Implementation of an Interdisciplinary Approach to Promote Workers Global Health Status in the Oil Industry, Brazil (2006–2015)

During the period 2006 to 2015 under study there was a strong investment in public policies to control the CNCDs in Brazil. Changes were adopted by different domains of society either public or private institutions. In accordance to this, the oil industry incorporated company wide initiatives and allowed healthier life practices to be stimulated in the labour context, generating positive and improved health outcomes, when compared to the ones corresponding to the Brazilian population. The oil Worker Health Service studied in Bahia, Brazil, carried out specific health strategies, integrating interdisciplinary health interventions centred on the worker, which allow a personalized monitoring of individual needs of workers, something that Brazilian public policies are not able to accomplish. Reported positive results presented in this study are able to sustain the success of such initiatives. It is important to note that the main objective of this interdisciplinary health approach was achieved, namely the improvement of the test group health indicators, with exception of two interconnected indicators: coronary risk and high blood pressure, whose negative results are explained considering the workers sociodemographic profile. The logarithmic prediction trend lines indicate that, in the future, this type of interdisciplinary approach centred in the needs of workers will result in potential health gains, namely in the reduction of workers with coronary risk and high blood pressure, two of the main causes of death in the world.

Food Tolerance in Patients Submitted to Gastric Bypass: The Importance of Using an Integrated and Interdisciplinary Approach

Food Tolerance in Patients Submitted to Gastric Bypass: The Importance of Using an Integrated and Interdisciplinary Approach

Among specific recommendations for patients sub- mitted to bariatric surgery, red meat consumption is a priority since it is a highly bioavailable protein source containing important micronutrients such as vitamin B complex and minerals such as iron and zinc [18]. However, most studies report that difficulty eating red meat is a limiting factor that hinders better adaptation of these patients in both the short and long term [18]. Thus, an integrated and interdisciplinary follow-up with nutri- tionists, speech therapists, and psychologists that focus on evaluating mastication and eating techniques seems to reduce nutritional risks.

Uma abordagem interdisciplinar para obtenção da melhor função aproximada para ajuste de dados / An interdisciplinary approach for best approaching data adjustment function

Uma abordagem interdisciplinar para obtenção da melhor função aproximada para ajuste de dados / An interdisciplinary approach for best approaching data adjustment function

In this work, important concepts from Exact Sciences, Computing and Engineering act in an interdisciplinary way to obtain the best approximate solution for a physical experiment. The aim of this paper is to show how different theories can be used to solve problems in engineering. More specifically, the Least Squares method (studied in Linear Algebra), the uncertainties and interval operations (studied in Interval Mathematics) and the Python language (studied in computation) will be used to solve an interval system that provides the best approximate function that adjusts a data set from a physical experiment in which a car was moving at zero acceleration under a horizontal air track. By doing this type of approach using Interval Mathematics, we seek to infer how the uncertainties arising from the experiment, as well as the errors generated by the representations and operations of computer numbers, interfere with the obtained result. For this, it was necessary to use the Python for Extended Scientific Computing (Python-XSC) library, which is based on the interval arithmetic structure and provides functions for the resolution of interval linear systems. The application of this study proved to be very efficient and easy to use, besides encouraging engineering students to seek innovative solutions through the interdisciplinarity of the theories studied in the area.

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO THE STUDY OF COLOUR IN PORTUGUESE MANUSCRIPT ILLUMINATIONS

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO THE STUDY OF COLOUR IN PORTUGUESE MANUSCRIPT ILLUMINATIONS

In this approach some aspects were considered: 1) to create own samples of medieval materials, either when they are not available commercially, or to compare those made to the marketed ones; 2) to understand the difficulties, or lack thereof, in producing some materials in order to appreciate their profuse or modest use in the illuminations, as well as the quality of the illuminations; 3) to realize various possibilities of making the same colour paint with different sorts of pigments or binding media, different quantities of pigments when applied in mixture; 4) to experiment with some paint techniques, for instance mixing the pigments in the same paint or applying different paints in layers; 5) to evaluate the behaviour of the paints applied on the parchment over time; 6) to develop a broad palette which would make possible a visual comparison with the illuminations of the manuscripts, either by naked eye colour comparison or by microscope surface comparison; 7) to build a database for each technique that would be used in the characterization of the illuminations: µ-EDXRF, µ- Raman, µ-FTIR, HPLC-DAD,UV-Vis and µ-spectrofluorimetry.

