our candidates and catechumen are:

Brandon Davis Brent Miley Doug & Carrie Patterson

Brandon Whitfield Rae Zirkelbach

U N I T E D C A R I N G S H E L T E R Holy Rosary Parish has partnered with United Caring Shelter to cook and serve on the 2nd Saturday of every month for lunch. It only requires 3 hours of your time.

I am looking to fill the spots for 2021 so please contact me via email: [email protected] or cell: 812-484-4381 (preferred method) and I will fill you in on how you are able to serve the less fortunate in our community. We have filled January 2021 spots. Please note that if you would like to serve but are not sure you want to prepare the meal at the shelter, UCS is very receptive to meals being brought in and served by their staff. A sack lunch is always an option too if that would be something of interest. This shelter feeds those in need 3 times a day/ 365 days a year so the opportunities to bless UCS is endless. I hope you will consider taking a moment to think about this opportunity and commit.

Join us this Lent for a prayerful and peaceful vigil!

Invite a friend or two to walk and pray in front of Planned Parenthood for the 40 Days for Life. This cam- paign starts Wednesday, February 17th-Sunday, March 28. Holy Rosary has been invited to walk on Thursday’s but you are welcome to walk anytime during the spring campaign. For more information, please con- tact Kim Engbers at [email protected] or Kathy Smith at [email protected]

Diaper Drive

Right to Life of Southwest Indiana has started a drive to resupply the diaper supply in the area’s Pro-life agen- cies. For the month of February, you can support the drive by dropping off diapers at Birthright or the Right to Life Office. To donate online please visit

Lent with Friends

We started our practices of Social Distancing and staying away from our family and friends during Lent last year and it has been challenging. The par- ish is still not hosting a lot of group or gathered ac- tivities for us to build community and pray together.

So this year we are encouraging you to

DO “LENT WITH FRIENDS”

(of course in a COVID responsible way). Here is what we mean by Lent with Friends:

FIND 3-5 friends who are willing to do Lent with you. Maybe they are all people in your bubble.

Friends Groups can be made up of:

2 or 3 Couples

All men, all women, combined groups

A group of Young Adults or Middle School or High School youth

Catholic & non- Catholics alike Maybe invite neighbors

Register your group with the parish so we can pray for all of our groups

During the 6 weeks of Lent COMMIT to participating in a Bible or Book Study, Pray together each week, engage in acts of service and outreach Set a day/time for your Friend Group to meet either

VIRTUALLY or IN PERSON in a COVID safe man- ner.

Order your materials (if required)

Begin to meet around the week of Feb 14th (Lent be- gins Feb. 17th).

Holy Rosary is putting together a list of suggested studies and prayer ideas that you can use. Here are a few ideas – More will be available online

A Stewardship Prayer for February

Merciful God, We embark on our journey of re- newal through difficult and uncertain times; times of

division and strife, and for many suffering and dis- couragement. But our journey is with your son, Je-

sus, who bore his cross and suffered in ways we cannot imagine. We journey with Jesus toward the

great paschal feast of Easter, where we have the grace to experience true the joy of Resurrection.

Teach us to be good stewards of your mercy and forgiveness, so that we may extend these gifts to others. Give us the strength to bear witness to your

son at all times, even during these times of stress and adversity. And fill our hearts with love that we

may be faithful to the Gospel Jesus proclaimed and ready to celebrate our unity with him and each other. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ,

your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen Keep a Prayer Journal During Lent

This February two events will take place in the same week. Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday are just three days apart. Valentine’s Day

encourages us to offer written expressions of our love and affection to others through cards and let- ters. Why not express our love for the Lord by keeping a prayer journal during Lent? The season of Lent can be a great time of spiritual growth and keeping a prayer journal can help strengthen our prayer life. Journaling can help us listen more in- tently to God’s voice, track our spiritual growth, and deepen our relationship with the Lord.

There are different ways to keep a prayer journal.

You can simply reflect on a passage from scripture, then write down your thoughts and feelings. Or, you can write down what the Holy Spirit places upon your heart during prayer. It’s important to commit to a specific time and place each day to pray and spend time in silence with God. Then, as part of your prayer experience, write a few lines.

Whether you want to express your gratitude, chal- lenges, praises or laments, share them with the Lord in writing. As Valentine’s Day gives us an oppor- tunity to reflect on and express ourselves to those we love, prayer journals accomplish the same thing in our relationship with the Lord. If you’re not al- ready in the habit of keeping a prayer journal, try it. You’ll be surprised by the spiritual awareness cultivated within yourself as you journey with Christ toward Easter.

Stewardship food for thought:

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of Febru- ary 13/14, 2021 The fate of a leper is a great tragedy at any time and place. In Jesus’ time, lep- ers were considered condemned, part of the plagues God sent as punishment. They were cast out of society and abandoned. Saint Mark’s Gospel reveals the unthinkable. Jesus reaches out and touches a leper. He risks catching the contagious disease and heals the man. As the Gospel story teaches, no one is abandoned by Christ. Are there those in our society or in our personal lives for whom we ascribe no hope, who we have aban- doned, treated like lepers? Or as Christ’s stewards of our sisters and brothers, do we risk reaching out and touching those who may seem to us to be

“unclean” or not worthy of our time or attention?
