O objetivo desse curso é proceder a uma introdução didática ao estudo da constituição da esfera da política das relações de violência e poder, de maneira mais geral -enquanto objeto de pesquisa e reflexão em antropologia social. Escolhemos proceder a uma abordagem histórica da disciplina visando desnaturalizar uma trajetória pré-construída, muitas vezes apresentada em cursos de graduação, que data de African Political Systems a gênese da reflexão antropológica sobre o “fenômeno político” (e com essas aspas queremos dizer que a própria idéia de política estará em questão). Sem pretender ministrar um curso de história da Antropologia, queremos ver dele resultar um mapeamento dos problemas constitutivos do campo em apreço, relacioná-lo às discussões de autores “fundadores” das Ciências Sociais, e traçar o seu desenvolvimento.
Não pretendemos que a seleção de textos que proporemos à leitura ativa e engajada, ao debate a partir de textos (e não de sínteses didáticas dos professores), e a exercícios seja exaustiva, ou que incorpore uniformemente todos os desenvolvimentos da disciplina nessa direção, em especial os mais recentes. Mas ao selecionar certos textos, queremos rever onde jazem bases e pontos de partida de um certo campo de estudos que já goz(a)ou mesmo do estatuto de subdisciplina ( a antropologia política), ver quais são as suas “vielas” e suas “grandes avenidas”. Nesse sentido a escolha da tradição britânica como fornecedora de boa parte dos textos selecionados tem essas pretensões e, ainda, carrega o reconhecimento de que nela se encontram algumas das etnografias mais substanciais dentre as percebidas enquanto “clássicas” na disciplina, que certos parâmetros da reflexão antropológica foram constituídos face aos povos africanos.
