“Verb to be” in the past: expressa os verbos ser e estar no passado.
PRESENT
PAST
She is my friend. She was my friend. (Ela era minha amiga.) I am at the bookstore. I was at the bookstore. (Eu estava na livraria.)
They are eating hamburger. They were eating hamburger. (Eles estavam comendo hambúrger.) He is very happy. He was very happy. (Ele estava muito feliz.)
Na forma negativa, acrescentamos o
“NOT” após os verbos WAS e WERE: Ex: They were not eating hamburger.
Na forma interrogativa,
fazemos a inversão do sujeito e do verbo: Ex: Was he very happy?

“There to be” in the past
Sabemos que “There is” e “There are” são usados no
presente:
Ex: There is a boy in the line. - Há um menino na fila. (singular) There are three people in the line. - Há três pessoas na fila.
(plural)
Frases no passado, escrevemos desta forma:
There was a boy in the line. - Havia um menino na fila (singular)
There were three people in the line. - Haviam três pessoas na fila. (plural)
Na forma negativa, acrescentamos o “not” após there was/ there were:
There was not(wasn’t) a boy in the line.
Na forma interrogativa, fazemos a inversão da estrutura:
Was there a boy in the line?
