The title of the podcast series is ''Travel Stories from China'', the first episode is called ''Hospitalized In The Mountains'' and the second episode is called ''Freaked Out By The Surveillance Cameras''. personal core-online journalism'' The field of study for this student was film and television studies.
Introduction to podcasting
After discussing the basics, this chapter takes a brief look at the history of podcasts. Finally, the discussion ends with how the tourism industry has benefited from podcasting and what types of podcasts exist in the tourism industry.
Brief history of podcasts
Podcasting as a term has become one of the most famous buzzwords in the media and technology sectors. The hype around Podcasting was questioned as it seemed to be just audio available online in the business world and it didn't seem to be a fresh new concept.
Structure of a podcast and tips for creating a show
Podcasts can be scripted or unscripted depending on the style and format of the podcast. The basic elements of each episode consist of the intro, main body and outro.
Podcast as a marketing tool
It's easier, faster and cheaper to produce audio ads for podcasts compared to other media channels. Several brands have chosen to create ads in just a few days for podcasts rather than spending several weeks producing TV campaigns.
Podcasts in tourism
The idea of the company is to document and help the travel industry by showing the changing behavior of travelers. The table presents the themes of the podcasts, as well as when the first episode and most recent episode were published, the average frequency of the release of an episode for the series, and the average length of each episode.
Introduction to experience economy
This dimension addresses what kind of relationship or connection the customer has with the performance or event. Aesthetic experiences involve clients in an activity or environment, but the client has a passive role in the situation.
Experiences are more valuable than possessions
The relationship between well-being and income shows that material possessions in today's society do not bring happiness to an individual. New material possessions are exciting to people, but as people adjust to their possessions, they find them unexciting.
Podcasts as value creators and experience providers
Taylor said that listening to podcasts is like listening to his characters during a casual conversation. Taylor (2015) also shows that he values the education he received from listening to podcasts. Taylor compares listening to thousands of hours of experts talking about their fields via podcasts to years of sitting through college.
He also mentions his business, which is several years ahead, as he has had the opportunity to learn from others and their mistakes by listening to podcasts.
Introduction to storytelling
The final theory researched introduces what storytelling is and why it is an important part of people's everyday lives. Information will be shared about how our brain functions when we hear a story and how to build a great story. This will be followed by a definition of personal narrative journalism and an examination of how it is used in podcasting.
Direct approaches cannot open people's minds to new possibilities as effectively as storytelling.
The science behind storytelling
As a story is being told, the narrator and the listener have the same brain activity going on. The body reacts the same way to hearing a good story as it does to falling in love. What happens is that the brain is flooded with hormones and neurotransmitters that hijack the motor cortex.
They have the ability to develop cells and tissues, they play an important role in growth, they initiate and sustain.
Ingredients for creating a story
The audience needs details of the events that are happening in the story in order to create an image in their minds, and the storyteller needs to create action to move the story along smoothly. The narrator must build and release tension, as well as constantly share unexpected events. This way the storyteller has the listener's attention and the listener will wonder what might happen next and they want to hear more of the story.
They allow the listener to understand what they encourage and value in their lives and what they don't.
Personal narrative journalism in podcasts
Headphones create a personal listening space between the listener and the storyteller, as they are unable to see each other. The following sections will explain how the creator of the podcast, the guest, and the listener all benefit from narrative podcasting. It can be quite difficult to get the listener to listen to the podcast episode until the end, since the voice in podcasts is the only stimuli and the technology for sound is quite narrow.
When the podcast listener presses the play button, the creator must prevent them from pressing stop by providing valuable content.
Storytelling as a way to increase value and grow a business or a brand
The narrator may even whisper to give an added effect of intimacy for the listener. Storytelling can cultivate the needed culture at work as it can be a way to share a successful vision, the history of the company and, for example, its goals and values. When employees feel they are part of the company's story and play an important role in it, they feel they have greater purpose and meaning as individuals.
First, the background investigation conducted at the beginning of the process is explained.
Background research
After the planning process, I will go through the execution process, which is followed by reflection, where I review my thoughts on how satisfied I was with the podcast series itself. During the second weekend I learned how to edit the podcast with a software called Reaper and also about the relevant marketing channels. I found out where I could find free music and sound effects for the editing process, where I could publish the podcast series, and where I could do it for free.
The podcast course was very efficient and provided the tools needed to start a podcast.
Planning process and timetable
In September 2020 and October 2020 I started doing my research into creating the podcast series. The theoretical framework was the basis for this project, which is why focusing so long on the upcoming process of creating the podcast helped. There were quite a lot of them so it was difficult to choose which one I would tell in the podcast.
I searched for sound effects for the episodes as well as music that fit the theme of the podcast.
Executing
- Creating the cover art
- Planning the structure of the episode, focus on storytelling
- Recording and editing the episodes
- Deciding on the name and publishing the episodes
Since this was my first attempt at making a short podcast series, I decided to script the episodes. The planning for the storytelling process began by following the three rules discussed in the theoretical framework David Phillips (2015) provided for avoiding ''The devil's cocktail''. The aim of the story was to create "The Angels cocktail" for the listener, a theory presented by Thomas Phillips in 2015.
When planning the episodes, one of my goals was to make the episodes entertaining and educational.
Sharing the episodes on social media and my future as a podcaster
In the table above is an overview of the tools I used to create podcast episodes. In Instagram it is only possible to add a link to bio, so I decided to put my soundcloud.com as it was more familiar as a medium for me to use. I made a post on LinkedIn about my podcast series to gain visibility on the labor market, which was one of my goals, as I mentioned in the introduction to the thesis.
In order to build an audience, it is important in the future to learn how to market the podcast accordingly.
Analysis of a podcast episode
I heavily edited the podcast episodes to strengthen the story which could be seen as sound effects and background music. In this way I created dopamine in the listener, which is one of the hormones in "The Angels Cocktail" for increasing motivation and focus, as well as increasing memory within a listener (Phillips 2015). To create a stronger image, I use a soundscape in the background as I explain about the destination.
It paints the picture for the listener that the destination is in nature in the mountains.
Reflection
The goal of this product-based thesis was to create a two-part travel-themed podcast series. I learned how to create a series of podcasts and how to use different equipment and tools to create episodes. The thesis can be used by tourism students as an example of how to create podcast episodes.
During this editing process I figured out how to find free sound effects and music from the internet and add and edit them to the sound I had created.
Own learning
The story in the podcast was a seamless way to delve deeper into the topic covered in the episode. I was very happy with the cover I created for the podcast as I think it conveyed the theme and vibe of the podcast very well to potential listeners. I really enjoyed the process of creating podcast episodes, even though it felt quite stressful and even scary at times.
