Walter

Greetings!
As you read this message, we would have celebrated the solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul on June 29th. Aside from being the feast of these very important Apostles in the life of the Faith and of the Church it is an important day in the life of the Church. It is on this day that the conferral of the Pallium is given to Archbishops of metropolitan sees, i.e. Boston, Hart-ford, New York, Lisbon, São Paulo, etc. The pallium dates back to the early church and was originally only worn by the Pope. Throughout history the Popes have, by virtue of extending some privileges to their deacons and bishops, granted the use of the pallium to others. It is a very simple garment, adorned with six crosses and pins, worn over the chasuble at the collar. It is a sharing in the fullness of the pontifical office as Bishops share in the collegiality with the Bishop of Rome. And you all know how important this coming Thursday is. It is the feast day of St. Elizabeth of Portugal. It is she to whom the Portuguese tradition of the “crownings” with the crown adorned with Holy Spirit is attributed. She was married to a des-potic king and yet she was able to bring children into the palace, seat them on the throne, give them her husband’s scepter and crown them with her crown. In doing this she was giving them a certain dignity not afforded children during that time. This practice also reminds us of the dignity given to us in Baptism when we are adopted by God into that royal family. St. Elizabeth is greatly known for her charity. The iconography associated with her is of a queen, holding an open apron filled with roses. She would often bring food to the poor and even to her husband’s prisoners in the palace jail. One day she was on her way to feed the poor and imprisoned and as she passed from the kitchen through the garden her husband stopped he to ask what she had in her apron. When she opened it to show him it was filled with roses instead of the bread with which would have fed the hungry. A significance of the rose in Christianity is of devotion. Its smell denotes sanctity. Certainly both of these can be attributed to Elizabeth of Portugal. She was as devoted to helping the poor as she was devoted to the Lord. Her sanctity is attested by being known as the peacemaker, bringing about peace between her husband and son. At the death of her husband, Dom Dinis in 1325 his son succeeded him as Afonso IV. St. Elizabeth then retired to a convent of Poor Clares which she had founded at Coimbra. There she took the Franciscan Tertiary habit, wishing to devote the rest of her life to the poor and sick in obscurity. Once more, in 1336, she was called to act as peacemaker. Afonso IV marched his troops against the King of Castile (Spain.) In spite of age and weakness, the holy queen insisted on hurrying to Estremoz, where the two king's armies were drawn up. She again stopped the fighting and caused terms of peace to be arranged. But the exertion brought on her final illness; and as soon as her mission was fulfilled she died of a fever, full of heavenly joy, and ex-horting her son to the love of holiness and peace. St. Elizabeth was buried at Coimbra, and miracles followed her death. She was canonized by Urban VIII in 1625, and her feast is kept on July 4th. She is the patron of Catholic charities.
Although in the past years, St. Elizabeth was more often than not forgotten on her own feast day, overshadowed by the great events of our own nation. But in the United States, he rfeast day has been moved to JULY 5th. It should never be forgotten or ignored that our own Azorean traditions of the “Coroações” and “sopas” come
from her act of benevolence in crowning the children and her generosity in feeding the
poor and hungry. Jesus quite clearly tells us: “the king will say to them in reply,
'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'” These words motivate the saints, like Elizabeth and others like her to desire to put others first, before themselves and their egos, and think of the Lord as they do for others. May our wonderful traditions of “crownings” and “sopas” be for us a mo-ment to reflect on what the Lord and our traditions require of us.
Of course more popular and more common to our traditions this week is the Fourth of
July. And it is indeed a very important celebration for us as a nation. We celebrate not
only our independence, but all that America is and can be. As we celebrate this signifi-cant day in our history let us pray that our nation always stand up for the ideals on which it was founded. That as those are named as life, liberty and the pursuit of
happi-ness, that it is our Creator who endows them upon us and upon all. Let us pray that one day all people may enjoy these, and that there will be a day that the peace of God will reign. God Bless America! Land that we LOVE! I wish you all a
great Fourth!
Peace & Blessings, Fr. Walter

We all have our disappointments in life. They can range from the inconsequential (the store is out of the brand of laundry soap that I have a coupon for) to the very signifi-cant (a diagnosis of cancer or another serious illness). And we all deal with disappointments in different ways. Young children are very good at "catastrophizing" a disappoint-ment. Mom's refusal to get that wanted candy bar in the grocery checkout line can lead to a tantrum. But as any mother knows, not giving in to a child's tantrum is teaching a lesson on how to deal with the inevitable disappointments that are part of each person's life.
In this weekend's Gospel, James and John certainly weren't happy that a Samaritan village was not very welcoming to Jesus and his band of disciples. Recall that Samaritans be-lieved that the place to worship God was on Mt. Gerizim, and because Jesus and his disciples were on the way to Jeru-salem, the Samaritans were not interested in aiding his mis-sion. Almost like five-year-olds at the candy display in the grocery checkout line, James and John were ready to call down fire from heaven to wipe out the Samaritans. Jesus did not hesitate to rebuke them for their outburst. On the other hand, even Jesus seemed to express his own sense of disap-pointment when he says in the Gospel to someone who wants to follow him, "The Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head" (Lk 9:58).
How we deal with disappointment is a sign of maturity. Je-sus makes the point in the Gospel that we have to move forward. Letting go of regrets and looking to the future is wholesome everyday advice. But putting those ideas into the realm of faith means that we confess our sins and seek abso-lution (the letting go) and direct our lives to God's kingdom. It is looking toward our ultimate future, which is eternal life in heaven.