Smile aesthetics: an interdisciplinary approach

Smile aesthetics: an interdisciplinary approach

The best approach to lip augmentation depends on the nature of the defect and the subject's aesthetic desires. For genetically thin lips, structural augmentation with a deeper-placed filler followed by volume correction with a superficial filler is ideal. For pure cosmetic enhancement of lips, a superficially placed filler with emphasis on the white roll and expansion of the vermilion can be the choice. Female lips are, on average, a little fuller than male lips. They bulge forward more than male lips – In other words, they are slightly more “pouty.” Female lips are not noticeably bigger when seen by a frontal point of view, but they do bulge forward more as seen from the side. Over volumizing of the male lip can result in feminization of the area (Luthra, 2015).

DNA for nano-bio scale computation of chemical formalisms using Higher Order Logic (HOL) and analysis using an interdisciplinary approach

Inspite of numerous promising preliminary results obtained the in “R-D” computing domain, this particular field still remains an imaginary interdisciplinary art rather than science, most “Reaction-Diffusion” processors are produced on an ad hoc basis without structured top-down approaches, mathematical verification, rigorous methodology, relevant to other domains of advanced computing and computer hardware (this could be nanobio- wetware for implementation!) design. It is in this context, we have planned to consider HOL for rigourous analysis. There is a need to develop a coherent theoretical foundations for “Reaction-Diffusion” computing in chemical media or bio- chemical media, and adapt new computational substrates. As Einstein said,” Imagination is more important than domain knowledge” 10-16,18 .

Uma abordagem interdisciplinar no ensino da física por meio da matemática e dos recursos tecnológicos / An interdisciplinary approach in teaching physics through mathematics and technological resources

This article shows the results of an interdisciplinary propose in basic education. Based on an educational practice “Science Fair” which involved a case study about problem solving in the natural sciences (Physics), applying mathematical modeling and using computational tools. Using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach and open source GeoGebra, students developed all the stages of a project applying mathematical concepts to a real problem, which led to the their cultural enrichment and, especially, specific skills relevant to the modern world such as science and technology, which are often overlooked in the traditional approach. Therefore, the results demonstrate the positive aspects of interdisciplinarity and the use of technology, so present in students' daily lives, stimulating science learning in the practical-pedagogical experience of the school environment.

The importance of interdisciplinary approach to urban agriculture and transitions in food systems: research on Lisbon Metropolitan Area

The importance of interdisciplinary approach to urban agriculture and transitions in food systems: research on Lisbon Metropolitan Area

The interdisciplinary approaches involved in these projects introduce useful insights envisaging the design and tran- sition of food socio-technic systems by stressing the fol- lowing aspects: i) the importance of land use devoted to agriculture and food production in LMA both in historical (MEMO) and current contexts (Periurban); ii) The acknowl- edgement of the diversity of land use and food production (Periurban and MEMO). Besides these insights, Periurban and MEMO can also contribute to the definition of a meth- odological approach to the research of the transition to- wards a sustainable sociotechnical system in food-related areas and activities. In fact, the adoption of a multiplicity of methods and techniques within those projects provided an opportunity to realize the importance of the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods as well as the visual and cartographic representation of land use and the inquiry to habits, sociodemographic dynamics and perceptions of urban population regarding territory and urban planning.

