Th e d a t a c o l l e c t e d a r e s a m p l e s o f f i c t i o n a l i n t e r a c t i o n s e x t r a c t e d f r o m f i l m s p r o d u c e d in E n g l i s h . Th e a n a l y s i s of t h e d a t a f o c u s e s on th e u s e o f c o n v e r s a t i o n a l r u l e s by w o m e n a n d m e n (as f i 1m - c h a r a c t e r s ) and on t h e e x t e n t t h i s u s e d i f f e r s f r o m what o c c u r s in real c o n v e r s a t i o n s . W h e n s p e a k e r s e n g a g e in a c o n v e r s a t i o n t h e y m a s be e n g a g i n g in a p l e a s a n t c o m m u n i c a t i o n g a m e o r in a h o t c h p o t c h of m i s u n d e r s t a n d i n g s . By t h i s I m e a n that c o n v e r s a t i o n can be d e s c r i b e d as an a c t i v i t y in w h i c h s p e a k e r s m a y e i t h e r e x p e r i e n c e a s e n s e o f a c c o m p l i s h m e n t or a f e e l i n g of d e e p f r u s t r a t i o n . E v e r y o n e h a s h e a r d a b o u t or h a s ha d t h e e x p e r i e n c e of an a r g u m e n t o r of c h e e r f u l 'small t a l k ' w i t h s o m e o n e e l se. In t h i s s t u d y I look i n t o t h e p r o b l e m a t i c c o n v e r s a t i o n a l c i r c u n s t a n c e s b e t w e e n w o m e n a n d m e n w h i c h I t e r m h e r e as ' c r o s s - s e x m i s c o m m u n i c a t i o n '. To b e s p e c i f i c , I wa nt t o c o n s i d e r c r o s s - s e x m i s c o m m u n i c a t i o n u n d e r t w o p e r s p e c t i v e s : that of th e u s e of c o n v e r s a t i o n a l r u l e s p r o p o s e d by s t u d i e s on c o n v e r s a t i o n a l a n a l y s i s a n d that of t h e d i f f e r e n c e s in t h e s p e e c h of w o m e n a n d m e n p r o p o s e d by s t u d i e s on l a n g u a g e a n d sex. T h e s e t w op e r s p e c t i v e s w i l l b e a n a l y s e d in i n s t a n c e s of m i s c o m m u n i c a t i o n . In o t h e r w o r d s , I wan t t o o b s e r v e h o w i n t e r a c t a n t s e s t a b l i s h d i f f e r e n t c o n v e r s a t i o n a l r o l e s t h r o u g h t h e u s e of c o n v e r s a t i o n a l r u l e s a n d d i f f e r e n t c o n v e r s a t i o n a l s t y l e s . In t h e o r e t i c a l t e r m s , c o n v e r s a t i o n h a s b e e n d e s c r i b e d as a r u l e - g o v e r n e d s y s t e m , e v e n t h o u g h , a p p a r e n t l y , it m a y s e e m t o be d i s o r g a n i z e d . C o n v e r s a t i o n a l a n a l y s t s h a v e o b s e r v e d , for e x a m p l e , that t h e r e is a set of r u l e s fo r t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n of t u r n s in c o n v e r s a t i o n ( S a c k s et a l . 1 97 8) , t h a t t h e r e is a r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n u t t e r a n c e s in c o n v e r s a t i o n a l e x c h a n g e s ( T s u i : 1 9 9 1 ) , that t h e r e a r e c e r t a i n p r i n c i p l e s that t h e s p e a k e r s f o l l o w w h e n t h e y i n t e r a c t w i t h o n e a n o t h e r ( G r i c e : 19 7 5 ) , a n d that s p e a k e r s m a y be i n d i r e c t in m o s t of t h e t h i n g s t h e y sa y (T a n n e n : 1986). C o n v e r s a t i o n a l a n a l y s t s h a v e a l s o d e v e l o p e d s t u d i e s on c o n f l i c t t a l k ( G r i m s h a w , 19 90 ). In t h i s r e s p e c t o n e i m p o r t a n t c h a r a c t e r i s t i c of c o n f l i c t in c o n v e r s a t i o n is that it e x p r e s s e s o p p o s i t i o n . In o t h e r w o r d s , t h e p a r t i c i p a n t s a d o p t o p p o s i n g c o n v e r s a t i o n a l p o s i t i o n s ( d o m i n a n c e and s u b m i s s i o n ) w h i c h are p r e s e n t o n t h e l i n g u i s t i c a n d p a r a l i n g u i s t i c d e v i c e s an d b o d y l a n g u a g e u s e d d u r i n g t h e c o n f l i c t i n g i n t e r a c t i o n . In s u c h c i r c u m s t a n c e , t h e p a r t i c i p a n t s o p p o s e t h e i r u t t e r a n c e s , a c t i o n s , or s e l v e s o f o n e a n o t h e r a l o n g t h e c o n v e r s a t i o n a l e x c h a n g e s ( V u c h i n i c , 19 90). M o r e o v e r , it h a s b e e n o b s e r v e d that c o n v e r s a t i o n is, in g e n e r a l t e r m s , h i g h l y l i n k e d t o s o c i o - c u l t u r a l p h e n o m e n a w h i c h c h a r a c t e r i z e d i f f e r e n c e s in t h e w a y p e o p l e s p e a k ( G u m p e r z : 1988). In t h i s r e s p e c t , t h e r e h a s b e e n s o m e e v i d e n c e f r o m s t u d i e s on
