An analysis of the coverage of economic migration of Poles in the British press was presented in NEXT STOPSKI LONDON. In the analysis of the study, the perception of the effects of Polish migration and the perception of the brand of Poland were also discussed. In addition, we attempt to shed light on the history and position of Poles in the UK, as well as discuss public perceptions of immigration in general and the debate over opening up the UK labor market to Poles.
The perception of Poland's internal situation and its position in the international arena is one of the main areas of our research. The EU's adoption of the Eastern Partnership should be counted among Poland's major achievements in the European arena. Poland was also one of the last countries to ratify the Treaty of Lisbon, which caused so much controversy in Britain.
Poland's EU accession and the opening of the British labor market to Poles have played a decisive role in how Poland and Poles are perceived. In the mid-1990s, only 5% of the public considered immigration to be a major challenge facing British society.37. According to the organizers, diversity and cooperation should be the hallmark of the initiative.
In our study, we estimate what proportion of the British public actually participated in Polska.
Results of quantitative analysis
Moreover, over half of the interviewees declare that they have already had some form of contact with Poland and the Poles (Fig. 1). The workplace is a frequent site of contact between Poles and Britons; this was the case for half of the interviewees who had contact with Poland and Poles. This may be due to the fact that Polish workers can be found practically in the entire labor market.
One of the basic aspects of a country's image is how it is perceived in terms of size. Only 40% of the British public knew that Slovakia was an EU member; which is more, 15%. At the same time, 28% of respondents were convinced that Ukraine is also a member of the EU (Fig. 4).
From the following list of countries, please tell me which countries are members of the European Union. Very often, when the consequences of the EU enlargement in 2004 and the opening of the British labor market to the citizens of the new member states are discussed, Poland and Poles are mentioned (Fomina, Frelak, 2008). These factors have been largely responsible for shaping the British public's awareness of Poland's EU membership.
Most likely, reports by the BBC and other mass media about the Polish-Russian reconciliation in the wake of the Smolensk disaster played a role in this. More than half of respondents agreed that Poles fit in well or very well in British society. This is a significant result considering the generally skeptical attitude of the British towards immigration.
The respondents' assessment of the consequences of the opening of the British labor market for citizens from the new member states and the resulting arrival of Polish workers in Great Britain is not unanimous. Almost 50% of respondents are aware of the positive impact of Polish immigrants on British economic growth and increased tax revenues. Poles to obtain British citizenship Pole for the director of the company you work for.
It is not surprising that knowledge of Polish products increases as knowledge of Poles increases: a third of respondents who have had previous contacts with Poles and Poles claim to be familiar with Polish products.
