CHEMICAL TREATMENT INFLUENCE IN THE FUNGI POPULATION, GERMINATION AND VIGOR ON CORN SEEDS
ABSTRACT - Two commercial seed lots of corn (Carol D657 and D769) were evaluated by the seed health tests, tenor of water, germination and vigor (cold test, accelerated aging and electric conductivity), with the objectives of verifying the effect of the chemical treatment of the seeds (captan-56g i.a./100 kg of seeds) in the fungi population and the physiologic quality of the seeds.
The seed health quality was evaluated by blotter test with freezing. It was observed that the product used in the treatment of seeds reduced the incidence of the fungi Fusarium sp. and Penicillium sp., not controlling Cephalosporium sp. With relationship to the tenor of water, the treated seeds presented larger tenor of initial water. It was verified that the seeds of the lot that showed larger vigor (D769) presented smaller infection rate for Cephalosporium sp., Fusarium sp. and Penicillium sp. than the seeds of the lot D657. The germination of seeds with and without chemical treatment didn’t differ significantly.
Index terms: Zea mays, seed pathology, fungicides.
