As th e s o c i a l i s s u e s r a i s e d by G i l m a n and S c h r e i n e r c e a s e d to r e c e i v e p o l i t i c a l a t t e n t i o n and as l i t e r a r y c r i t i c i s m s h i f t e d it s f o c u s to th e m o r e f o r m a l a s p e c t s of n a r r a t i v e , b o t h w r i t e r s w e r e r e l e g a t e d to c r i t i c a l s i l e n c e by h i s t o r i c a l and l i t e r a r y s c h o l a r s h i p . W i t h the r a d i c a l i s m of the 1 9 60s and 1 9 70 s an d the e n s u i n g c o n c e r n w i t h t h e p o l i t i c a l d i m e n s i o n of n a r r a t i v e in the 1980s, t h e y w e r e a g a i n b r o u g h t to t h e f o r e f r o n t , e s p e c i a l l y of f e m i n i s t c r i t i c i s m . In t h i s d i s s e r t a t i o n I a t t e m p t to r e s c u e the i m p o r t a n c e of G i l m a n an d S c h r e i n e r in t h e i r l i f e t i m e , by d i s c u s s i n g s o m e of th e i d e a s d e v e l o p e d in t h e i r most i n f l u e n t i a l t h e o r e t i c a l works, n a m e l y G i l m a n ' s U o m e n a n d E c o n o m i c s (1898) and S c h r e i n e r ’s W o m a n a n d L a b o r ( 1 9 1 1 ) . T h i s is e f f e c t e d in th e first c h a p t e r , a f t e r a b r i e f h i s t o r i c a l c o n t e x t u a l i z a t i o n p r o v i d e d in the I n t r o d u c t i o n . S c o t t t r a c e t h e h i s t o r y of E u r o p e a n w o m e n ' s work ( E n g l i s h a n d F r e n c h ) f r o m the p r e - i n d u s t r i a l era to o u r days. T h e y d i v i d e t h e i r a n a l y s i s i n t o t h r e e p e r i o d s w h i c h t h e y call T h e F a m i l y E c o n o m y , T h e F a m i l y W a g e E c o n o m y and The F a m i l y C o n s u m e r E c o n o m y in o r d e r t o i n v e s t i g a t e t h e r o l e w o m e n p l a y e d w i t h i n e a c h r e g a r d i n g w or k a n d f a mi ly. In t h e F a m i l y E c o n o m y p e r i o d , w h i c h p r e d o m i n a t e d un t i l the b e g i n n i n g of th e 1 9 ^ c e n t u r y , th e p r o d u c t i v e a c t i v i t y was held w i t h i n t h e h o u s e h o l d and i n v o l v e d all the f a m i l y m e m b e r s men, w o m e n an d c h i l d r e n . T h e r o l e of m a r r i e d w o m e n at t h i s t i m e w a s v e r y d i v e r s i f i e d a n d d e m a n d i n g . B e s i d e s c o n t r i b u t i n g to the f a m i l y ' s e c o n o m i c well b e i n g by e n g a g i n g in p r o d u c t i o n for e x c h a n g e an d h o u s e h o l d c o n s u m p t i o n , th e w o m a n wa s a l s o r e s p o n s i b l e for b e a r i n g an d t a k i n g c a r e of t h e c h i l d r e n (44). T h e h i g h f e r t i l i t y r a t e of t h i s p e r i o d d e m a n d e d an i n t e r r u p t i o n in the w o m a n ' s p r o d u c t i v e a c t i v i t i e s , but the e q u a l l y h i g h i n f a n t m o r t a l i t y r a t e p e r m i t t e d h e r a quick r e t u r n
to h e r p r o d u c t i v e wo r k , s i n c e it s h o r t e n e d the t i m e spent on n u r s i n g t h e c h i l d r e n . T i l l y an d S co t t c o n c l u d e that " h i g h f e r t i l i t y , h i g h m o r t a l i t y , a s m a l l s c a l e h o u s e h o l d o r g a n i z a t i o n of p r o d u c t i o n and l i m i t e d r e s o u r c e s me an t that w o m e n ' s t i m e wa s C s p e n t p r i m a r i l y in p r o d u c t i v e a c t i v i t y " 0 2 7 ) . T h i s p a n o r a m a c h a n g e d , h o w e v e r , w h e n the p r o d u c t i o n was d i s p l a c e d t o l a r g e r p r o d u c t i v e u n i t s — t h e f a c t o r i e s — and the f a m i l y m e m b e r s h a d to l e a v e t h e i r h o m e s to work for wages . T h i s t r a n s f o r m a t i o n in th e m o d e of p r o d u c t i o n s t a r t e d a l r e a d y in 1750 in E n g l a n d , but