The typical genre of seventeenth-century Venetian sculpture, favoured by contemporary collectors and customers, is embodied by marble busts depicting ancient philosophers, prophets, and apostles. Several sculptor workshops, that of Giusto Le Court, Orazio Marinali, Michele Fabris, andGiovanni Bonazza, created decorative pieces in a similar manner. The Budapest copy has a distinctive design, such as the head tilted to the side, the Oriental headscarf, the half-open mouth, the distant gaze, and the lively shaped beard leaning to the side. It resembles the busts created by Giuseppe Torretti (e.g., Boston, Museum of Fine Arts), a master who was mainly active in Venice.
