Music: Third Term Consolidated Report (Spring 2017)

Grade One

Program of study: In the third term students in grade one continued to learn the fundamentals of music through singing, playing musical games, using classroom instruments (rhythm sticks, tambourines, drums, etc.) and movement. Also, the students were introduced to two–part singing by performing simple rounds and two–part songs (“A Ram Sam Sam”, “Magic of Music”.) They mastered their vocal skills by working on an appropriate position for singing, by learning breathing and vocal exercises, and slides. The students have been singing major scale in solfege and practicing it in both directions with Curwen hand signs (up and down).

· Music theory: In the second term students in grade one learned the basic elements of music such as music notation (musical alphabet, the staff, trefble and bass clef, and major scale) and simple rhythmic patterns with quarter notes and rests, and eighth notes and rest.

· Singing: Students reviewed and prepared several songs written by Raffi for our Spring Concert: “Baby Beluga”, “Brush Your Teeth”, “Shake Your Sillies Out”, “Down By The Bay”, and “Rise And Shine”. Also, they learned the songs “Hello To All The Children Of The World” and “Sansa Kroma” (The Hawk Named Sansa).

· Cross Curricular Activities: During music lessons students learned interesting facts about such countries as Ghana (West Africa) and Morocco, and also knew what languages people of the countries speak (Akan and Arabic).

· Music Games: During our music classes the students played singing games “Doggy, doggy” and “London Bridge”.

Music: Third Term Consolidated Report (Spring 2017) Grade Three

Program of Study: Students in grade three fine-tuned the basic elements of music such as dynamics, steady beat, and rhythms (quarter notes and rests, eighth notes and rests, half notes and rests). More complicated combinations of notes and rhythms have been introduced and practiced. We explored these musical elements through singing and the use of recorders. Also, they mastered their vocal skills by working on appropriate singing position, by learning breathing and vocal exercises, and slides. The students have been learning major scale and additive scale, practicing it in both directions with Curwen hand signs (up and down). During the second term the students continued to play recorder.

· Music theory: Students in grade three worked on steady beat, micro/macrobeat, and rhythms with quarter notes and rests, eighth notes and rests, and half notes and rests, whole notes, and time signature.

· Singing: The program is designed to achieve the following goals: ü To foster healthy vocal/choral development of students ü To facilitate focused singing using unison and 2–part singing ü To prepare choral voices for artistically expressive performance

During the term the students learned the songs for our Spring Concert: “Alligator Stroll”, “I’ve Got a Dog”, “Broken Piano”, “Trucks”, and “The End Of A Summer Storm” from the Sandra Boynton’s album of country music “Frog Trouble”.

· Recorders: During the third term we continued working on the “Recorder Karate” method. The “Recorder Karate” program is a curriculum that is designed to teach students how to play the recorder. This method has a positive reward system in which students receive colored "karate belts" to hang from their recorders for each progressively more difficult tune they learn to play. During the term students learned the songs for white (“Hot Cross Buns”), orange (“Merrily We Roll Along”) and green (“It’s Raining”) belts. In grade four we are going to continue to work on the “belts”.