o n l y l a t e r it b e c a m e a r e a l i t y in o t h e r c o u n t r i e s . T h i s n e w f o r m of e c o n o m i c o r g a n i z a t i o n k n o w n as the F a m i l y W a g e E c o n o m y p o s e d h i n d r a n c e s to f e m a l e p a r t i c i p a t i o n in p r o d u c t i o n by s e p a r a t i n g t h e p r o d u c t i v e an d r e p r o d u c t i v e - d o m e s t i c a t i v i t i e s f r o m a s i n g l e p l a c e , t h e h o u s e h o l d . The m a r r i e d w o m a n h a d to w i t h d r a w f r o m h e r w a g e e a r n i n g a c t i v i t y w h e n e v e r s h e w a s n e e d e d in thé h o m e or b e c a m e p r e g n a n t . As a r e s u l t , " h e r w o r k t e n d e d t o b e e p i s o d i c and i r r e g u l a r " (228) and m e n b e c a m e t h e p r i m a r y w a g e - e a r n e r s in the family. W i t h t h e d e c l i n e of t h e t e x t i l e i n d u s t r y , w h i c h e m p l o y e d m os t w o m e n w o r k e r s , a n d t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of the h e a v y i n d u s t r y by t h e e a r l y t w e n t i e t h c e n t u r y , w h i c h p r e f e r r e d "an a d u l t m a l e l a b o u r f o r c e " , th e w o m e n , w h o n e e d e d to e n g a g e in p a i d work, m o v e d t o t h e t e r c i a r y s e c t o r w h e r e "an i n c r e a s i n g n u m b e r of w h i t e c o l l a r j o b s w e r e o f f e r e d " (228). T h i s p e r i o d w a s m a r k e d by an i m p r o v e m e n t of t h e l i v i n g s t a n d a r d of m a n y w o r k i n g - c l a s s f a m i l i e s , t h e n o r g a n i z e d on a " c o n s u m e r e c o n o m y " b a s i s . T h e r o l e of f a m i l y m e m b e r s w i t h i n t h i s n e w e c o n o m i c o r d e r b e c a m e m o r e s h a r p l y d e f i n e d , w i t h h u s b a n d s and u n m a r r i e d c h i l d r e n as w a g e - e a r n e r s a n d w i v e s r e s p o n s i b l e for c h i l d c a r e and h o u s e h o l d m a n a g e m e n t . O n l y t h o s e w h o w e r e o b l i g e d by c i r c u n s t a n c e s left t h e i r h o m e s to e n g a g e in p a i d work. For t h e s e w o m e n th e s t a y i n g at h o m e w a s v i e w e d as t h e " s i g n of h e a l t h , s t a b i l i t y an d p r o s p e r i t y of a h o u s e h o l d " (196). W h i l e t h e w o m e n of the w o r k i n g c l a s s d e v e l o p e d t h i s i m a g e as t h e ideal b e c a u s e of e c o n o m i c r e a s o n s , t h e m i d d l e c l a s s f a m i l y i d e a l i z e d h o m e as the r i g h t p l a c e for w o m e n on a m o r a l , r e l i g i o u s and i d e o l o g i c a l b a s i s . A c c o r d i n g t o P o l l y W y n n A l l e n , T h i s i d e o l o g y , o f t e n d e s i g n a t e d " t h e cul t of d o m e s t i c i t y " , d e c r e e d th at w o m e n h a d n o p l a c e in the i n d u s t r i a l w o r k fo r c e . It s u b t l y c a m o u f l a g e d t h e e x p l o i t a t i o n o f w o m e n ' s u n p a i d l a b o r in t h e home. It s p o k e of s o c i e t y in t e r m s of t w o s e p a r a t e spheres-, m a n ' s d a n g e r o u s , p u b l i c r e a l m s o u t s i d e , and w o m a n ' s s a f e , p r i v a t e r e a l m i n s i d e , the four w a l l s o f h o m e . It o r d a i n e d w o m e n to be p u r i f y i n g a g e n t s of f a m i l y s t a b i l i t y by c a r r y i n g out t h e i r t i m e l e s s r o l e s as w i v e s and m o t h e r s e n c l o s e d w i t h i n t h e b o u n d a r i e s of d o m e s t i c s p a c e . What it o b s c u r e d a b o u t t h e e c o n o m i c v a l u e of w o m e n ' s f a m i l y r o l e s in t h e h o m e it a t t e m p t e d to c o m p e n s a t e r h e t o r i c a l 1y , p a y i n g t r i b u t e t o t h e a l l e g e d s e l f l e s s n e s s , d e l i c a c y an d