THE ETHICAL DIMENSION OF INFORMATION LITERACY OF LIBRARIANS FROM THE FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF SANTA CATARINA

THE ETHICAL DIMENSION OF INFORMATION LITERACY OF LIBRARIANS FROM THE FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF SANTA CATARINA

Information Literacy of the librarians from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Santa Catarina (IFSC). In order to accomplish this, we seek to characterize the Ethical Dimension from literature from the areas of Information Science and Philosophy and to describe this dimension based on the narratives from the librarians. It has been adopted a treatment and qualitative analysis approach. In order to understand the Ethical Dimension of the Information Literacy, narrative interviews will be done with IFSC librarians and analyzed based on the Sander's phenomenological method (1982). The preliminary results show that the Ethical Dimension relates to human action, based on principles of good conduct for the orientation of individuals. This dimension permeates the other Information Literacy dimensions for guiding the action, the making of the information professional. The Ethical Dimension of Information Literacy involves the following elements: the ethical and legal use of information (issues related to intellectual property, copyright, author rights and plagiarism); ethical principles (respect, justice, solidarity, commitment); and critical reflection from the librarian on the action, aiming for the common good of individuals.

Análise da gestão ambiental nos institutos federais de educação, ciência e tecnologiaAnalisis of environmental management in federal institute of education, science and technology.

ABSTRACT: The main objective was to analysis the environmental profile of the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology (IF), when analyzing the environmental management practices. To achieve this goal was developed through an interview questionnaire which was answered by 230 Campuses in Brazil, in order to diagnose environmental management practices in this sector. Based on the assessment of the degree of implantation of certain aspects and environmental management practices was traced the environmental profile of the IF. The environmental management practices are the means by which organizations can improve their performance. An eco-efficient use of resources prevents waste generation and enables significant savings. An adequate environmental performance avoids costs resulting from the application of the polluter-pays principle. This work provided a baseline to support several of IF Campus, suggesting the advantages of using environmental management practices in order to improve environmental performance in these public educational, research and extension institutions. It was concluded that there is no environmental management in the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology that meets the requirements of sustainability and that the Environmental Evaluation Index of the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology (IADAIFE) for four Campi was very weak and for 78 Campi was weak.

A didática na educação profissional técnica de nível médio no Instituto Federal do Paraná / The didactics in technical secondary education at the Federal Institute of Paraná

A didática na educação profissional técnica de nível médio no Instituto Federal do Paraná / The didactics in technical secondary education at the Federal Institute of Paraná

Faculty work on Federal Institutes in the context of higher education expansion

Faculty work on Federal Institutes in the context of higher education expansion

The present paper presents and discusses some of the results of a research conducted in 2015, which analyzed the process of rearrangement of the Federal Professional and Technical Education Network in the context of the expansion of higher education, as well as its impact on the work of Federal Institute faculty members. It sought to identify what interfered with higher-education teaching, in order to understand the conditions, advantages, problems and hindrances found by teachers in their professional exercise. Research was qualitative in nature, and used documentary research, observation and interviews as data collection tools. The study evidenced that higher-education offer in the midst of professional and technical education reform had been consolidating in the Federal Professional and Technical Education Network since 2008, by means of Federal Institutes, which have acted as higher-education expansion agents. The experience under study was the rearrangement process, also called ifetization, of the Instituto Federal do Norte de Minas Gerais [Federal Institute of Northern Minas Gerais] (IFNMG), with an emphasis on the work of faculty members in undergraduate programs. As it happened, expansion placed teachers under insufficient work conditions, as it failed to provide them the necessary means. However, faculty members were expected to have a multi- functional profile, with a view to develop multiple tasks and fill institutional gaps. Research revealed the peculiarities in teaching work conditions in the institution’s higher education programs, and also demonstrated the existence of more general conditions currently in place for these workers.

whose data have been collected by primary source (questionnaires) and secondary sources. In the universe of 263 evaded and canceled students, 37% replied to the survey instrument. The results have shown that students’ average age was 31; that 49% of them were taking their second graduation course; that 47% were public servants and 59% attended private schools. The research has shown that both the difficulties to handle work and studies si- multaneously and the difficulties to manage more than one graduation course are the main facts that cause the school drop-out. The studied occurrences didn’t present relation to vocational factors or academic matters as a cause for evasion.

Using Flipped Classroom Approach to Explore Deep Learning in Large Classrooms

Using Flipped Classroom Approach to Explore Deep Learning in Large Classrooms

In recent decades, the student-centered learning approach has shown significant learning gains and has reformed teaching styles in many higher educational institutions globally. Over the past 30 years, more flexible, student-centered classroom teaching methods have been advocated based on the concepts of “discovery” learning and “active” learning (Greitzer, 2002). However, on the other end of the spectrum, in many developing countries, including Malaysia, the teacher- centered learning approach is still widely used and preferred. The teacher-centered learning approach uses lecture-based instruction which is economical and viable for teaching a large number of students at a time. Lecture-based instruction is where the teacher takes the active role of dispensing knowledge in a classroom. The propagation of information is in a one-way direction. In such an environment, the students are passive learners, where they rely on learning by listening, memorizing, and on the repetition of the taught knowledge. The major shortcoming in passive learning is that students only have a basic recollection of knowledge - which means they have merely achieved a low level of thinking skill. To attain a higher and conceptual level of thinking, the students need to take responsibility for their own learning and become active knowledge seekers. The student-centered learning approach emphasizes engaging learners to structure their learning to include applying their current class work or experience when they collaborate to solve problems, and make sense of their learning. With this approach, students become active learners and the teacher’s role now moves to that of being a facilitator by initiating classroom discussions to ensure that all the students achieve understanding for meaningful and effective learning (Goh, 2012). The student-centered approach should be at the heart of our educational system and this calls for a paradigm shift in higher educational institutions in Malaysia - to move from the teacher-centered approach to the student-centered approach.

