Direnis Erdinc was born in Tunceli, Turkey. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, Turkey. Later, she earned her master´s degree in Earth System Science Programme in METU. As a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow, Direnis has carried out her PhD studies in the field of human mitochondrial DNA at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
