Epigenetic variation being more frequent, may allow to adjust rapidly and reversibly the expression pattern until the most adaptive epigenetic state becomes fully stabilized through DNA sequence changes (i.e. genetically assimilated)
~Would be a way to explore the expression landscape Evolutionary forces would favor the capacity to maintain increased epigenetic variability which could match
specific environmental alterations
LSG – 21% are likely to be under epigenetic control Conserved - 5.8%
->DMRs / variação epigenética, são herdadas de maneira estável e atuam como QTL epigenéticos independentemente de mudanças de seqüência de DNA

-> epialleles contribute to the heritability of complex traits and therefore provide a substrate on which Darwinian evolution may act
AND IN NATURE?
Genoma and Methylome for 152 accessions In total, 40,269 CG-DMRs (average size of 321 bp) enriched in gene bodies and depleted in transposons / 13,485 C-DMRs (average size of 221 bp) enrichment in transposons and depletion in genes (structural variations ~17% of the C-DMRs and linkage disequilibrium revealed that C-DMRs may be due, in part, to local genetic variants).
->Patterns of DNA methylation at regions within both genes and transposable elements vary extensively within and among natural Arabidopsis populations.
However, the potential effects of this epigenetic variation on fitness and local adaptation
remain unclear- Schmitz et al. 203Nature doi:10.1038/nature11968
About 30% (130) of the induced heritable DMRs that were identified in the epiRILs overlap with naturally occurring DMRs
