Our 2013 Impact Factor has risen to 0.796, from last year’s 0.676. This result demonstrates that Brazilian Journal of Pharmacognosy

continues to grow from strength to strength. The current 87% growth is due to citations derived from other journals, and only 13% is due to self-citations.

Among the more than 100 Brazilian scientific journals indexed to ISI, BJP is in the 34th place and has the highest impact factor among those in the field of Pharmacy, which puts us in an excellent position among the top journals in the country.

Thank you to all who have contributed to the journal’s success so far: to our authors, who continue to send us their research and let us publish their work; to our referees, whose efforts continue to be as guardians of quality of what is published; to our readers, especially those that repay us by informing us about the problems and advise us on how to grow; and to our Editorial and Advisory Boards, whose work is priceless. We are very grateful for your support.

The growth of our journal is quite evident when we access recently published data in the SCImago website (http://www.scimagojr.com/journalsearch. php?q=5400152628&tip=sid&exact=no). In the category of Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Pharmaceutics (miscellaneous), we reached the Q1 quartile, the highest value.

To keep our journal progressive is a never-ending and obstinate process. There is still much work to be done and a long way to go to reach the vital impact in the area of natural products and pharmacognosy.

We are also meeting our challenges step by step. However, we need massive and constant cooperation from reviewers. They bring the required contribution to improve the manuscripts and, furthermore, with their expertise, they are the real actors that contribute to the growth of science. Whenever a manuscript receives a critique or a contribution to

improve the results, when a question is asked or a compliment given, all aspects of the review are valuable to improve the article and, hence, improve the quality of the journal’s publications. Then, the researchers must understand that the review of manuscripts is an important aspect of the scientific work to allow the growth of science. Science only grows with the contribution of its peers.

Brazilian scientific journals have yet another problem to overcome. First, we have to realize that the BJP is published today in partnership with Elsevier and the articles are available Open Access in two of the most important scientific portals (Science Direct and SciElo Brazil), which gives a great international visibility to publications. Second, the graphic quality of our journal does not owe any international journal, as it is today. However, authors do not appear to recognize this. They still initially seek to publish their articles in journals abroad, some with very high costs, rather than looking primarily to Brazilian journals. This problem is, to our understanding, a cultural issue in Brazil, and it is one that we have to overcome. As we look at the recently published JCR, only one Brazilian journal has an IF above 2.0. It is hard to grow if Brazilian authors do not consider Brazilian journals as their first choice to publish the results of the research. The financial efforts made by the Publications Program of the MCT/CNPq/ CAPES will only be all-inclusive, and national journals could achieve better indices in the next few years if we increase credibility among Brazilian authors.

As a closing remark, again I would like to express a special gratitude to the Associate Editors for their dedication, creativity, and help in making our journal the special publication it is today.