The interdisciplinary nature of <i>SOIL</i>

The interdisciplinary nature of <i>SOIL</i>

Abstract. The holistic study of soils requires an interdisciplinary approach involving biologists, chemists, ge- ologists, and physicists, amongst others, something that has been true from the earliest days of the field. In more recent years this list has grown to include anthropologists, economists, engineers, medical professionals, military professionals, sociologists, and even artists. This approach has been strengthened and reinforced as cur- rent research continues to use experts trained in both soil science and related fields and by the wide array of issues impacting the world that require an in-depth understanding of soils. Of fundamental importance amongst these issues are biodiversity, biofuels/energy security, climate change, ecosystem services, food security, human health, land degradation, and water security, each representing a critical challenge for research. In order to es- tablish a benchmark for the type of research that we seek to publish in each issue of SOIL, we have outlined the interdisciplinary nature of soil science research we are looking for. This includes a focus on the myriad ways soil science can be used to expand investigation into a more holistic and therefore richer approach to soil research. In addition, a selection of invited review papers are published in this first issue of SOIL that address the study of soils and the ways in which soil investigations are essential to other related fields. We hope that both this editorial and the papers in the first issue will serve as examples of the kinds of topics we would like to see published in SOIL and will stimulate excitement among our readers and authors to participate in this new venture.

A low-cost, hands-on module to characterize antimicrobial compounds using an interdisciplinary, biophysical approach.

A low-cost, hands-on module to characterize antimicrobial compounds using an interdisciplinary, biophysical approach.

Before the sessions, all participants received a handout describing the experimental module (S1 Text). In the first section, the instructor provided a brief overview of the global problem and challenges of antibiotic resistance and the imperative need to discover novel antimicrobial compounds. This opened a brief discussion on recent efforts towards exploring natural, biolog- ical, and indigenous resources as antimicrobial agents [6–9]. Importantly, this overview em- phasized the key feature of our laboratory module, whereby an interdisciplinary approach could aid the discovery and identification of novel antimicrobial compounds, especially those from natural sources.

The discrepancy between these findings and those of the present study may be attributable to the fact that the patients in the current study were provided with intervention by an interdisciplinary team from the initiation of treatment, thus preventing the factors associated with SV from interfering with treatment. Although access to health care in Brazil is theoretically universal, social barriers often prevent practical access to specialized treatment. Use of an interdisciplinary approach in the current study likely allowed patients who may have faced social barriers to pass through them to gain access to specialized care (i.e., prevented selection bias), allowing them to realize better outcomes than had they been treated by a specialist.

Development and Validation of an Interdisciplinary Worker’s Health Approach Instrument (IWHAI)

Development and Validation of an Interdisciplinary Worker’s Health Approach Instrument (IWHAI)

The IWHAI development stage included a group of 10 WH experts, representing 20% of each profession, i.e., physicians, nurses, nutritionists, dentists and physical educators, all with more than five years of experience in the WH area. The literature review enabled the analysis of previously referenced instruments, as well as the theoretical framework for the development of a new instrument. IWHAI is methodologically based on the Quantitative Instrument for Sanitary Inspection (QISI) [42], both in terms of the process of developing and structuring the instrument, as well as in what relates the concept of potential risk. In its final version, IWHAI was structured with five dimensions, composed of 43 indicators, on a scale of 0–4, totalling 215 sub-indices with closed response coding. Each indicator was associated with an interval scale of 0–4, where zero represents non-existent or inadequate risk control and four represents optimal risk control, with the following graduation: 0—non-existent or inadequate; 1—tolerable; 2—reasonable; 3—good and 4—optimum. IWHAI proposes multidisciplinary assessments, encompassing an interdisciplinary approach. For each technical area, i.e., medicine, nursing, nutrition, dentistry and physical education, the main indicators of risk control for WH were defined. Finally, to reduce the subjectivity of the evaluator, the coding of closed answers for each sub-index of the scale was developed, with five possibilities for each indicator. Assessments comprised seven eight-hour meetings with professionals from each technical area and five meetings with the interdisciplinary team. For the classification of the indicators as critical and non-critical, a panel was developed with professionals, with each member giving an opinion about the indicator in question, thus obtaining a final group consensus. Of these indicators, 56.0% were classified as critical. At the basis of the IWHAI development, the need to establish a guidance manual that is able to assist health professionals in the task of filling each indicator was identified.
