End-to-end multi-level dialog act recognition

End-to-end multi-level dialog act recognition

Similarly to the studies on English data, the first studies on the DIHANA corpus employed HMMs using both prosodic [10] and textual [11] features. The study using prosodic features fo- cused on the prediction of the generic top level labels, while the study using textual features considered the combination of the multiple levels. Additionally, the latter study, as well as a more recent one [12], explored the recognition of dialog acts on un- segmented turns using n-gram transducers. However, in those cases, the focus was on the segmentation process. The results of the HMM-based approaches were surpassed in a study that applied SVMs [13] to a feature set consisting of word n-grams, the presence of wh-words and punctuation, and context infor- mation from up to three preceding segments in the form of the same features. All of these studies neglected the multi-label na- ture of the bottom levels of the dialog act annotation scheme of the DIHANA corpus and approached a simplified single-label problem in which the label set consisted of the label combina- tions present in the corpus. However, this approach limits the possible combinations to those existing in the dataset and ne- glects the distinguishing characteristics of each individual label. Contrarily to those studies, in [3] we explored each level in- dependently, approaching the bottom levels as multi-label clas- sification problems, and then combined the best classifiers for each level hierarchically. In that study we compared those that were the two top performing DNN-based approaches on seg- ment representation for dialog act recognition on the Switch- board Dialog Act Corpus [14], which is the most explored cor- IberSPEECH 2018

Deep dialog act recognition using multiple token, segment, and context information representations

Deep dialog act recognition using multiple token, segment, and context information representations

Concerning context information, we focused on that provided by preceding segments, since those are the ones available to a dialog system attempting to identify its conversational partner’s intention. Previous dialog act recognition studies have shown that the best way to represent relevant context information from preceding segments is in the form of their clas- sifications and not their words. However, in those studies, the sequentiality of the preceding segments, which is one of their main characteristics, was not appropriately represented. We approached this gap by reducing the representation of information from preceding segments to a summary of the sequence of their classifications, generated by a recurrent approach. This approach is able to capture not only information concerning sequentiality, but also relevant information from distant segments, as shown by the performance improvements in relation to when only considering the classification of three preceding segments and the flat- tened dialog history. However, the performance gains when using this context information are higher when predicting the labels of SwDA than when predicting those of MRDA, since the latter are less ambiguous. Additionally, on SwDA, the difference between the upper bound of this approach, achieved when using the gold standard annotations, and the real performance, achieved when using the classifications predicted by the classifier itself was of 1.38 percentage points. This value is lower than those observed in previous studies (Ribeiro et al., 2015; Liu et al., 2017), which proves the better performance of the base classifier.

A multilingual and multidomain study on dialog act recognition using character-level tokenization

A multilingual and multidomain study on dialog act recognition using character-level tokenization

Abstract: Automatic dialog act recognition is an important step for dialog systems since it reveals the intention behind the words uttered by its conversational partners. Although most approaches on the task use word-level tokenization, there is information at the sub-word level that is related to the function of the words and, consequently, their intention. Thus, in this study, we explored the use of character-level tokenization to capture that information. We explored the use of multiple character windows of different sizes to capture morphological aspects, such as affixes and lemmas, as well as inter-word information. Furthermore, we assessed the importance of punctuation and capitalization for the task. To broaden the conclusions of our study, we performed experiments on dialogs in three languages—English, Spanish, and German—which have different morphological characteristics. Furthermore, the dialogs cover multiple domains and are annotated with both domain-dependent and domain-independent dialog act labels. The achieved results not only show that the character-level approach leads to similar or better performance than the state-of-the-art word-level approaches on the task, but also that both approaches are able to capture complementary information. Thus, the best results are achieved by combining tokenization at both levels.