i n t r i n s i c d o m e s t i c i t y of w o m e n . At first, the sh ift f r o m t h e d o m e s t i c to th e i n d u s t r i a l m o d e of p r o d u c t i o n wa s not b e n e f i c i a l to w o m e n b e c a u s e by r e m o v i n g the a c t i v i t i e s f r o m t h e h o m e it a l s o took w o m e n ' s e c o n o m i c val ue . S i n c e d o m e s t i c s e r v i c e s u c h as m a n a g i n g th e h o u s e h o l d , r e a r i n g the c h i l d r e n and n o u r i s h i n g t h e f a m i l y m e m b e r s w e r e not t a k e n as p r o d u c t i v e w o r k , but as a n a t u r a l
t r a i t of m o t h e r s and w i v e s , w o m e n lost t h e i r p o s i t i o n as m e n ' s p a r t n e r s to s t a n d as t h e i r d e p e n d e n t s . T h e n e w e c o n o m i c o r d e r a f f e c t e d m a r r i e d w o m e n in p a r t i c u l a r . Th e a u t o n o m y t h e y h a d w h i l e d a u g h t e r s , w a g e e a r n e r s and as s u c h c o n t r i b u t o r s to th e f a m i l y b u d g e t d i s a p p e a r e d as t h e y c o n s t i t u t e d t h e i r ow n f a m i l i e s b e c o m i n g w i v e s and m o t h e r s ( T I L L Y 193). M a r r i a g e , t h e r e f o r e , m e a n t a d r a w b a c k for w o m e n ' s i n d e p e n d e n c e an d p o s e d a g r e a t p r o b l e m for t h o s e who, like G i l m a n and S c h r e i n e r , w e r e not i n c l i n e d to a b d i c a t e e i t h e r t h e i r a u t o n o m y or t h e i r d e s i r e t o ma r r y . O n l y later, by t h e 1 9 3 0 ' s , w h e n t h e i n d u s t r i a l d e v e l o p m e n t r e q u i r e d a l a r g e n u m b e r o f w o m e n in t h e m a r k e t p l a c e , di d the y r e g a i n t h e i r p o s i t i o n as e c o n o m i c f a c t o r s a n d s t a r t e d s l o w l y to w i t h d r a w f r o m th e " p r i v a t e s p h e r e " to e n t e r t h e p u b l i c one . A v i e w of the f e m a l e l a b o r f o r c e in t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s f r o m 1 8 2 0 to 19 80 is p r o v i d e d by L y n n Y. W e i n e r in F r o m W o r k i n g G i r l to W o r k i n g M o t h e r . S h e d i s t i n g u i s h e s t w o p h a s e s w i t h i n th at t i m e span: the first, g o i n g f r o m 1 8 2 0 t o 1 9 2 0 a n d m a r k e d by t h e p r e s e n c e of s i n g l e y o u n g w o m e n in t h e m a r k e t p l a c e s h e c a l l s “t h e e r a of th e w o r k i n g g i r l ”; t h e s e c o n d , f r o m 1 9 2 0 t o 1980, c h a r a c t e r i z e d by the p r e v a l e n c e of m a r r i e d w o m e n on t h e f e m a l e 0 l a b o u r f o r c e she n a m e s “t h e e r a o f t h e w o r k i n g m o t h e r " . W e i n e r o b s e r v e s that, a l t h o u g h h i s t o r i a n s u s u a l l y c o n s i d e r t h e e n t r a n c e of w o m e n i n t o the m a r k e t p l a c e a r o u n d t h e m i d n i n e t e e n t h c e n t u r y , t h e y had b e e n w o r k i n g s i n c e e a r l i e r t i m e s . W h i l e t h e b u l k o f t h e f e m a l e l a b o r f o r c e w a s f o r m e d by " d e s t i t u t e , b l a c k o r i m m i g r a n t " w o m e n w h o w e r e " c o n s i d e r e d to be b e y o n d t h e p a l e of m i d d l e c l a s s

By the end of the e i g h t e e n t h c e n t u r y f e m a l e i d l e n e s s w a s c o n s i d e r e d a sin an d w o m e n w e r e not o n l y a l l o w e d but a l s o e x p e c t ed t o work for e c o n o m i c a n d m o r a l r e a s o n s ( W E I N E R 32) . H o w e v e r , by the e a r l y n i n e t e e n t h c e n t u r y , t h i s at t i t u d e p r o w o m e n 's e m p 1o y m e n t s t a r t e d c h a n g i n g as the i d e o l o g y of d o m e s t ic it y b e c a m e s t r o n g e r an d r e i n f o r c e d w o m e n 's r o l e s . T h i s i d e o l o g y m a i n t a i n e