Rio 2016 Olympic Torchthrills residents of

Corumbá de Goiás and Pirenópolis

Flame visited a waterfall, took a balloon ride androde a horse;

Zezé di Camargo and Luciano were moved in their hometown

Thepeople of Goiás embraced the Olympic flame on the second day of the Rio 2016Torch Relay. In the towns of Corumbá de Goiás and Pirenópolis, the streets werefilled with families, children performing dances in squares, Olympic sport demonstrationsand decoration representing the best of the state: garlands of yellow caraíba flowersfrom the region, baskets of fruits and vegetables, coloured ribbons and manymasks. Displays of local folklore were held in both towns.

InPirenópolis, after being taken up in a balloon, the Olympic torch reached thehands of two idols of sertaneja (Brazilian country) music, Zezé Di Camargo andLuciano. They together carried the flame to the town’s main church, to thedelight of around 15,000 people who had gathered in the square to see the stars with the torch close-up.

“TheOlympic Games promote peace and unity between people. I never thought that Iwould be crossing this street, next to my brother, carrying in my handsthe world’s biggest sports symbol, on the same cobblestones where I walked whenI was a child. Today the torch belongs to Pirenópolis!” said Zezé Di Camargo.

“Youfeel the moments. First, it’s a very big expectation, then when you’re on thebus with the other torchbearers you hear the stories. That’s the great thing,hearing people’s stories,” said Luciano. Someof today’s highlights:

· The first torchbearer of the day was José Quirino, one of the best-knownparticipants in the region’s “cavalhada” festivals. These events are a dramaticrepresentation of the battles betweenChristians and Moors in the 8th century, and José alwaysplays the king of the Moors. “The cavalhada wasbrought here by the Portuguese and Spanish members of the church, and it hastaken place in Corumbá for 180 years,” he said proudly. He had another reasonto celebrate today – he carried the Olympic torch in front of Salto de Corumbá,a 70-metre waterfall that is a regional tourist attraction.

· An unofficial “torchbearer” proved a hit in Corumbá: “Tochão,” a44-year-old dentist called Lucio Monteiro, dressed up in a giant Olympictorch-themed costume. Lucio is a runner and he often takes part in the SãoSilvestre Race in São Paulo dressed as a famous character. “In the last race Iwent as the Olympic torch to celebrate the Rio 2016 Games. I was alreadythinking about the relay,” he explained.

· The strong sun of Perinópolis did not discourage Delzica da Luz Cintra,74, and her daughter Marília Salomé, 43, from watching the torch relay in thetown’s main square. “This is the first and maybe the only

time the flame willpass by here. I couldn’t miss it. It’s a source of great joy for our town,” shesaid. Her daughter Marília is a fan of Olympic sports, especially volleyballand swimming. “I’m a fan of Gustavo Borges and Hortência. It’s a pity the Gameswon’t be here. But the torch is a way for us to participate,” she said.
