Cymbopogon martinii, mais conhecido como palmarosa, é uma planta perene nativa da Índia, que pertence a família Poaceae. A maioria das espécies pertencentes a este gênero possui óleo essencial com características aromáticas, tendo importância comercial nas indústrias de cosméticos, perfumaria e em aplicações farmacêuticas. O óleo essencial de palmarosa tem como principais componentes químicos o (E)-β-ocimeno, linalol, geraniol, acetato de geranila e β-cariofileno. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do horário de colheita no teor, no rendimento e na composição química do óleo essencial de diferentes partes vegetais de dois genótipos de palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii). O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Experimental "Campus Rural da UFS" localizado em São Cristóvão-SE cujo delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 2x3x3, com três repetições. Foram avaliados os genótipos UFS-CMA001 e UFS-CMA002. Verificou-se maior rendimento de óleo essencial no genótipo UFS-CMA002, no entanto, os dois genótipos apresentaram alto teor de geraniol. Além disso, observou-se que a colheita dos dois genótipos pode ser realizada tanto pela manhã quanto a tarde.

Mentha piperita, Cymbopogon martinii and Cymbopogon schoenanthus essential oils were chosen to be evaluated against nematodes in in vitro tests because they have shown some insecticide effect. In vitro bioassays have the advantage of providing a simple, rapid, and inexpensive means of primary screening of products with anthelmintic potential. M. piperita essential oil was active in killing insects of stored products (Shaaya et al., 1991), and had larvicidal and mosquito-repellency activity (Ansari et al., 2000). C. martini essential oil was active against Meloidog- yne incognita, a soil nematode, (Pandey et al., 2000), and against Caenorhabditis elegans (Kumaran et al., 2003). C. schoenanthus essential oil was active against termites (Koba et al., 2007) and against the bruchid Callosobruchus macu- latus, which is a major pest of stored grains (Ketoh et al., 2002).

Essential oils are secondary metabolites of plants, through their odor has the ability to repel predatory animals or attract pollinating insects. Due to its chemical composition, it is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry and food industry for its antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties, in the cosmetics industry for its fragrance in the development of perfumes. The dynamic cosmetics market requires the development of new products, but must be fast and safe. And as for the safety aspect, there is a growing interest in natural products, since they offer a proposal of synergy between vegetable and skin care. Essential oils of geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) and palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii), are recognized for their antioxidant activities, such benefit is used in cosmetics of a variety of purposes, from moisturizers to sunscreens. The objective of this work was to develop an O / O emulsion associated with geranium essential oil (Pelargonium graveolens) and essential oil of palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii). Four formulations were developed and subjected to preliminary stability assessment and accel- erated stability tests. The results obtained over a period of 30 days were that all formulations remained within the criteria of pH values and organoleptic characteristics. The developed formulations presented satisfactory physi- co-chemical characteristics in accordance with the determinations required for the regulation of cosmetic products.

he efects of the inhalation of Cymbopogon martinii essential oil (EO) and geraniol on Wistar rats were evaluated for biochemical parameters and hepatic oxidative stress. Wistar rats were divided into three groups (� = 8): G1 was control group, treated with saline solution; G2 received geraniol; and G3 received C. martinii EO by inhalation during 30 days. No signiicant diferences were observed in glycemia and triacylglycerol levels; G2 and G3 decreased (� < 0.05) total cholesterol level. here were no diferences in serum protein, urea, aspartate aminotransferase activity, and total hepatic protein. Creatinine levels increased in G2 but decreased in G3. Alanine aminotransferase activity and lipid hydroperoxide were higher in G2 than in G3. Catalase and superoxide dismutase activities were higher in G3. C. martinii EO and geraniol increased glutathione peroxidase. Oxidative stress caused by geraniol may have triggered some degree of hepatic toxicity, as veriied by the increase in serum creatinine and alanine aminotransferase. herefore, the beneicial efects of EO on oxidative stress can prevent the toxicity in the liver. his proves possible interactions between geraniol and numerous chemical compounds present in C. martinii EO.