d that w o m e n s h o u l d be r e s t r i c t e d to t h e d o m e s t i c realm, r e a r i n g . t h e c h i l d r e n an d p e r f o r m i n g h o u s e w o r k . Th e e x a g g e r a t e d e m p h a s i s p l a c e d on w o m e n ' s r e s p o n s i b i l i t y in s h a p i n g t h e c h a r a c t e r o f t h e f u t u r e c i t i z e n s r e s u l t e d in an o v e r v a l u a t i o n of m o t h e r h o o d a n d o f t h e p r e p a r a t i o n for m o t h e r h o o d . As t h e m a j o r i t y of f e m a l e w o r k e r s by t h i s t i m e was. o f s i n g l e y o u n g wo me n, t h e s u b j e c t of p u b l i c c o n c e r n b e c a m e " f u t u r e m o t h e r h o o d " . It w a s a r g u e d by t h e o p p o s e r s of f e m a l e e m p l o y m e n t that the b a d l i v i n g a n d w o r k i n g c o n d i t i o n s w o u l d a f f e c t n e g a t i v e l y the h e a l t h a n d m o r a l s of th e f u t u r e m o t h e r s , t h r e a t e n i n g the q u a l i t y of t h e n ex t g e n e r a t i o n s and t h e “m i d d l e c l a s s i d e a l s of fa m i l y l if e" ( W E I N E R 31). D e s p i t e the c o n t r o v e r s y c r e a t e d a r o u n d t h e w o r k i n g g i r l s , t h e n u m b e r of " r e s p e c t a b l e " s i n g l e a n d s e l f - s u p p o r t i n g w o m e n w o r k i n g out and liv i n g on t h e i r o w n i n c r e a s e d by th e s e c o n d h a l f of th e n i n e t e e n t h c e n t u r y , f o s t e r i n g a d e b a t e on w o m e n ' s

W o r k i n g w o m e n w e r e e r r o n e o u s l y r e f e r r e d t o as " h o m e l e s s ’* or ‘‘w o m e n a d r i f t " , t e r m s a p p l i e d “to t h e d e s t i t u t e w o m e n of t h e s l u m s w h o w e r e l i t e r a l l y w i t h o u t a s h e l t e r a n d w h o s l ep t in p o l i c e s t a t i o n s , p u b l i c p a r k s an d a l l e y s " ( W E I N E R 36). T h e a m b i g u i t y of t h e t e r m c o m p r o m i s e d t h e r e a l c h a r a c t e r o f t h e w o r k i n g w o m e n i m p l y i n g t h e i d e a th at t h e y w e r e "on t h e c u t t i n g e d g e of d i s r e p u t e " (38). Th e w o r s t t r a n s g r e s s i o n of m o r a l i t y — p r o s t i t u t i o n — w a s a t t r i b u t e d to t h e w o r k i n g w o m e n ' s v u l n e r a b i l i t y t o w a r d s i m m o r a l b e h a v i o r . In fact, p r o s t i t u t i o n s e r v e d as an a l t e r n a t i v e i n c o m e s o u r c e for t h o s e w h o c o u l d not s u p p o r t t h e m s e l v e s w i t h lo w w a g e s . Th e ro ut i n i z a t i o n o f w o r k , w h i c h w a s s u p p o s e d to a l t e r w o m e n ' s s e n s i b i l i t y , l o n e l i n e s s an d th e lack of d o m e s t i c i n f l u e n c e s w e r e a l s o r e p o r t e d as c a u s e s o f i n c r e a s i n g i m m o r a l i t y . The d e b a t e o v e r the s t a t u s of w o r k i n g w o m e n a n d t h e d i f f i c u l t i e s fou nd in t h e i r w o r k i n g c o n d i t i o n , r e s u l t e d ' in a p r o c e s s of r é é v a l u a t i o n a n d r e f o r m . T h e i m p r o v e m e n t o f w o r k i n g c o n d i t i o n s t h r o u g h l a w s e s t a b l i s h i n g m i n i m u n w a g e s a n d m a x i m u n w o r k i n g h o u r s r e f l e c t e d t h e p r e o c c u p a t i o n in p r o t e c t i n g f u t u r e m o t h e r s ( W E I N E R 47). T h e s e p r o t e c t i o n i s t m e a s u r e s , h o w e v e r , f a v o r e d b a s i c a l l y m i d d l e c l a s s w h i t e w o m e n , e s p e c i a l l y t h e y o u n g and s i n g l e w h o w o r k e d t e m p o r a r i l y b e f o r e m a r r i a g e . T h e b l a c k a n d
