de r a i z e s , a absorção e a e l i m i n a ç ã o de n u t r i e n t e s , a t e m p e

-r a t u -r a a i n d a i n f l u e n c i a à capacidade do solo -rete-r á g u a e a

atividade e a b u n d â n c i a de m i c r o o r g a n i s m o s fotosintéticos e n ã o

fotosintéticos n o litter.

A i n d a n ã o h a v i a observações de longa d u r a ç ã o sobre a t e m

-p e r a t u r a d o solo n a A m a z ô n i a . Cientistas do I N P A e do N C A R ,

n u m esforço c o n j u n t o , resolveram p r e e n c h e r a l a c u n a .

A p e r m u t a de calor entre as diversas c a m a d a s do solo,

i . e . os m e c a n i s m o s físicos dos vários processos energéticos

d o solo, n ã o são discutidos n o presente t r a b a l h o , já que u m a

a v a l i a ç ã o d e t a l h a d o da t e m p e r a t u r a e m vários tipos de solo

da A m a z ô n i a C e n t r a l constitue assunto de o u t r o t r a b a l h o e m

c o n c l u s ã o (2).

A s t e m p e r a t u r a s d o solo f o r a m registradas s i m u l t a n e a m e n t e

a três p r o f u n d i d a d e s d i f e r e n t e s , utilizando-se u m t e r m ó g r a f o

registrador à distância m u n i d o de três sensores e localizado a

120 c m do soio, n u m a b r i g o especialmente desenhado.

Os sensores utilizados são a m e r c ú r i o , encastoados e m sondas

de b r o n z e e c o m u m a c o m u n i c a ç ã o capilar c o m o t e r m ó g r a f o .

A s sondas são " t e m p e r a t u r e c o m p e n s a t e d " . T o d o o sistema

capilar é p r o t e g i d o c o m t u b u l a ç ã o plástica p a r a r e d u z i r ao

Soil t e m p e r a t u r e s a r e a n i m p o r t a n t factor in plant life.

T h e y a r e a critical f a c t o r for g e r m i n a t i o n , root d e v e l o p m e n t or

n u t r i e n t u p t a k e a n d release of v a r i o u s c u l t i v a t e d crops a n d

plants. T h e y a r e closely related to soil w a t e r c a p a c i t y a n d

p a r t l y control the a c t i v i t y a n d a b u n d a n c e of photosynthetic a n d

n o n - p h o t o s y n t h e t i c m i c r o o r g a n i s m s in the soil a n d litter layers.

U p t o 1969, l o n g - t e r m soil t e m p e r a t u r e m e a s u r e m e n t s w e r e

not a v a i l a b l e for the T e r t i a r y region of central A m a z o n i a neither

for n a t u r a l forest sites nor clearcut areas.

I N P A / N C A R scientists in a joint e f f o r t w i t h the

present set of soil t e m p e r a t u r e d a t e . H e a t e x c h a n g e between

d i f f e r e n t soil layers, i . e . the physical m e c h a n i s m s of v a r i o u s

energetic processes in the soil w e r e not discussed in this paper,

because a detailed e v a l u a t i o n of soil t e m p e r a t u r e s of various

central A m a z o n i a n soil types is u n d e r w a y (2),

Soil t e m p e r a t u r e s w e r e recorded s i m u l t a n e o u s l y for three

d i f f e r e n t depths by a remote recording three point r e r m o g r a p h set

up in a specially designed instrument shelter at about 120 c m

a b o v e the forest floor.

T h e t e m p e r a t u r e sensors a r e m e r c u r y filled

 bulbs

encased

in brass probes w i t h c a p i l l a r y c o n n e c t i o n to the instrument. T h e

probes are t e m p e r a t u r e c o m p e n s a t e d . A d d i t i o n a l l y , the capillary

systems w e r e protected w i t h plastic hoses to reduce corrosion to

t h e v e r y m i n i m u m . O n l y probe t e m p e r a t u r e s a r e recorded. T h e

t h e r m o g r a p h was l a b o r a t o r y c a l i b r a t e d before exposure. Every

m í n i m o a corrosão. Somente sac registradas as t e m p e r a t u r a s

das sondas.

A c a l i b r a ç ã o do t e r m ó g r a f o , e x e c u t a d a e m laboratório antes

do início dos trabalhos, foi revisada c a d a três meses utilizando-se

para c o m p a r a ç ã o u m jogo de t e r m ô m e t r o s de solo convencionais.

A precisão obtida foi do o r d e m de mais o u menos 3,3°C d u r a n t e

todo o período de e x p e r i ê n c i a .

A t e m p e r a t u r a do solo foi registrado a três p r o f u n d i d a d e s

(20 - 40 c m ; 40 - 60 c m ; e 6 0 - 80 c m ) estando as Sondas

colo-cadas v e r t i c a l m e n t e . O t e r m ó g r a f o e s t a v a equipado c o m t a m b o r

f a z e n d o revolução completa e m 7 dias.

solo retirada pela b r o c a , u m e d e c i d o e b e m apertado. A s medidas

f o r a m iniciadas duas semanas após a instalação das sondas.

O local das observações é u m a c h a p a d a de terra f i r m e

recoberta de floresta ú m i d a , n o interior da Reserva D u c k e , k m

26 da rodovia M a n a u s - l t a c o a t i a r a . O solo é classificado c o m o

latosol a m a r e l o m u i t o pesado (3). Semelhante tipo de solo é

representativo de pelo menos 8 5 % das terras altas terciárias

entre M a n a u s e o Rio Preto da E v a .

E x a m e físico do solo, média de três amostras e m c a d a

p r o f u n d i d a d e , forneceu o seguinte resultado :

A s variações da umidade no latosol coberto c o m floresta ú m i d a

O solo é recoberto c o m litter. A s perdas por decomposição do

liíter são restauradas c a d a ano, especialmente d u r a n t e a estação

seca ( J u n h o - O u t u b r o ) .

t h r e e months, t h e calibration was adjusted by means of a set of

soil thermometers. T h e a c c u r a c y obtained w a s in the order of

about 0.3°C over the period of m e a s u r e m e n t s .

Soil t e m p e r a t u r e s w e r e recorded for three depths (20 - 4 0 c m ;

40 - 60cm a n d 60 - 8 0 c m ) w i t h t e m p e r a t u r e probes exposed

vertically operating w i t h o 7-day d r u m rotation. Direct soil

contact of t h e probes w a s g u a r a n t e e d by tightly fitting

bore-holes, w h i c h w e r e closed after e x p o s u r e w i t h washed-in soil f r o m

the a u g e r blade. A f t e r o two w e e k s settling, the t h e r m o g r a p h

was put into operation.

Soil t e m p e r a t u r e s w e r e recorded at D u c k e F o r e s t ' Reserve,

K m 26 of the M a n a u s - l t a c o a t i a r a Road. T h e site under s t u d y ,

a so-called c h a p a d a , w a s Covered w i t h a terra f i r m e rain

forest. T h e soil was classified as a v e r y h e a v y y e l l o w latosol (3).

T h i s soil t y p e is representative f o r at least 85 percent of the

T e r t i a r y uplands between the city of M a n a u s a n d the Rio Preto

da Eva,

Soil moisture fluctuations in t h e latosols c o v e r e d w i t h

n a t u r a l terra f i r m e rain forest were insignificant w i t h t i m e a n d

depth. T h e year r o u n d , soil moisture was at about field capacity.

T h e forest floor was c o v e r e d w i t h a perenial litter layer.

Decomposition losses w e r e restored e v e r y y e a r p r i m a r i l y during

rhe d r y season ( J u n e to O c t o b e r ) .
