A B S T R A C T T h e p u r p o s e of t h i s s t u d s is to i n v e s t i g a t e t he p o s s i b i l i t y to t e a c h B r a z i l i a n s t u d e n t s , b e g i n n e r s in th e s t u d y of a f o r e i g n l a n g u a g e , h o w to r e a d w i t h c o m p r e h e n s i o n s i m p l e , but a u t h e n t i c E n g l i s h t e x t s . T h e r e s e a r c h is b a s e d on the i n t e r a c t i v e m o d e l of r e a d i n g and on the h y p o t h e s e s that it is p o s s i b l e to t e a c h h o w to r e a d a f o r e i g n 1a n g u a g e ,t h r o u g h the u s e of s o m e r e a d i n g s t r a t e g i e s / a c t i v i t i e s such as p r e - r e a d i n g a c t i v i t i e s , the us e of c o g n a t e s , s k i m m i n g , s c a n n i n g , i d e n t i f y i n g t he m a i n idea, k e y - w o r d s , and t h e m a i n p o i n t s of the text. T h e s e s t r a t e g i e s / a c t i v i t i e s a l l o w t h e s t u d e n t s t o get the m e s s a g e of the text, e v e n w i t h o u t h a v i n g a g o o d c o m m a n d of t he f o r e i g n l a n g u a g e T h e s u b j e c t s i n v o l v e d in the p r o j e c t w e r e 151 s t u d e n t s of the 7th g r a d e of 5 M u n i c i p a l S c h o o l s in F l o r i a n ó p o l i s . T h e m a t e r i a l s p r e p a r e d for t h i s p r o j e c t w e r e a p p l i e d by 5 t e a c h e r s ( r e s e a r c h e r i n c l u d e d ) . S i x t y - o n e s t u d e n t s wh o did not us e t h e s e m a t e r i a l s w e r e a l s o p r e - and p o s t t e s t e d in o r d e r to c o m p a r e t h e i r p e r f o r m a n c e w i t h t h e r e s u l t s of the s t u d e n t s w h o us ed the m a t e r i a l s . T h e 151 s t u d e n t s w h o r e c e i v e d the t r e a t m e n t w e r e s u b m i t t e d to t h r e e Unit Tests, and w e r e a l s o s u b j e c t i v e l y e v a l u a t e d by the t e a c h e r s for t h e i r p e r f o r m a n c e and p a r t i c i p a t i o n in c l a s s . F i n a l l y , s t u d e n t s and t e a c h e r s a n s w e r e d q u e s t i o n n a i r e s on a t t i t u d e in o r d e r to c h e c k t h e i r o p i n i o n on t h e m a t e r i a l s and m e t h o d o l o g y u s e d in t he st ud y . T h e r e s u l t s of t h e s t u d y a l l o w the r e s e a r c h e r to c o n c l u d e that it is p o s s i b l e to t e a c h y o u n g s t u d e n t s , b e g i n n e r s in t h e s t u d y of
the E n g l i s h l a n g u a g e , h o w to read w i t h c o m p r e h e n s i o n e l e m e n t a r y E n g l i s h t e n t s , s i n c e t h e s u b j e c t s i n v o l v e d in t h e p r o j e c t i m p r o v e d s i g n i f i c a n t l y f r o m t h e p r e - to the p o s t t e s t and most of t h em ( 6 0 .5 %) had m o r e t h a n 7 0 % of c o r r e c t a n s w e r s in t h e t h r e e Unit T e s t s T h e r e w as a s i g n i f i c a n t c o r r e l a t i o n b e t w e e n t h e r e s u l t s of the p r e - and p o s t t e s t s as wel l , and the c o r r e l a t i o n s b e t w e e n t h e r e s u l t s of the Unit T e s t s and t h e p r e - and p o st t e s t w e r e in t he m a j o r i t y a l s o s i g n i f i c a n t A d d i t i o n a l y , the h a r m o n y of t h e s t u d e n t s p e r f o r m a n c e w as r e f l e c t e d in t h e c o r r e l a t i o n s b e t w e e n t he s t u d e n t s a c h i e v e m e n t in the t e s t s and t h e s u b j e c t i v e e v a l u a t i o n c a r r i e d out by the t e a c h e r s .