8 p o o r w o m e n c o n t i n u e d t o b e k e p t on t h e e d g e of s o c i e t y . A l s o t h e m a r r i e d w o m e n did not b e n e f i t f r o m th e p r o t e c t i v e l e g i s l a t i o n , s i n c e th e m a i n c o n c e r n of r e f o r m e r s w a s t o p r o t e c t t h e p h y s i c a l and m o r a l q u a l i t y of f u t u r e m o t h e r s . G r a d u a l l y t h e g r o u p of o l d e r m a r r i e d wo m e n , a l r e a d y m o t h e r s , r e p l a c e d t h e y o u n g g i r l s as t h e m a i n s o u r c e of f e m a l e l a b o r and c o n s e q u e n t l y t h e y a l s o b e c a m e th e m a i n t a r g e t on t h e d e b a t e o v e r w o r k i n g w o m e n . It w a s u n d e r t h e s e fo ur v i r t u e s , " t h e a t t r i b u t e s of True. W o m a n h o o d ”, that a w o m a n w a s to j u d g e h e r s e l f a n d t o be j u d g e d by he r h u s b a n d , n e i g h b o r s a n d s o c i e t y , a s e x a m p l e s t a k e n f r o m n e a r l y all w o m e n ' s m a g a z i n e s p u b l i s h e d f r o m 1 8 2 0 - 1 8 6 0 a m p l y d e m o n s t r a t e (152). " R e l i g i o n or p i e t y w a s the c o r e of w o m a n ' s v i r t u e s ; th e s o u r c e of h e r s t r e n g t h , ” a f i r m s W e l t e r (15). But t h e real f u n c t i o n of r e l i g i o n in w o m e n ' s l i v e s went b e y o n d t h a t , as t h e f o l l o w i n g e x a m p l e s ho ws : " R e l i g i o n is e x a c t l y wh at a w o m a n needs, for it g i v e s h e r that d i g n i t y that b e s t s u i t s he r d e p e n d e n c e " (133). " P u r i t y " , c o n t i n u e s W e l t e r , " w a s as e s s e n t i a l a s p i e t y t o a y o u n g wo ma n; its a b s e n c e as u n n a t u r a l an d u n f e m i n i n e " (154). A
13 w o m a n w h o lost h e r i n n o c e n c e w a s s e e n as a " f a l l e n w o m a n " and the p u n i s h m e n t , o f t e n r e p o r t e d in w o m e n ' s m a g a z i n e s , for s u c h an i n f r a c t i o n wa s m a d n e s s or d e a t h . A w o m a n s h o u l d k e e p he r " g r e a t e s t t r e a s u r e " o n l y to h e r f u t u r e h u s b a n d . An d u n t i l the w e d d i n g n i g h t — "the s i n g l e g r e a t e v e n t of h e r l i f e " — , she wa s s o l e l y r e s p o n s i b l e for h a v i n g it i n t a c t . As s h e w a s c o n s i d e r e d m o r a l l y s u p e r i o r , s t r o n g e r an d p u r e r t h a n man, w h o w a s b e l i e v e d to h a v e a m o r e s e n s u a l n a t u r e , s h e s h o u l d n e v e r g i v e in and risk b e i n g "left in s i l e n t s a d n e s s to b e w a i l C h e r D c r e d u l i t y , i m b e c i l i t y , d u p l i c i t y and p r e m a t u r e p r o s t i t u t i o n " (155). T h e i d e a of m e n ' s s u p e r i o r i t y o v e r w o m e n w a s s t r o n g l y l i n k e d w i t h r e l i g i o u s t e a c h i n g s . -It w a s p r e a c h e d t o b e h e a v e n l y d e t e r m i n e d th at w o m e n w e r e t h e weak, timid, d o u b t f u l , i n c o n s t a n t p a r t of h u m a n i t y , n e e d i n g t h e r e f o r e the p r o t e c t i o n o f t h e s t r o n g e r par t , men. T h e t r u e w o m a n w o u l d u n d e r s t a n d a n d a c c e p t t h i s n a t u r a l law: "A r e a l l y s e n s i b l e w o m a n f e e l s h e r d e p e n d e n c e , s h e d o e s w h a t s h e can, but sh e is c o n s c i o u s of i n f e r i o r i t y , a n d t h e r e f o r e g r a t e f u l for s u p p o r t " (159). In a c c e p t i n g t h i s f a t e t h e V i c t o r i a n w o m a n r e l i n q u i s h e d her own s e l f to s e r v e a n o t h e r . W h a t t h e y w e r e not yet a w a r e of (or w e r e a f r a i d t o f a c e ) w a s t h a t it w a s e x a c t l y t h e i r d e p e n d e n t c o n d i t i o n u p o n ma n that t u r n e d t h e m i n t o weak, r i g h t l e s s and s u b m i s s i v e b e i n g s , a n d not t h e o p p o s i t e .
