Vamos entender melhor?

countable nouns (substantivos contáveis) são aqueles que têm singular e

plural. Por exemplo, “cat” (gato), “cats” (gatos), “table” (mesa), “tables” (mesas), “book” (livro), “books” (livros), “newspaper” (jornal), “newspapers” (jornais), “pen” (caneta), “pens” (canetas), etc.

• Ou seja, não é nada tão complicado assim entender os tais countable nouns. Afinal, quase tudo no mundo tem singular e plural. Agora, o que dizer dos “uncountable nouns”? O que é isso? Como entender isso? Vejamos!

• “Uncountable nouns” (substantivos incontáveis) é o nome que damos paras as coisas que não contamos; ou seja, elas só existem no singular. Alguns exemplos são: “water” (água), “coffee” (café), “milk” (leite), “sugar” (açúcar), “cheese” (queijo), “rice” (arroz), “butter” (manteiga), “oxygen” (oxigênio), “wine” (vinho), “beer” (cerveja), “luck” (sorte), “salt” (sal), “money” (dinheiro) e outros mais. • Esses substantivos são considerados incontáveis, pois não costumamos dizê-los

ou escrevê-los no plural. Ou seja, não é comum dizermos “two waters” (duas águas), “three waters” (três águas), “four waters” (quatro águas), “five waters” (cinco águas), etc. O problema aqui, no entanto, é que muitos estudantes de inglês no Brasil dizem assim: “Mas porque aqui,a gente conta essas coisas. Tipo, a gente fala “uma água”, “duas águas”, “três águas”, etc.”. 6

The indefine articles a/an(artigos indefinidos), só podem

ser empregados no singular. O plural de a/an é

some/any.

a/an significam um/uma em português, sendo que a

usa-se diante de consoante e an, diante de vogal.

They are easy to recognize, since they are things we can count. For example, we can have one, two, three or more books.

They can be singular or plural. e.g. My cat is white.

In the plural, they usually take an S. e.g. My brother loves dogs.

Brazil is famous for growing oranges.

We can use an indefinite article before a countable noun. e.g. I have a cat.

I had an orange after lunch.

We can use SOME, ANY, A FEW and MANY. e.g. I need some lemons to make a cake.

I don’t have any French books in my personal library. I have a few lemons in my fridge.

Uncountable nouns are abstractions, substances, concepts which can’t be separated and counted.

All uncountable nouns are used in the singular form. e.g. That information is very impressive.

We can use SOME, ANY, A LITTLE and MUCH. e.g. I don’t have much milk in my fridge.

Do you need any information? I just have a little of milk at home.

We don’t use indefinite articles (a/an) with uncountable nouns. We use QUANTIFIERS. Look at the examples:

chance, energy, honesty, love…

• Activities:

basketball, dancing, singing, tennis…

• Diseases:

AIDS, cancer, influenza, malaria…

• Foods:

beef, bread, fish, fruit, meat…

• Gases:

air, carbon dioxide, oxygen, smoke…

• Liquids:

coffee, gasoline, milk, tea, water…

• Natural phenomena:

electricity, heat, rain,

thunder…

dust, pepper, salt, sand, sugar…

• Solid elements:

There is any sugar in the kitchen.

My mother buy seven bottles of milk for a week.

She eats a bar of chocolate whenever she wants.

He met me with a bunch of flower in his arms.

There is so much butter in this meal.
