INTRODUCTION
Ever since 1797 there have been studies on the Odonata of Portugal, published in an irregular manner and with very heterogeneous significance to the knowledge of the presence and distribution of the 65 species currently recognized as occurring in Portugal (FERREIRA et al., 2006b).
Furthermore, since few Portuguese entomologists focused on the or-
der Odonata, a large amount of the available information results from the
collecting activities of foreign naturalists during their holidays, especially in the last two decades (e.g. BRÄNDLE & RÖDEL, 1994; CHELMICK &
MITCHELL, 1996; DIJKSTRA, 1997; JAHN, 1996; VANAPPELGHEM &
FERNANDEZ, 2003; WEIHRAUCH & WEIHRAUCH, 2003). Hence, des- pite the existence of 144 references with data on the Odonata of Portugal (FERREIRA & WEIHRAUCH, 2005), present knowledge, far from offering a detailed picture of the distribution of the species, is incomplete and geo- graphically biased, indicating the need for the development and application of a comprehensive sampling protocol throughout the country.
During the 1980s knowledge of the Portuguese Odonata experienced a boost with the addition of three species and several other interesting records published by two native workers, Serafim and Carlos Aguiar (AGUIAR &
AGUIAR, 1983, 1985a, 1985b; AGUIAR, 1989). Behind this seemingly modest amount of published records there was an extensive recording effort that covered almost all regions in the country. This paper presents a major part of the unpublished data gathered in those years by the two workers, bringing to light a very interesting but otherwise inaccessible dataset.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A set of Odonata specimens collected by Serafim and Carlos Aguiar in continental Portugal and Madeira during the 1980s was studied. In order to clarify a doubtful record, a critical specimen in the collection of the Museu Zoológico da Universidade de Coimbra (MZCP) was examined.
The species list and the studied specimens’ data are presented in Appendix 1, where the “Material examined” section includes the collecting data for each record: locality code, date and specimen(s) information. Information on the localities - name, Protected Area (when applicable), 10x10 Km UTM coordinates and Municipality - is presented in Table 1. Unless otherwise stated the specimens are currently deposited in SF’s collection.
Identification of specimens was based on ASKEW (1988) and AGUILAR
& DOMMANGET (1998).
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The data presented in Appendix 1 refers to a total of 506 specimens
collected in 60 localities distributed across continental Portugal (Table 1 and
Map 1) and 4 specimens collected in one locality in Madeira Island (Table
1). Fifteen of the 60 mainland localities are located in six Protected Areas,

Protected Areas are abbreviated as follows: PNDI (Douro Internacional Natural Park), PNM (Montesinho Natural Park), PNPG (Peneda-Gerês National Park), PNSAC (Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park), RNDJS (Dunas de São Jacinto Nature Reserve) and RNPA (Paúl de Arzila Nature Reserve).

four of which have their Odonata catalogues increased: six species new to Douro Internacional Natural Park (PNDI), three species new to Peneda-Gerês National Park (PNPG), two species new to Dunas de São Jacinto Nature Reserve (RNDSJ) and one species new to Paúl de Arzila Nature Reserve (RNPA). Furthermore, new information on species distribution is presented for Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park (PNSAC) and Montesinho Natural Park (PNM). The present records represent an extension to the north of the distributional range of Lestes virens, Erythromma viridulum, Brachythemis leucosticta, Orthetrum brunneum and Trithemis annulata.
Coenagrion mercuriale, which is considered vulnerable by the IUCN and is included in the Fauna-Flora-Habitat directive of the European Union (SAHLÉN et al., 2004) has been recorded recently from a small number of localities in the east and south of the country (JÖDICKE 1996; MALKMUS 1998, 2002; FERREIRA et al. 2005, 2006a, in prep.). The present record is the first for the coastal area since SEABRA (1939a, 1939b). In Europe, the major threats to this species, whose distribution and status is clearly insufficiently known in Portugal (VAN TOL & VERDONK 1988, GRAND 1996), are the drying of small streams and the intensification of agriculture leading to the decline of populations (SAHLÉN et al., 2004).
Another species worth mentioning is Aeshna affinis, which has only been recorded from two actual central Portuguese localities (Serra de Monfurado and Soure) by SEABRA (1939), lacking any other mention in subsequent publications. However, the presence of the species in the vicinity of the latter locality was confirmed in 1996 by David Chelmick (in litt.).
Furthermore, as indicated in WILLIAMS’ (1990) unpublished catalogue, a specimen labelled “Coimbra” exists in MZCP. The identity of this specimen, which lacks collecting date, was confirmed by us. In Spain, as in Portugal, there are few records of this species (OCHARAN 1987, CORDERO 1996, AZPILICUETA et al. submitted) indicating the need for further research on its status in the Iberian Peninsula.
Besides the data here presented, the collection includes a few specimens from Serra da Estrela Natural Park whose data will be included in a more comprehensive regional study (FERREIRA et al. in prep). The set also included the vouchers of the first Portuguese record of Zygonyx torridus (AGUIAR 1989), whose data are included in KUNZ et al. (2006).