14 " D o m e s t i c i t y " , c o n c l u d e s W e l t e r , " w a s a m o n g t h e v i r t u e s most p r i z e d by the w o m e n ' s m a g a z i n e s " (162). T h i s is c o m p r e h e n s i b l e s i n c e it w a s w i t h i n t h e p r i v a c y of h o m e tha t th e o t h e r v i r t u e s of a t r u e w o m a n w e r e p e r p e t u a t e d : " T h e r e is c o m p o s u r e at home; t h e r e is s o m e t h i n g s e d a t i v e in t h e d u t i e s w h i c h h o m e i n v ol ve s. T h e r e t h e y w e r e n u r s e s , c o o k s and c l e a n e r s . T h e r e they w e r e t r a i n e d to e n j o y n e e d l e w o r k an d g a r d e n i n g . T h e r e they had t h e i r l e i s u r e a c t i v i t i e s s u c h as w r i t i n g le tt e r s , s i n g i n g , p l a y i n g an i n s t r u m e n t a n d e v e n r e a d i n g , p r o v i d e d that t h e y d i d not r e a d d a n g e r o u s b o o k s , i.e.,. b o o k s that c o u l d m a k e t h e m s k e p t i c a l a b o u t t h e i r p o s i t i o n in s o c i e t y . A l t h o u g h S c h r e i n e r and G i l m a n f o c u s on d i f f e r e n t a s p e c t s to t r a c e t h e e v o l u t i o n of t h e h u m a n race , t h e y r e a c h the' s a m e c o n c l u s i o n : that t h i s p r o c e s s r e s u l t e d in an u n b a l a n c e d r e l a t i o n b e t w e e n ma n and woman , w i t h t h e l a t t e r e c o n o m i c a l l y d e p e n d e n t on the f o r m e r t h r o u g h the e x e r t i o n o f h e r s e x u a l f u n c t i o n s o n ly. T h r o u g h o u t t h e ag e s , s h e say s, t h i s p h e n o m e n o n M a s m o r e e a s i l y f o u n d a m o n g w e a l t h y w o m e n , w h o b e l o n g i n g to a small s e c t i o n of s o c i e t y , r e p r e s e n t e d no real th r ea t. But in her days, t h e n u m b e r of p a r a s i t e w o m e n w a s i n c r e a s i n g fast, d e n o t i n g d a n g e r . S h e a t t r i b u t e s t h i s i n c r e a s e in s e x - p a r a s i t i s m to t w o m a i n r e a s o n s . F i r s t to th e p r o c e s s of i n d u s t r i a l i z a t i o n and t h e e x t e n s i v e u s e of m a c h i n e r y a s a m e a n s of p r o d u c t i o n , w h i c h i m p r o v e d p e o p 1e 's 1 i v i n g s t a n d a r d s c r e a t i n g t h e ideal c o n d i t i o n to d e v e l o p f e m a l e p a r a s i t i s m . S e c o n d , to th e s h r i n k a g e of w o m e n ' s p r o d u c t i v e a c t i v i t i e s an d t h e i r e x c l u s i o n f r o m n e w f i e l d s of labor. S c h r e i n e r c o n s i d e r s p r o d u c t i v e l a b o r not o n l y t h e work p e r f o r m e d o u t s i d e t h e h o me , but a l s o t h e d o m e s t i c t a s k s . A p a r a s i t e w o m a n , she e x p l a i n s , p e r f o r m s n e i t h e r wo rk an d l i v e s at t h e e x p e n s e of a m a l e ( h u s b a n d / f a t h e r o r b r o t h e r ) or t h r o u g h th e e x e r t i o n of h e r s e x u a l f u n c t i o n a l o n e . In t h i s ■'sense, S c h r e i n e r d o e s n o t ^ d i s t i n g u i s h a p a r a s i t e w i f e f r o m a m i s t r e s s or p r o s t i t u t e (104). T h e o n l y d i f f e r e n t i a t i n g a s p e c t , s h e p o n d e r s , is that the l a t t e r "in p l a c e of life, is r e c o g n i z e d as p r o d u c i n g d i s e a s e and d e a t h " ( 104 ). S c h r e i n e r b e l i e v e s th at as s o o n as w o m e n b e c a m e e c o n o