Induced Abortion and Women’s Reproductive Health in India

Induced Abortion and Women’s Reproductive Health in India

from reproductive tract infections, or RTIs. 5 Coupled with RTIs, induced abortion plays a critical role in the reproductive health of Indian women. In many instances, induced abortions—and more specifically, sex-selective abortions take place after 12 weeks of gestation, which is not safe for the health of the women. This may lead to obstetric morbidity and infertility, as well as risking the life of the women. 6 Given the fact that women in India have little control over their own fertility and also have poor health, the chances are very high that they may experience abortion, which includes both spontaneous and induced abortion, and perhaps more than once. 7 The reproductive health risk of induced abortion multiplies manifold if a woman has to resort to it repeatedly. 8-9 The relationship between induced abortion and reproductive health problems has been hardly explored in the Indian context. Using nationally representative cross sectional population based data; this study examines the association between induced abortion and women’s reproductive health in India.

Abstract Sexual and reproductive health rights

For a better understanding of this context, a study was carried out addressing the work of teams in sexual and reproductive health care. The subject of the investigation were the transversal competences of the health team required for sex- ual and reproductive health in primary health- care. For such, an approximation to the concepts of competence was necessary, which have been described in the literature as the capacity to ar- ticulate and mobilize knowledge, skills and atti- tudes, putting them into action to solve problems and face unpredictable situations in a certain work situation and cultural context 9 . CSP25/15: Population and Reproductive Health

One of the significant challenges in the area of improving reproductive health is the interface of cultures and belief systems with scientific and technological knowledge to produce positive changes. This can occur only if the health system is able to separate traditional practices from those with scientific bases. For example, in one Colombian institution, astute practitioners observed that problems including neonatal death resulted from obligating indigenous women to assume the gynecological position for birth. Norms were changed and training was provided to new professionals to permit adaptation to the client-preferred position, resulting in healthier and less problematic mothers and babies. In Ecuador, one educational institution has secured resources from the Inter-American Development Bank to conduct a multidisciplinary social and clinical monitoring study of local preferences and beliefs around the birthing process. This involves in-depth interviews and filming of traditional practices and extensive technologically-supported monitoring of the mother and fetus, which can be then used to educate future generations of health professionals as well as to develop new technology and norms to facilitate this important interface between culture and scientific knowledge.

Abstract Sexual and reproductive health rights

Abstract Sexual and reproductive health rights

Abstract Sexual and reproductive health rights were developed recently as a result from the move- ments held for Human Rights and citizenship. Delimitations of this subject have not been ex- plored in Brazil yet, even though the importance of developing skills related to this subject is recog- nized. This paper aims to construct a Sexual and Reproductive health transversal skills framework based on specialists’ point of view. A mix methods descriptive exploratory research with the use of the Delphi Technique was developed with 41 special- ists in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Three rounds of data gathering were carried out. Of the 36 skills resulting from the qualitative analysis, 32 achieved a general consent and were classified in four domains: ethics and professional principles; leadership and management; commu- nity work, health and education, counseling and evaluation; and health care. Results corroborate skills content recommended by the international literature. These skills, which are transversal, may support the development of actions and practices of the health professionals concerning sexual and reproductive health care.

Temas abordados nos grupos educativos de saúde sexual e reprodutiva: uma revisão integrativa Themes addressed in educational groups of sexual and reproductive health: an integrative review

Regarding the topics discussed in educational groups that deal with sexual and reproductive health, among ten articles only three (30%) dealt with the explanation of the anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive organs; eight (80%) addressed contraception, sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS); five (60%) focused on the theme of sexuality; three highlighted the sexual and reproductive rights; four highlighted family planning. Only one study did not classify emergency contraception within the contraception. The target audience of studies with more representativity was composed by women, adolescents and health professionals (Table 2). Literature indicates that the existence of the risk of exposure to STDs and AIDS in the context of marital relationships, the lack of dialogue between the couple, unshared and insecure reproductive health, makes this theme not deeply discussed in the family. 18 Thus, there

A total of 118 responses were obtained during the eight days of the sample. The percentage obtained from 11% has no dogs / cats at home and 89% have at least one dog and / or cat at home. 55% of tutors have only one cat, 39.1% of tutors have only one dog, 19% of respondents said they used injectable contraceptives on their own at least once. It was found that the hormone-based injectable contraceptive method is still used in females, although tutors know the risks of using it, and it is essential to carry out educational outreach with the community to raise awareness of contraceptive methods.