O óleo essencial da planta Cymbopogon martinii, popularmente conhecida como palmarosa, é largamente utilizado pela indústria de perfumaria como uma fonte de geraniol (MALLAVARAPU et al., 1998), que é um monoterpenóide e um álcool, com um odor muito semelhante ao da rosa. Este odor, apesar de agradável ao olfato humano, é considerado repelente de insetos, como por exemplo, do Anopheles culicifacies, mosquito vetor da malária (ANSARI; RAZDAN, 1995). O óleo de palmarosa, além de repelente, possui ação antifúngica contra Aspergillus niger, Penicillium funiculosum (DELESPAUL et al., 2000) e Phaeoisariopsis griseola (HOYOS et al., 2012), porém sua influência sobre fitobactérias e sobre ativação de mecanismos de defesa de plantas ainda não foi estudado.

The bees Apis mellifera are one of great economic and ecological importance because they are efficient pollinators in natural and agricultural environments. The recent decline of bee colonies around the world has been attributed to several causes, including the use of neonicotinoid insecticides. Despite this, the use of these products has increased in recent decades on a global scale. In an attempt to evaluate an alternative to the use of neonicotinoids, in this work we analyzed the effects of the essential oil of Cymbopogon martinii and its major compound on Apis mellifera bees. For this, the bees were exposed, by contact and ingestion, to C. martinii essential oil, geraniol and commercial insecticide imidacloprid, in order to evaluate the toxicity, behavioral and locomotion effects of bees treated with these compounds. The tests were conducted in the laboratory using individuals from A. mellifera. Our results showed that the highest toxicity occurs through the ingestion route and the imidacloprid causes higher mortality to the bees than the other treatments. Although there was no behavioral change (individual and collective) among individuals of the colonies, there was a significant reduction in the locomotion capacity of bees treated with imidacloprid. On the other hand, the bioinsecticides tested did not cause changes in the locomotion of the bees. Thus, our results corroborate the undesirable effects of imidacloprid already reported in the literature, and, above all, it points out the absence of sublethal effects of the essential oil of C.

In view of the increase in bacterial resistance, alternative therapies have been studied, among which stands out the use of natural products. Chitosan is a natural biopolymer that has biocompatibility and known antimicrobial action. Furthermore, studies are being carried out using essential oils that are used in folk medicine with a widespread application. Essential oils have various biological activities such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory-regenerative, moisturizing, anthelmintic among many other actions. Cymbopogon martinii (CM) is a family of herbaceous grasses that it is extracted from the oil popularly known as Palmarosa which has antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of chitosan gel enriched with essential oil of Cymbopogon martini. The chitosan high and low molecular weight (CHL), purchased from Sigma®, were mixed 1: 1 and diluted in 1% acetic acid to obtain a solution of 10mg / ml of polymer. The chitosan obtained was characterized about the structural characteristics, deacetylation degree and molecular weight, respectively, by techniques of IR spectrophotometry, nuclear magnetic resonance of hydrogen and viscosity. Chitosan has the characteristic functional groups of the polymer, degree of deacetylation of 80.66% and molecular weight of 6.03 x 10 4 g / mol. E ssential oil of Cymbopogon martinii was purchased from Ferquima®, which released its chemical composition, which has as the predominant compound Geraniol (81.8%). The antimicrobial activity of the CHL, the EOCM and CHL + EOCM association was determined by the microdilution technique, obtaining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) and Minimum Bactericia (MBC) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Desenvolvimento de formas farmacêuticas semissólidas a partir de capim-limão (Cymbopogon citratus)

O cultivo de Cymbopogon citratus é relativamente simples, pois se trata de uma espécie muito resistente às variações de solo e clima. Santos et al. (2009) observaram que solos argilosos ou sílico-argilosos são os que oferecem melhores condições para seu desenvolvimento. As condições climáticas ideais para seu desenvolvimento são calor e clima úmido, com plena exposição solar e chuvas uniformemente distribuídas. Ainda, foi relatado pelos mesmos autores que a planta obtida nos períodos do ano com maior índice pluviométrico e temperatura resultou em maior rendimento do óleo essencial, quando comparado com as demais épocas do ano.

Efeito antimicrobiano e citotóxico do óleo essencial de Cymbopogon citratus sobre células odontoblastóides

Diante da análise estatística dos resultados do teste microbio- lógico observou-se que a clorexidina 0,2% apresentou efeito ini- bitório para todas as cepas. Comparativamente, o óleo essencial de Cymbopogon citratus, em todas as concentrações, foi capaz de inibir o crescimento da Candida albicans (C.a) de maneira dose- dependente. As concentrações do óleo essencial 0,2% e 0,1% não obtiveram diferença estatística, além disso, se mostrou inferior à inibição obtida pela Clorexidina (Chx), álcool de cereais (Ac) e óleo a 1%. A ação de inibição deste fungo seria de extrema importância, pois a C.a. está presente na cavidade bucal de 65% dos usuários de prótese total, sendo que este é um fungo natural e ao mesmo tempo oportunista, pois a redução da imunidade do hospedeiro pode fazer com que a C.a. se torne patológica para a mucosa bucal 31-32 .