l a n g u a g e a n d s e x th at w o m e n a n d m e n g r o w up in d i f f e r e n t c u l t u r a l g r o u p s ( M a l t z & B o r k e r : 1988, C o a s t e s : 19 8 6 ) , p e r f o r m d i f f e r e n t s o c i a l r o l e s ( L a k o f f : 1 9 7 5 ) , and, as a c o n s e q u e n c e , d e v e l o p d i f f e r e n t c o n v e r s a t i o n a l s t y l e s ( T a n n e n : 1986). T h e s e f i n d i n g s h a v e b e e n l a r g e l y e x p l o r e d by p s y c h o l o g i s t s , a n t h r o p o l o g i s t s , s o c i o l o g i s t s , a n d l i n g u i s t s . T h i s i n t e r e s t is j u s t i f i a b l e b e c a u s e t h e s e f i n d i n g s b r i n g to l i gh t b a s i c d i f f e r e n c e s b e t w e e n t h e s e x e s a s s o c i a l a n d c u l t u r a l s u b g r o u p s . M a n y s t u d i e s h a v e s h o w n th at w o m a n a nd m e n h a v e d i f f e r e n t c u l t u r a l r u l e s f o r c o n v e r s a t i o n a n d that m i s c o m m u n i c a t i o n u s u a l l y h a p p e n s in c r o s s - s e x c o m m u n i c a t i o n . In t h i s r e g a r d , M a l t z & B o r k e r ( 1 9 8 8 ) s a i d that w o m e n a n d me n h a v e p r o b l e m s w h e n i n t e r a c t i n g w i t h o n e a n o t h e r b e c a u s e t h e y h a v e d i f f e r e n t c o n c e p t s a n d r u l e s f o r c o m m u n i c a t i n g w h a t t h e y mea n. In e x a m i n i n g t h e d a t a o f p r e v i o u s s t u d i e s on t h e s u b j e c t , M a l t z & B o r k e r f o u n d out t h a t t h e s p e e c h of w o m e n a n d m e n h a v e p e c u l i a r f e a t u r e s . T h e s e f e a t u r e s , on t h e o n e h a n d , c h a r a c t e r i z e t h e d i f f e r e n c e s o f t h e i r s p e e c h e s and, on th e o t h e r h a n d, c a n be t h e s o u r c e of m i s c o m m u n i c a t i o n b e t w e e n th e s e x e s . T h u s a c c o r d i n g t o t h em , w o m e n t e n d to i n q u i r e m o r e o f t e n , t h a t is, t h e y ask q u e s t i o n s m o r e f r e q u e n t l y w i t h t h e p u r p o s e of k e e p i n g t h e f l o w of t h e c o n v e r s a t i o n . T h e y a l s o u s e m o r e p o s i t i v e m i n i m a l r e s p o n s e s ( h u h - h u h , y e a h , e t c ) a n d i n s e r t c o m m e n t s d u r i n g t h e c o n v e r s a t i o n . T h e y r e a c t w h e n b e i n g i n t e r r u p t e d . W h e n m i n i m a l r e s p o n s e s a r e not p r o v i d e d , t h e y get s i l e n t a n d t h e y u s u a l l y a c k n o w l e d g e t h e p r e s e n c e o f t h e o t h e r p a r t i c i p a n t s by u s i n g t h e p r o n o u n s 'you' a n d 'we'. Men, fo r t h e i r p a r t , i n t e r r u p t m o r e o f t e n w h e n o t h e r s p e a k e r s h a v e t h e f l o o r a n d a r e m o r e l i k e l y t o c h a l l a n g e what is b e i n g s a id . T h e y do not a c k n o w l e d g e o t h e r p e o p l e s s t a t e m e n t s an d s c a r c e l y o f f e r s o m e k i n d o f f e e d b a c k . Al so , t h e y t e n d to c o n t r o l t h e t o p i c of a c o n v e r s a t i o n a n d g e n e r a l l y m a k e d i r e c t s t a t e m e n t s .
C o n s i d e r i n g t h e s e d i f f e r e n c e s b e t w e e n w o m e n an d men, M a l t z & B o r k e r v e r i f i e d that r e s e a r c h e r s o f f e r e d t w o t y p e s of e x p l a n a t i o n s f o r t h e m : t h e r e f l e x i o n of t h e s o c i a l s y s t e m in the s p e a k e r s ' c o n v e r s a t i o n a l b e h a v i o u r an d d i f f e r e n t p s y c h o l o g i c a l a t t i t u d e s c h a r a c t e r i z e d by t h e s e x - r o l e r e q u i r e m e n t e s t a b l i s h e d by t h e s o c i e t y . In t h i s way, t h e r o l e s p l a y e d by w o m e n a n d m e n a r e d i s t i n g u i s h e d by d i f f e r e n c e s in s o c i a l p o w e r . Th at is, t h e f e a t u r e s of m e n ' s s p e e c h is c h a r a c t e r i z e d by t h e d o m i n a n t r o l e t h a t t h e y p l a y in s o c i e t y an d w o m e n ' s s p e e c h by t h e n o n - d o m i n a n t r o l e t h a t t h e y p l a y . In g e n e r a l t e r m s , M a l t z & B o r k e r ' s r e s e a r c h s h o w e d t h e i m p o r t a n c e of t h e c o n s i d e r a t i o n o f a c u l t u r a l p e r s p e c t i v e in th e s t u d y of c r o s s - s e n c o m m u n i c a t i o n .