m i c a l l y i n d e p e n d e n t by r e - a s s u m i n g t h e i r p l a c e as p r o d u c t i v e a g e n t s in s o c i e t y , p r o s t i t u t i o n w o u l d c o m e to an end. F o r S c h r e i n e r , p r o s t i t u t i o n is "all s e x u a l r e l a t i o n s h i p ba se d, not on t h e s p o n t a n e o u s a f f e c t i o n of th e w o m a n for t h e man, but on t h e n e c e s s i t o u s a c c e p t a n c e by w o m a n of m a t e r i a l g o o d in e x c h a n g e for th e e x e r c i s e of h e r s e x u a l f u n c t i o n " (258). p r o s t i t u t i o n to m a r r i a g e as an e c o n o m i c a r r a n g e m e n t .
The w o m a n w h o d e p e n d s on t h e g r a t i f i c a t i o n of he r s e x u a l f u n c t i o n a l o n e , s h e e x p l a i n s , is d e p e n d e n t on t h e m a l e ' s p o w e r to s u p p o r t her. S h e has, t h e r e f o r e , a l i m i t e d f r e e d o m in c h o o s i n g h e r p a r t n e r . T h e o p p o s i t e o c c u r s w i t h t h e man, w h o h o l d s an a d v a n t a g e o u s e c o n o m i c p o s i t i o n and who, e v e n if not d e s e r v i n g , d o m i n a t e s in th e s e x u a l r e l a t i o n s i m p a i r i n g the c h a n c e s of l e s s r i c h but w o r t h i e r men. The e c o n o m i c i n d e p e n d e n c e of w o m e n w o u l d , in S c h r e i n e r ' s v i ew , a f f e c t p o s i t i v e l y th e r e l a t i o n b e t w e e n the sexes, p r o v i d i n g w o m e n m o r e f r e e d o m of c h o i c e , e i t h e r in t h e s e l e c t i o n of h e r p a r t n e r or in the d e c i s i o n to m a r r y or not, and e s t a b l i s h i n g a r e l a t i v e e q u a l i t y of c h a n c e s b e t w e e n me n of s e c u r i n g t h e i r d e s i r e d c o m p a n i o n . In o t h e r w o r d s , it w o u l d r e v e r t the sexual, r e l a t i o n f r o m an e c o n o m i c a r r a n g e m e n t to wha t it e s s e n t i a l l y is, an a f f e c t i v e union. R e g a r d i n g f a m i l y r e l a t i o n s , S c h r e i n e r c l a i m s that the s u b j u g a t i o n of w o m e n h a s c o n t r i b u t e d to a p o o r m o t h e r h o o d . S c h r e i n e r c o n s i d e r s mo st w o m e n i n c o m p e t e n t in t h e i r r o l e s as m o t h e r s an d e d u c a t o r s . T h e r e a s o n s a r e t h e i r l i m i t i n g d e p e n d e n t c o n d i t i o n , t h e i r e x c l u s i o n f r o m p u b l i c a f f a i r s and t h e i r r e s t r i c t i o n t o t h e d o m e s t i c e n v i r o n m e n t . A l t h o u g h S c h r e i n e r u p h o l d s the V i c t o r i a n ideal of a s e l f - s a c r i f i c i n g m o t h e r h o o d and of m a t e r n i t y as t h e s o u r c e of w o m e n ' s " g e n e r a l s u p e r i o r v i r t u e " and " d e e p e r m o r a l i n s i g h t ” <179), s h e t r i e s to e n h a n c e t h i s c o n c e p t i o n by u r g i n g m o t h e r s to be m o r e p a r t i c i p a n t , s e l f - w i l l e d and i n d e p e n d e n t . An i n t e l l i g e n t and c u l t u r e d m o t h e r , she