Efeito do óleo de capim limão (Cymbopogon flexuosus Stapf) no controle do carrapato dos bovinos.

RESUMO: Esta pesquisa foi conduzida com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito in vitro e in vivo do óleo essencial de capim limão ( Cymbopogon lexuosus Stapf) sobre o carrapato dos bovinos [Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus]. Na experimentação in vitro foi utilizado o grupo controle negativo e oito concentrações do óleo de capim-limão (0,5; 1; 2; 5; 10; 20; 50; 100%), em fêmeas ingurgitadas do carrapato. A eicácia de controle foi de 0; 20; 39; 99,5; 100; 100; 100; 100 e 100%, respectivamente. Para a experimentação in vivo foram constituídos três grupos (controle negativo, óleo de capim limão a 2,0% - nível estimado mediante análise de regressão, correspondendo a 95% de eicácia de controle do carrapato da pesquisa in vitro e amitraz a 0,025%), com dezoito vacas da raça Holandesa. Antes (média dos dias -3, -2, -1) e após a aplicação do produto (1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14 e 21 dias), foram contadas fêmeas ingurgitadas do carrapato. A eicácia de controle foi de 0; 54 e 74,5%, respectivamente, 21dias após o tratamento. Após a aplicação dos tratamentos (controle negativo x tratamento itoterápico), foram avaliadas as variáveis isiológicas: frequência cardíaca, respiratória, temperatura do globo ocular e temperatura da pele; os resultados foram similares entre os tratamentos.

Estudo da ação ansiolítica e sedativa de preparações obtidas de Cymbopogon citratus (D.C.) Stapf

Tea obtained from leaves of Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf is used for its anxiolytic, hypnotic and anticonvulsant properties in Brazilian folk medicine. Essential oil (EO) from fresh leaves was obtained by hydrodistillation and orally administered to Swiss male mice 30 minutes before experimental procedures. EO at 0.5 or 1.0 g/kg was evaluated for sedative/hypnotic activity through pentobarbital sleeping time, anxiolytic activity by elevated plus maze and light/dark box procedures and anticonvulsant activity through seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole and maximal electroshock. EO was effective in increasing the sleeping time, the percentage of entries and time spent in the open arms of the elevated plus maze as well as the time spent in the light compartment of light/dark box. In addition, EO delayed clonic seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole and blocked tonic extensions induced by maximal electroshock, indicating the elevation of the seizure threshold and/or blockage of seizures spread. These effects were observed in the absence of motor impairment evaluated on the rotarod and open field test. Our results are in accord with the ethnopharmacological use of Cymbopogon citratus, and after complementary toxicological studies it can support investigations assessing their use as anxiolytic, sedative or anticonvulsive agent.

Abstract. Orabi SA, Talaat IM, Balbaa LK, Abdalla AE. 2015. Influence of pyridoxine and spermine on lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) plants. Nusantara Bioscience 7: 139-143. Two pot experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of pyridoxine and spermine (each at 50, 100 and 200 mg/L) on plant growth, essential oil yield and its main constituents. All treatments significantly promoted plant height, fresh and dry mass (g/plant) of Cymbopogon citratus L., especially 100 mg/L spermine which mostly recorded the highest increments in total nitrogen, total phosphorous and total potassium mainly in the second cut, followed by 200 mg/L pyridoxine. Total phenols, essential oil % and oil yield recorded the maximum increments with spermine treatments followed by pyridoxine. Treatment of lemongrass plants with 100 mg/L spermine gave the highest relative percentage of citronellol (51.20%). Oxygenated compounds recorded the highest value (89.70%) with 200 mg/L spermine treatment, while the maximum non-oxygenated ones resulted from the untreated plants (13.65%). All treatments under study significantly affected the scavenging ability of the natural antioxidants of the plant extract towards the stable free radical DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate). Application of spermine at the concentration of 100 mg/L recorded the highest increment in phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) enzyme activity (µg/g F.wt.).

infections in patients with any type of deficiency of the immune system. The essential oils have been tested for antimycotic activity and pose much potential as antifungal agents. This work investigated the activity of the essential oil of Cymbopogon winterianus against C. albicans by MIC, MFC and time-kill methods. The essential oil (EO) was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus. It was tested fifteen strains of C. albicans. The MIC was determined by the microdilution method and the MFC was determined when an aliquot of the broth microdilution was cultivated in SDA medium. The phytochemical analysis of EO showed presence of citronellal (23,59%), geraniol (18,81%) and citronellol (11,74%). The EO showed antifungal activity, and the concentrations 625 µg/mL and 1250 µg/mL inhibited the growth of all strains tested and it was fungicidal, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of various concentrations of EO was analyzed over time, it was found concentration-dependent antifungal activity, whose behavior was similar to amphotericin B and nystatin.

