Notes
1. To whom I am indebted for a long and very informative interview. All the quotations in this chapter are derived from that interview.
2. The Science Alive Agency, created in 1996, though formally an association, is fully funded by the Ministry of Science (Delicado 2009b, Miller et al 2002). It runs a network of sixteen science centres scattered throughout the country and promotes a wide array of activities: science competitions for schools, summer activities in astronomy, biology, geology and engineering, S&T week, summer internships for high school students in research centres, international projects.
3. It must be said that the majority of visitors to science centres and museums in Portugal are school children, which are left out of Eurobarometer surveys. Furthermore, most of the exhibitions in these institutions are mainly aimed at children, which in turn helps to explain their lack of popularity among adults. Nevertheless, Portugal has low rates of public participation in all kinds of cultural activities (see, for instance, EC 2007), which is chief ly due to the relatively low average education level of the population.
