Procedure:

Ask students what human rights are and if they can list some of them. Write Human Rights on the board and elicit words students can relate to it. Draw it as a mind map. Tell them there’s a special date to celebrate it throughout the world: December 10 and discuss its importance.

• Divide students into groups of three or four members and give each group three words to come up with human rights using them.

• Ask students to read the human rights they put together to the classmates.

• Play the video 30 Statements of Human Rights – Rwanda

• Hand students the worksheets and ask them to match the columns in activity 1.

• Have them do activities 2 and 3. Correct 1, 2, 3.

• Ask students to read the sentences in activity 4 before you play the video. Play the video https://www.youtube.com/user/UNOHCHR (8’14’’, only up to 3’45’’. Accessed on 10/22/2014) and ask students to write True or False. Play it again if necessary. Play it one more time to correct the sentences.

Wrap up: encourage students to find out more about other Human Rights such as Children’s Rights, Disabled rights, etc. and bring information to the class.

Recently, Tanzania has witnessed a spate of brutal attacks and killings of people with albinism, linked to myths and witchcraft. In an effort to protect this vulnerable group, the East African nation has rounded up children with the condition in 13 centers throughout the country.

The Human Rights Office has voiced concern about the institutionalization and segregation of people with albinism in the centers. The UN Fund for Victims of Torture is supporting a local non-governmental organization to provide psychological and medical services to victims of attacks.