Although the approaches are differentiated, these studies claimed the existence of psychical suffering among researchers and students, what demands a higher investment on research, in order to better characterize each of these groups, their sufferings and their rank in the scientific field. In our opinion, this is a debate of interest of both clinicians and academics, as, beyond its scien- tific results, it may shed lights on the working process in science.

Training of Tutors of the Institute of Distance Education in teaching and learning methodologies

Training of Tutors of the Institute of Distance Education in teaching and learning methodologies

Currently, in Mozambique, the use of digital technologies in the teaching-learning process demonstrates a reality with different or no levels of influence of technology in higher education. In this context, it is essential to distinguish the disparity between the use of digital technologies and their interaction in the teaching-learning process, as it would be a mistake to confuse the concepts of technology and pedagogy. In this context, the identification of a technological society must be accompanied by an awareness of the need to include in the school curricula the skills necessary to deal with the new educational dynamics. From the relationship between the digital world and pedagogy, in a perspective that encompasses education, training, school, technology and digital culture, this article was conceived with the aim of describing the training of tutors, from the Distance Education Institute (DEI), about teaching and learning methodologies. The training offered to tutors arises from the need observed by the DEI, during the face-to-face tutoring session, from the difficulties presented by tutors in relation to distance learning methodologies. In this context, given the complexity, dynamism and potential that distance education presents, there is an urgent need to train the respective tutors.

Inclusion: Still an Evolving Term from an International Perspective

Inclusion: Still an Evolving Term from an International Perspective

Most recently, the Salamanca Statement (UNESCO, 1994) has been the driving force behind inclusive practices in the United Kingdom. It was adopted by delegates representing 92 governments and 25 international organizations. “Inclusive education is now firmly established as the main policy imperative with respect to children who have Special Educational Needs (SEN) or disabilities. It is championed as a means to remove barriers, improve outcomes and remove discrimination” (LINDSAY, 2003, p. 3). Even though inclusion has been the key policy effecting practice, citizens are aware of the fact that two major models exist when discussing inclusion as it is implemented in different areas of the UK. Some areas lean toward a ‘medical model’ of inclusion, where those in the medical profession view inclusion through a lens that focuses attention more on the impairment based on the medical diagnosis. A second model is considered to be a ‘social model’ of inclusion, which takes more into account the environmental factors that may come into play when educating children with SEN.

Research Priorities for Medical Toxicology in Low and Middle Income Countries

Research Priorities for Medical Toxicology in Low and Middle Income Countries

Dr. Afshari’s suggestion about the need for epidemiological studies should be regarded as highly important (1). These studies should be prospective and community-based rather than hospital or poison centre based. Unless we know the pattern of poisonings, it will not be possible to formulate the guidelines for treatment and research as poisonings vary in different countries and in different areas of a country (2). Depending on pattern, the treatment and research guidelines can be devised and scarce resources can be allocated. The acute poisonings in developing countries are very often due to toxic chemicals. This is because there is a lack of control on availability of chemicals as laws do exist but implementation is lacking (2). Although specific antidote is available for majority of them, mortality remains high because treatment is often delayed due to non-availability of proper centres and lack of antidotes. Therefore, it is necessary to train health care professionals and to provide better awareness in general public regarding risks of poisonings. Furthermore, not only resources are lacking, wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

da Silva Santos et al analyzed the acceleration, velocity and direction of movement in paraplegic wheelchair basketball players and conclude that wheelchair basketball athletes moved their body faster in the left/right direction. This result suggests that postural control is direction-dependent for the wheelchair-bound individual. In another paper from the same institution, a joint project between the Division of Psychology and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecol- ogy, Juhas et al perform an extensive review of major depression in obstetrics patients, comparing out-patients vs. hospitalized patients and draws attention to the fact that ward patients may be less well evaluated for risk. Their results indicate a definite need for periodical evaluation of depressive symptomatology in ward patients in order to provide adequate treatment for this population. In a another joint project, this time from the Institute of Psychiatry, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Federal Fluminense University, King et al analyze the different responses of patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia vs. healthy controls to an emotionally charged story and find that their respective memories retain quite different aspects of what they see and hear. Ribeiro et al, from the Midwestern State University, Parana´, Brazil, describe a novel property of aqueous extracts of Uvarana (Cordyline dracaenoides Kunth). Uvarana has been used from time immemorial namely its capacity to raise the pain threshold to a noxious thermal stimulus. In yeat another joint project, Alonso et al from the Departments of Orthopedics, Federal University of Sa˜o Paulo and Sao Paulo University Medical College, compare inter- and intra-rater reliability on the assessment of shoulder rotation using goniometry and biophotogrammetry. They found that both procedures are reliable and reproducible, but have shown biophotogram- metry to be more reliable.
