et ready for a truly monumental stay in Estremoz. The former Royal Palace, which involves the extraordinary structure of the original castle’s keep, all made of white marble of the region, will be your home for a few days. When entering this Pestana Historic Hotel, let yourself be impressed by the wide marble staircase and the decorative tiles and enter the rooms that are beautifully decorated with paintings, tapestries, pottery and other art objects that help make the environment even more sumptuous and princely.

RESTAURANT
OF THE POUSADA
Exceed all your expectations when you allow yourself to
lunch or dinner at the high-ceiling room with imposing
stone pilasters that add monumentality to your meal.
The chairs, wide, heavy and comfortable, beg you not to
rush, to taste and give due attention to the experience
of tasting a bit of Alentejo in the royal residence. Ask for
snacks without any hesitation; they are always based
on seasonal and regional products. The green olives
themselves, with the characteristic acidity of the Alentejo,
set the tone to a full, comforting meal.
Be sure to try the pork shank, awarded in regional
contests, or the golden cod, whose original recipe of
Elvas is more than 40 years old. Look for the seasonal
suggestions in the menu, it is obvious that in August you
will hardly feel like a boar “feijoada” made on bread, but
in December it is perhaps the most appealing dish of the
menu. And, whatever you do, be sure to taste the famous
Estremoz water pudding, presented here in a small single
dose which you will be amazed to know is made using only

E
stremoz is one of the most
important villages in the Alentejo
Region placed in a strategic
location, on the route from Lisbon to
Madrid. Encircled by two city walls, we
can find a first wall surrounding the
historical centre known as “Vila Velha”
and a second one protecting the lower
part of the village.
Located on a hill, Estremoz offers very
beautiful surrounding landscapes. The
climate generally is mild and the high
temperatures during the summer, almost
invariably, create a golden scenario by
the sun shining for hours and the marble
quarries.
Find out the main farms and wine
producers. You will be dazzled by this
heritage full of churches and palaces.
OUT
Estremoz
is the “White City” of the Alentejo
thanks to its rows of white houses
and the marble deposits.
Walking through the Old Village, the
“Vila Velha”, — the historical centre
of Estremoz, discover the beautiful
D. José I Square, better known as the
“Largo do Rossio”, where the Antiques
Fair and Flea Market is celebrated each
Saturday. Sports such as hunting, fishing
and shooting are the most practiced in
this region, together with bird watching,
which fascinates both the inhabitants
and the innumerable visitors.
In the mountains of “Serra d’Ossa”
and in the area of “Campo Maior”, the
rarest bird species can be photographed.
Do not end your stay without seeing
the vineyards and wine producing cellars,
like the “Herdade das Servas”
or the “Adega João Portugal Ramos”,
both located in Penha de Estremoz.

In addition to its great history, Estremoz
boasts a vast and very beautiful heritage.
Within the walls of the historical centre,
start your visit with a tour to the 13th
century Medieval Castle and the Rainha
Santa Chapel — the building in which the
Pousada Rainha Santa Isabel is embedded.
Also in the centre, you will find the
S. Francisco Convent and Church,
charming palaces such as the “Palácio
Reynolds” and the “Palácio dos Marqueses
da Praia e Monforte”. The “Prof. Joaquim
Vermelho Municipal Museum” exhibits
pieces of sacred art, furniture and
a very valuable collection of the city’s
clay figurines. Outside the town, visit
Evoramonte, a tiny village composed
of barely two quiet streets, and a castle
considered to be one of the great
wonders of the Alentejo Region.
