Creating a website for an AV production company

In addition to revamping the website, the Commissioner wanted an online photo and video gallery for the company. The main part of the development task was building the website for JPS Production according to the designer's plans and the client's wishes, using the chosen tool. Upon completion of the website, it had to be transferred to a server under the company's domain, jpsproduction.net.

The second part of the development task was to create an online photo and video gallery for the company's purposes. The appearance of the website is very close to the original plan and all original requirements were met. In this part of the project, I decided to use an open-source online gallery creation system called Gallery.

I chose this tool because I have used it before and it meets the commissioner's wishes. The web address of the main page is usually considered the address of the website.

It also contains many useful features that can be used in content management of a website. There are hundreds of plug-ins that can be used to extend the use of WordPress, and users are free to modify the code to make it even more flexible. Joomla is free software, so it can be freely used, copied or modified by anyone.

With Joomla, the coding can be a bit inflexible with the core "backbone" present. In addition, it can be difficult for a web development beginner to integrate the software. The same template can be used for the entire website, or different templates can be applied to different parts of the site.

System Features: Joomla has many system features that can be valuable to a website administrator. This ensures that Drupal is always modern and that the quality and usability are optimal. Screenshots of the administration panels of each web publishing system can be found in APPENDIX 1.

It's good for people who are more advanced in web development, but can be very difficult for novice developers.

I still plan to leave the home page of the site to be similar to a blog because it is useful as a news page, but it just needs a few changes so it won't look like a blog anymore . The navigation bar will be in the upper part of the page, below the header photo. In fact, it was the default theme of the latest version of WordPress, called Twenty Eleven (see FIGURE 4).

Since the Twenty Eleven theme is still quite radically different from the design of the JPS Production website, it was clear that a lot of tweaking was needed. Any code generated in the child theme's files overrides the corresponding lines in the parent theme. All changes in the child theme files are applied to the website.

After tweaking the look of the chosen theme to make it look just right, some plug-ins were needed to get everything working properly. Each plug-in had its own page on the WordPress site, including descriptions of that plug-in's features and reviews from its users. I needed this because two of the pages on the site are supposed to be displayed on the sidebar instead of the navigation menu.

When I added the link to the sidebar of the site, I ran into a surprising problem. I am quite satisfied with the appearance and functioning of the website after the work is finished. The home page of the site (see FIGURE 7) is very similar to the original design with a few small differences.

I also want to include an example of the other pages as the structure is a bit different there. This was not part of the original plan, but later done according to the wishes of the client. Some parts of the website will of course have to be updated by the commissioner himself as I can't always be there to update it.

Installation

These steps include the authentication phase, where you need to create a text file with random characters specified by the installer and move it to the server. This gives the system proof that you have access to the server you are trying to use. After this phase, for example, there is the system check, choosing the installation type, creating the administrator and choosing the features of Gallery 2 you want to use.

The appearance

Although the commissioner said the gallery doesn't have to match the look of the site, I thought some similarities would look good. I thought it would be nice if people could associate some nice colors or other factors of appearance with the company. With this in mind, I ended up using the same background colors and some of the same fonts as I did with the website.

I didn't want to make any big changes to the layout because I thought it was already pleasing to the eye. To see what the gallery would look like in real use, I added a few albums and a few pictures in each.

A good idea for future development would be to modify the site so that it works well at least with the most commonly used web browsing devices. Translations: At this point, the website has a page where all the text is in English; otherwise the site is entirely Finnish. It might be a good idea to consider making the entire site available in different languages.

In any case, an English version would be very useful for any foreign visitors to the site, but a Swedish version, for example, would also be useful for a Finnish company. This requires someone who translates the texts on the site and implements the different language versions.

APPENDICES

Here is the manual I wrote for the commissioner to make it easier to update some parts of the website. The manual is written in Finnish, so the commissioner will find it easier to understand.