The m a t e r i a l s p r e p a r e d for this s t u d y s h o w e d to be a d e q u a t e f o r t he F l o r i a n ó p o l i s m u n i c i p a l s t u d e n t s , b e c a u s e t h e r e a d i n g c o m p r e h e n s i o n o b j e c t i v e s p o s e d for the r e s e a r c h w e r e s a t i s f a c t o r i l y a c h i e v e d in t e r m s o f s t u d e n t s ’ p a r t i c i p a t i o n in t h e c l a s s r o o m a c t i v i t i e s , and in t h e s t u d e n t s ' a c h i e v e m e n t in t h e Unit T e s t s . O n e e l e m e n t t h at h e l p e d t h i s i m p r o v e m e n t r e l a t e s to t h e fact that t e a c h e r s h a v e b e e n s u b m i t t e d to e x a m i n a t i o n s in o r d e r to be h i r e d for t h e i r j o b s . As t h e m u n i c i p a l s c h o o l s t u d e n t s a r e a s i g n i f i c a n t part of t h e s t u d e n t p o p u l a t i o n in F l o r i a n ó p o l i s , it is a m a t t e r of a f a i r t r e a t m e n t a nd j u s t i c e to g i v e t h e m t h e s a m e o p p o r t u n i t i e s , r e g a r d i n g f o r e i g n l a n g u a g e , as t h e i r p e e r s of t h e S t a t e S c h o o l S y s t e m . O n e of t h e o b j e c t i v e s of the w or k is to p r o v i d e t h e t e a c h i n g of E n g l i s h in t h e M u n i c i p a l S c h o o l s w i t h a m o r e u n i f o r m m e t h o d o l o g i c a l o r i e n t a t i o n w h i c h c o u l d h e l p the s t u d e n t s to h a v e a m o r e p o s i t i v e attitud^e and a b e t t e r p e r f o r m a n c e in t h e i r E n g l i s h c 1 a s s e s .
A l t h o u g h the r e s e a r c h e r took all t h e n e c e s s a r y s t e p s in o r d e r to s a t i s f a c t o r i l y a c c o m p l i s h t h i s s t u d y , m a n y f a c t s a n d p r o b l e m s c o u l d not be p r e d i c t e d and s o m e w e r e out of her c o n t r o l . T h e r e were,
for e x a m p l e , m o r e l o s s e s in s u b j e c t s t h a n it wa s e x p e c t e d ( f r o m the 3 1 2 s u b j e c t s that w e r e p r e t e s t e d and b e g a n u s i n g t h e m a t e r i a l s , o n l y 151 c o u l d b e u s e d in t h e s t u d y , and f r o m t h e 117 t h a t w e r e p r e t e s t e d
m e t h o d o l o g y , o n l y 61 w e r e p o s t t e s t e d ) . S o m e of t h e p r o b l e m s that had a d i r e c t i n f l u e n c e on t h e s t u d y w e r e t he f o l l o w i n g :
- t h e r e w e r e m a n y c h a n g e s of t e a c h e r s d u r i n g t h e s c h o o l year; d e s p i t e most of the m u n i c i p a l E n g l i s h t e a c h e r s be p e r m a n e n t l y h ired, as t h e p a y m e n t was v e r y low, s e v e r a l a s k e d for a l e a v e w i t h o u t pay. C o n s e q u e n t l y , s u b s t i t u t e t e a c h e r s had to be h i r e d , s o m e t i m e s t h e s e t e a c h e r s w e r e d i f f i c u l t t o find, and yet, w h en t h e y w e r e found, s o m e left t he job a f t e r a s h or t time; thus, a g a i n o t h e r s u b s t i t u t e t e a c h e r s had to be f ound;
- t h e r e w e r e t wo s t r i k e s d u r i n g the s chool y e a r of 1989, l a s t i n g m o r e t h a n o n e m o n t h each ;