The birth of reproductive health: a difficult delivery.

The birth of reproductive health: a difficult delivery.

Moreover, there are other issues competing for international funding, most notably AIDS. At the time of the Cairo Conference, 20 million people were infected with HIV; today the number has grown to an estimated 38 million [9]. AIDS threatens to derail the Cairo Conference plan of action. Through maternal-to- child transmission, and wide- scale orphaning, HIV threatens to reverse small successes at reducing infant and child mortality. By killing off teachers and sapping household incomes, AIDS is sabotaging education. By killing off scarce medical workers and overwhelming fragile health care systems, the disease is compromising reproductive health services. Gender equity is undermined, as women and girls bear the brunt of the epidemic, as caregivers, breadwinners, or patients themselves.

Women’s Health/Reproductive Health on the U.S.-Mexico Border

Women’s Health/Reproductive Health on the U.S.-Mexico Border

Given the importance of Women’s Health/Reproductive Health issues in the context of cooperative binational health efforts, evidenced in part by the creation of the task force within the Health Group of the Binational Commission, the Pan American Health Organization decided to conduct a review of the cooperation existing between Mexico and the United States in the border context relating to this health issue. It is hoped that the results obtained by means of this review may serve as a reference for groups, agencies, and institutions in identifying specific areas within the field of women’s health/reproductive health where it may be feasible to initiate or strengthen binational cooperative projects in the border region.

Sexual and reproductive health rights of Colombian IDPs

Sexual and reproductive health rights of Colombian IDPs

Forced displacement in Colombia has different impacts on different groups. Until now, there has not been a suffi- ciently flexible approach to deal adequately with these different impacts. For the past 18 months UNFPA has been implementing an adolescent-focused IDP sexual and reproductive health care programme in IDP settlements in the cities of Barranquilla, Cartagena and Sincelejo on the Caribbean coast and in the south-eastern city of Villavicencio. The objective of the project is to

Reproductive health in emergencies: new initiatives, renewed commitment

Recruiting and retaining health workers has proven challenging in northern Uganda, where those working in conlict zones often lack the training to provide quality RH care. In response, Pius Okong, President of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Uganda, suggests that associations of health care professionals should establish emergency response teams equipped to organise RH services in crisis settings, as well as create a database of local providers trained in RH care in emergency settings, in order to facilitate a rapid response. 14

The impact of clinical social franchising on health services in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

The impact of clinical social franchising on health services in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

This review suggests some contexts within which franchising is an effective intervention, and can guide future program develop- ment. While franchises are often of equivalent or lower quality than public clinics [20,25], they are typically of higher quality than non-franchised private providers [21,25]. Franchising may be a particularly useful strategy in areas where a large unregulated private sector provides the majority of health services. Franchising can also be implemented effectively by governments to strengthen public sector health care delivery [27,33], and is an efficient way to introduce new services into existing private practices. Our review also highlights new health service areas that are successfully being delivered in the franchising model, such as child health and TB services, suggesting the need for continued expansion of social franchising beyond the traditional emphasis on reproductive health care. Understanding where social franchises can play the greatest role in improving health care delivery, and which models of franchising are the most effective in improving health outcomes, will more effectively target services.

Testicles were measured in the axial and longitudinal planes, and at least two measurements of width, length and thickness were obtained. The higher measure of each dimension was recorded and used to calculate the testicular volume according to the formula: width × length × thickness × 0.52. In postpubertal adolescents and male adults, testicular atrophy by testicle ultrasonography was deined when the testicular volume was inferior to 7 mL. 19

Schooling age adolescents’ knowledge concerning contraceptive methods: challenges / O conhecimento de adolescentes escolares sobre os métodos contraceptivos: desafios

The strategy of selecting different colors allowed each unit to be identified and grouped, allowing an overview of the theme, giving rise to the following registration units: family in the contraceptive information process; the lecture and the class as exhibitors of contraceptives; knowledge of contraceptive methods; advantages and disadvantages of the methods. These units supported the construction of the thematic unit Reproductive Health: Contraceptives in the daily life of adolescence, which gave rise to the following thematic category: The expression of adolescents towards contraceptive methods: a challenge for health services. The research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee from the Hospital Universitário Antônio Pedro (HUAP) [University Hospital] of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), under the Protocol No. 1.349.794/2015, as provided by Resolution No. 466/2012 from the National Health Council. To achieve participation, all adolescents signed the Informed Consent Form (ICF), complementing with the authorization of the respective guardians and/or legal representatives who also signed the ICF.
