In fact, no thinker, as well as no scientist, ever elaborated their thought or systematized their scientific knowledge without having been problematized, challenged. Although this does not mean that every challenged man will become a philosopher or scientist, it means that challenge is fundamental to knowledge construction. (Paulo Freire, Extensão ou comunicação, 1992, p.54)

Exactly 15 years ago, in August 1997, Interface – Comunicação, Saúde, Educação presented Paulo Freire’s words, reproduced above, to introduce its first issue. That quotation contained the mark of the

problematization and challenge that have been accompanying us since the journal’s creation.

Reviewing that first presentation and, at the same time, making a self-criticism of the process of evolution the journal has undergone since its creation, it is possible to state that Interface has consolidated the initial idea of a moving project, inspired by Pierre Levy and Italo Calvino, in a conception of knowledge as an open, hypertextual, encyclopedia. Maintaining the thematic focus on the issues of education and communication in the health practices and in the questions of education and teaching at university, the journal has assumed as its permanent challenge the search for new interfaces, looking for implications among different discourses, bringing relations between text and text, text and image, image and image. The papers that compose the present issue of Interface express these articulations, including diverse themes like research and art in organs donation, cartographic research, questions of health discourse and practice, human sciences and health, among others.

It is important to highlight that, throughout these years, the journal’s editorial project has been

continually enhanced and renewed with new questionings and themes, at the same time that the adoption of quality criteria approved by the scientific community has amplified the scientific merit indicators and the journal’s visibility and credibility. It should be noted that the efforts undertaken to give a scientific and professional character to Interface have produced positive results, in terms of acquired indexations, resources obtained from different institutions - Kellogg Foundation, CNPq, CAPES, FAPESP, among others -, and also in terms of its evaluation in the different areas of its scope in CAPES, in the Qualis system, especially Education (Qualis A2), Public Health (Qualis B1) and Applied Social Sciences I (Qualis B1), and of the increasing demand for the journal as a space for the dissemination of scientific works by researchers from diverse regions and institutions, in Brazil and abroad. This interest is expressed by the fact that the journal started to be published on a quarterly basis in 2008, by the increasing volume of submitted papers (686 in 2010), and by the recent expansion in the number of papers published per issue, thus reducing the interval between submission and publication. Interface has also been performing a series of changes in its editorial process, like the pre-evaluation of the manuscripts, carried out by the editors and associate editors, and the immediate publication of papers approved in Biblioteca SciELo Brasil, already with doi number (ahead of print). With this purpose and also to better instruct the pre-evaluation process, since the beginning of 2011 Interface has been requiring that the authors indicate the originality of the manuscript in relation to what has already been produced in the national and international literature, as well as to previous publications of the research from which the submitted paper was generated. In an optional character, the authors can also suggest reviewers for their papers and point to possible conflicts of interest with other possible reviewers.

The concern about the rigor of the evaluation process has produced, as one of its consequences, a significant increase in the number of rejected papers which, in the last two years, amounted to more than 80% of the submitted articles. However, the increasing trend of the submissions has raised the editors’ concern about the scientific merit evaluation process, given the challenge of enhancing its quality and performing it promptly, in view of the difficulties identified in the model of peer review, by means of their participation, which should be marked by solidarity. One problem that is commonly faced by editors of different national journals refers to the difficulty in receiving the contributions of researchers who work as ad hoc reviewers.

Fortunately, the effort undertaken in these 15 years has also ensured positive results in different indicators present in the databases in which Interface is indexed. Looking at the frequency of received quotations in relation to the total of published papers in the last five years (2006-2010) in Biblioteca SciELO Brasil reveals that the journal presents a consistent growth, moving from 1.78 to 5.12 received quotations (on average) per published paper. Self-quotation is within adequate limits. The constant growth in authorships and co-authorships of published papers coming from other countries should also be highlighted.

In its 15th anniversary, Interface wishes to share with its readers and collaborators the satisfaction of having

arrived here contributing to this effort to amplify the access to this immaterial property that knowledge is. At the same time, we would like, in the next editorials, to stimulate debate and reflection on the problems and challenges that the national journals have been facing today to accomplish such a task.
