Introduction
Theknowledgeconcerningmayflies(Ephemeroptera:Insecta)
in Brazil has increased considerably in recent years. With the
increaseoftaxonomicpapersand publishedgeographical
distri-bution,thenumberofspeciesreportedfromthecountryalmost
doubledintwodecades(Da-SilvaandSalles,2012).Notlongagothe
stateofEspíritoSantowasconsideredunderstudiedwithrespect
totheorderinthecountry.However,afterthepublicationofthe
firstsurveyofEphemeroptera(Sallesetal.,2010),andaseriesof
taxonomicpapersbasedonmaterialfromthestate(Salles,2010;
De-Souzaetal.,2011;MassariolandSalles,2011;SallesandLima,
2011),thissituationhasdrasticallychanged.Thenumberofmayfly
speciesreportedfromthestatein2006waseight,andnowmore
than80specieshavebeenrecordedand/ordescribed.
Nevertheless,asinmoststudiesconductedinBrazil,thevast
majorityoftheserecordswereachievedbasedonmaterialcollected

Threeundescribedspecieswerefound,oneofCaenisStephens,
1835(Caenidae)andtwoofSimothraulopsisDemoulin,1966
(Lep-tophlebiidae),besidesoneundescribedgenusandspeciesofthe
familyLeptohyphidae.Takingintoaccountthespeciespreviously
reportedforthestate,around20%werefoundduringthisproject.
Two morphospecies of Leptophlebiidae (Thraulodes sp. and
Ulmeritoidessp.)and threeofBaetidae(Camelobaetidiussp.,
Par-acloeodescf.waimiriandParacloeodessp.)couldnotbeidentified,
becausetheirdiagnosticcharacterscannotbeseenbasedonthe
specimenscollected(Leptophlebiidae)orbecausetheassociation
withnymphsisessentialfortherecognitionofthespecies
(Baeti-dae).
Withrespecttothefamilies,Leptophlebiidaewasthemost
rep-resentativewith11 species(33.3%), followed byLeptohyphidae
withninespecies(27.2%),andBaetidaewithsixspecies(18.2%).
ThelowestnumberofspecieswasrecordedforPolymitarcyidae
and Caenidae withfive(15.1%) and two (6.1%) species,
respec-tively.Generally,instudiesdevelopedinSouthAmerica(orBrazil),
Baetidaeisthemostrepresentativefamily,closelyfollowedby
Lep-tophlebiidaeandthenLeptohyphidae(Sallesetal.,2004,2010a;
Francischetti,2007;Shimanoetal.,2011;Limaetal.,2012).
How-ever,thecompositionofthemayflyfaunawasdistinctfromthose
foundin studiesperformedinSoutheasternRegionandstateof
EspíritoSanto (e.g.Boldriniet al.,2009;SallesandNascimento,
2009;Moreiraetal.,2010;Sallesetal.,2010;Salles,2010;Lima et al., 2012; Barcelos-Silva et al., 2012).The differenceof
pro-portionoffamiliesandcompositionofspeciescanbeattributed
totwouncommonapproaches.First,wecapturedadultsinstead
of nymphs. This fact favored not only the finding of families
wherenymphshavecryptichabitats,suchasPolymitarcyidaeand
Caenidae,butalsotheidentificationatthespecieslevelofmostof
thefamiliesexceptforBaetidae(theonlygroupamongmayflies
inwhichtaxonomyisbasedalmostexclusivelyonnymphalstage).
Thesecondapproach,certainly,isduetothesizeand
characteris-ticsofthewaterbody.Rivers,giventheamountoffinesediment
andtheexistenceofsemi-lenticareas,aremuchmoresuitablefor
CaenidaeandPolymitarcyidae(Domínguezetal.,2006,2009;
Da-SilvaandSalles,2012).Thehighdiversityofspeciesandtheamount