" O n l y an a b l e an d l a b o r i n g wo m a n h o o d ca n p e r m a n e n t l y p r o d u c e an a b l e and l a b o r i n g m a n h o o d " (107) s t a t e s S c h r e i n e r , m a k i n g it c l e a r that t h e c h a n g e for a b e t t e r s o c i e t y d e p e n d e d p r i m a r i l y o f an i m p r o v e d w o m a n a n d m o t h e r . T h i s c h a n g e s h o u l d i n e v i t a b l y s t a r t w i t h i n w o m e n ' s fi r s t , if not only, s p h e r e of a c t i o n , th e ho me, an d t h e n be e x t e n d e d to a b r o a d e r s p h e r e , s o c i e t y . S c h r e i n e r p o i n t s out, as a g e n e r a l re s u l t of s e x - p a r a s i t i s m , "a d e c a y in v i t a l i t y and i n t e l l i g e n c e of t h e f e mal e, f o l l o w e d a f t e r a l o n g e r or s h o r t e r p e r i o d by that of h e r m a l e d e s c e n d a n t s an d of h e r e n t i r e s o c i e t y " (77). It is for th e s a k e of the " e n t i r e s o c i e t y , " th e w h o l e ra ce, that sh e p l e a d s for the e x t i n c t i o n of s e x - p a r a s i t i s m . T h e s o l u t i o n is to g i v e w o m e n a l t e r n a t i v e f i e l d s of labor. T h i s a c c o r d i n g to her is "ou r W o m a n ' s R i g h t ! " (65). T h e c l a i m for l a b o r is a c o n s t a n t d e m a n d of S c h r e i n e r ' s c o n t e m p o r a r i e s and it l i e s at th e b a s e of the fi rs t g r e a t w a v e of t h e W o m a n ' s M o v e m e n t .
S c h r e i n e r d e v o t e s a w h o l e c h a p t e r of W o m a n and L a b o r to the a n a l y s i s of t h e W o m a n ' s M o v e m e n t of h e r time. S h e d e s c r i b e s it as "a m o v e m e n t s t e a d y and p e r s i s t e n t in o n e d i r e c t i o n , the d i r e c t i o n of i n c r e a s e d a c t i v i t y and c u l t u r e and t o w a r d s the n e g a t i o n of all p o s s i b i l i t y of p a r a s i t i s m in the h u m a n f e m a l e " (142). It is th e w o m e n ' s p e r s i s t e n c e to c o n t i n u e f i g h t i n g for t h e i r r e i n t e g r a t i o n i n t o p r o d u c t i v e l a b o r -- e v e n k n o w i n g that t h e i r a t t i t u d e may lead t h e m to s e l f - s a c r i f i c e , s e x u a l i s o l a t i o n

S c h r e i n e r a t t r i b u t e s t h e o r i g i n of th e W. L. M. to t he w e a l t h y an d i n t e l l e c t u a l w o m e n w h o felt most d e e p l y th e p r o b l e m s c a u s e d by t h e i r d e p e n d e n c e . T h e s e a n d any o t h e r wo m a n : e n g a g e d in c h a n g i n g h e r p o s i t i o n in s o c i e t y by e n l a r g i n g h e r f i e l d s of a c t i o n w e r e u s u a l l y k n o w n as " t h e N e w W o m a n " . T h i s term, w h i c h h a d b e c o m e " t r e n d y " by t h e t u r n o f t h e n i n e t e e n t h c e n t u r y an d w a s f r e q u e n t l y m i s u s e d by the o p p o s e r s of w o m e n ' s e m a n c i p a t i o n , m e a n t a c c o r d i n g to S c h r e i n e r a v e r y old c o n c e p t of W o m a n h o o d . The N e w Wo man, s h e c l a r i f i e s for t h e i n c r e d u l o u s , is of that "old T e u t o n i c W o m a n h o o d , w h i c h t w e n t y c e n t u r i e s a g o p l o w e d its m a r c h t h r o u g h E u r o p e a n f o r e s t s and m o r a s s e s b e s i d e its m a l e c o m p a n i o n " (148). F o r her, v i r i l i t y as a s y n o n y m of s t r e n g t h , c o u r a g e , e n e r g y , is not an e x c l u s i v e l y m a l e q u a l i t y , but a h u m a n f e a t u r e .
T h e v i r i l e w o m e n , t h e n e w w o m e n of t h e e a r l y 2 0 ^ c e n t u r y , a r e t h o s e r e a d y to g i v e up the c o m m o d i t i e s o f a p a r a s i t i c life an d fight for t h e w o m e n ' s r é a d a p t a t i o n i n t o s o c i e t y .