Multimodal emotion recognition

Multimodal emotion recognition

A system with the capability of recognizing and understanding emotions, via the recognition of facial expressions or though the recognition of emotional speech, in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) process, would facilitate the interaction with users: it should be able to “perceive, interpret, express and regulate emotions” [5]. Recognizing the user’s emotional state is thus “one of the main requirements for computers to successfully interact with humans” [6]. It would enable also “differentiating between satisfaction and dissatisfaction of the user in a given computer- aided task” [7]. The range of potential applications is vast: “emotion and paralinguistic communication, clinical psychology, psychiatry, neurology, pain assessment, lie detection, intelligent environments” [7]. For example, an affective system could “calm a crying child or prevent strong feeling of loneliness and negative emotions”[8] and an emotion recognition system could be used to help “autistic children to learn and elicit emotional responses and could also help autistic children learn how to distinguish between emotions”[9].

Dialog dan Toleransi Beragama di Kota Ambon: Perspektif Bekas Pejuang Muslim Ambon

Dialog dan Toleransi Beragama di Kota Ambon: Perspektif Bekas Pejuang Muslim Ambon

Subsequent to piece declaration of Malino II in 2002, it was claimed that Maluku may sustain its peace in a much longer time. A numerous attempts on establishing harmonious dialogues between religions and the combatant leaders have also been initiated. Yet, the conflicts could never stop to occur. At the present time, supported with the mission of pluralism and multiculturalism, the efforts to generate interreligious dialogs continue to commence, despite the strong confrontation from the Muslim ex-combatants who believed that these efforts might originate new conflicts. This writing is made based on the result of a phenomenological study on the daily life of Muslim ex-combatants in Ambon city. The findings has shown that the ex-combatants had proposed a typical and unique design of dialog. In fact, the tolerance was a sort of "multiple tolerance", which has a closer connotation to the concept of tolerance (tasamuh) in Islam - to the extent of displaying the act of receiving and forgiving without losing the sense of being cautious and conscious toward non-Muslim individuals. This embed mental state is set due to the past conflict which leaves a traumatic wound and excessive prejudices toward the non-Muslim community. However, in daily life, the Muslim ex-combatants still demonstrate an open and sincere conducts toward the non-Muslims-socialize and mingle with all. The Muslim ex- combatants have proven themselves to be an important role in taking part of the peace process in Maluku. The proposed dialogue and tolerance are designated for mutual tranquility and prosperity, with the basis of Islamic fundamental values.

Pattern recognition and simulation in ecology

Pattern recognition and simulation in ecology

To further understand how ecological mechanisms and processes work, computer simulations are commonly used for addressing questions that cannot be solely answered by controlled experiments or observations. Especially, with the rapid advance of computational power during the past few decades, it is possible now to simulate more complicated ecological systems with explicit details, implementing individual level interactions and spatial structures. With intensive simulations, the relationships between biological processes, the environment, and ecological patterns across different scales can be revealed. Computer based ecological models can further predict the future of evolution (Zhang et al., 2013; Landi et al., 2015). Developing, optimizing, and applying computer simulations for ecological modeling have become the central task for computational ecology (Zhang, 2012). To this end, pattern recognition is a key procedure for evaluating ecological simulations, as the congruence between the simulated and observed patterns is the main criterion for model performance evaluation.

Automatic human activity segmentation and labeling in RGBD videos

Automatic human activity segmentation and labeling in RGBD videos

Abstract. Human activity recognition has become one of the most active re- search topics in image processing and pattern recognition. Manual analysis of video is labour intensive, fatiguing, and error prone. Solving the problem of rec- ognizing human activities from video can lead to improvements in several appli- cation fields like surveillance systems, human computer interfaces, sports video analysis, digital shopping assistants, video retrieval, gaming and health-care. This paper aims to recognize an action performed in a sequence of continuous actions recorded with a Kinect sensor based on the information about the position of the main skeleton joints. The typical approach is to use manually labeled data to perform supervised training. In this paper we propose a method to perform auto- matic temporal segmentation in order to separate the sequence in a set of actions. By measuring the amount of movement that occurs in each joint of the skele- ton we are able to find temporal segments that represent the singular actions. We also proposed an automatic labeling method of human actions using a clustering algorithm on a subset of the available features.