As ações fungicida, antibacteriana e anti-inflamatória são propriedades importantes que vêm sendo investigadas em espécies medicinais. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi o de avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana do óleo essencial de Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf. (capim-limão) sobre cepas de Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus mutans e Candida spp. em crescimento planctônico e em biofilme. Para estudo dos micro-organismos em crescimento planctônico foram determinadas a Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM) e a Concentração Microbicida Mínima (CBM) de 9 cepas clínicas e, para cada espécie, uma ATCC (American Type Culture Collection) de: C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata, S. aureus, S. epidermidis e S. mutans. Para a avaliação dos efeitos dos óleos essenciais em biofilme foram utilizadas cepas padrão de S. aureus (ATCC 6538), S. mutans (ATCC 35688) e C. albicans (ATCC 18804). O biofilme foi formado em corpos-de-prova de resina acrílica com os micro-organismos isolados ou em associações. O número de unidades formadoras de colônias obtidas em cada biofilme (UFC/ mL) foi submetido ao teste t de Student. Os resultados demonstraram que o óleo essencial de Cymbopogon citratus apresentou atividade microbiostática e microbicida para todas as cepas analisadas. As médias de UFC/ml para o biofilme de S. aureus, S. mutans e C. albicans, isolados ou associados, foram menores no grupo tratado com óleo essencial em relação ao grupo controle.

Cytotoxicity and antiviral activity evaluation of Cymbopogon spp hydroethanolic extracts

Although other authors use different measures to estimate the cytotoxic values of their extracts, it is possible to infer the toxicity of these extracts for comparison. El- Nabi, El-Garawani and El-Berry (2016) used aqueous CC extract sand determined the CC 50 at 630 μg/mL applying the NR assay to hepatocarcinoma cells (HepG2). In addition, CN fractions extracted with hexane presented CC 50 of 469 μg/mL (Abdibah, Nazlina, Ahmad, 2010), whereas CC fractions using the same solvent presented CC 50 300 μg/mL (Nurul Aini et al., 2006), using both the MTT protocol and VERO cells. No reports of cytotoxicity for hydroethanolic extracts of the Cymbopogon species tested herein were reported, but it is possible to infer that the compounds extracted by hexane presented higher toxicity. The monoterpene citral is the major constituent of the essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus, medicinal plant popularly known as “capim-limão” or “capim-santo”, widely used to treat hypertension. This study evaluated the cardiovascular effects induced by the citral in normotensive rats by using in vivo and in vitro approaches. In non-anaesthetized rats, citral (1, 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg, i.v.) induced transient hypotension and bradycardia. Both effects were significantly attenuated by the pre-treatment with atropine (2 mg/kg, i.v.), hexamethonium (20 mg/kg, i.v.), sodium thiopental (45 mg/kg; i.p.) or indomethacin (5 mg/kg, i.v.) after dose of 5 mg/kg of the citral. After pre-treatment with L-NAME (20 mg/kg, i.v.), hypotension was significantly attenuated, while bradycardia was not altered. Furthermore, electrocardiogram records demonstrated that citral (10 and 20 mg/kg) was also able to induce sinoatrial block, which was reverted by atropine (2 mg/kg). In rings of rat mesenteric artery pre-contracted with phenylephrine (10 µM), citral (10 -5 - 10 -2 M) was able to induce relaxations (pD 2 = 2.52

Among the EOs that have been in great demand throughout the world is the EO of the leaves of Cymbopogon flexuosus (lemongrass of East India or lemongrass). This fact, due to its varied range of applications in different types of industries, stands out for its lemon flavor of food and beverages, where it is used as a medicinal, condimental and/or preservative agent (Kumar et al., 2009). The objective of this study was to characterize the chemical constitution, antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of EO obtained from leaves of Cymbopogon flexuosus.
