The Development and Current Status of Library and Information Science Education in Japan

Library and information science (LIS) education of Japan has been established in the early 20 th century, but destroyed during the World War II. Thanks to the help provided by the United States, the LIS education revived. However, it influenced a lot, especially the thoughts of public librarianship in the Library Law of Japan. At present, 8 universities offer formal LIS degree program and over 200 universities or colleges offer LIS courses as qualifications for public librarians. This article will introduce the curriculum designs, full-time faculty, and program characteristics of Library and Information Science in Japan.

From the literature 29 relevant documents were recovered, these 20 are international work and 9 national, most found in Google Scholar, Scopus and LISTA. International studies show an approach largely focused on the study of users, since national efforts integrate different metrics application possibilities in the archives. The results showed few studies on the subject, which shows a lack in the field of Information Science, especially in Archivology, but also identifies the potential development of future work.

Development of Information Ethics in Library and Information Science in Taiwan

Development of Information Ethics in Library and Information Science in Taiwan

We are facing a growing concern on the social and ethical issues that comes from the increasing reliance on the information technology in information era. Findings of past research point out that Information Ethics is an important issue, and should become a mandatory course for Library and Information Science education. However, the field of Library and Information Science is still developing to value the concept of information ethics and surrounding issues. This article introduces the origin and deinitions of information ethics, and analyzes its development in education and research in the ield of Library and Information Science in Taiwan over the sixteen years from 1994-2010. We hope to arrive at a further understanding on the issues ofinformation ethics” and to establish conformity of using the term “information ethics”. In addition, we also hope that the results of the study will serve as a reference for educators and researchers in promoting information ethics. Finally, we propose suggestions for the planning of teaching and curriculum direction.

Some views on the development of professional library education in Brazil

Brazil has therefore not been alone in recognising the need to raise the professional nature of library education and to look for ways of gaining that all important status of academic quality alongside other professions. EDITORIAL: In and Beyond This Issue(Vol.53 No.1)

This new year of 2016 will be another important milestone for the development of academic journals in Taiwan. Let’s take a look at the history. In 2008 we for the irst time had an oficial ranking system for journals in the ield of library and information sciences, and journals had been categorized into three levels according to qualities—irst degree, second and third, respectively. Later we had another adjustment to label these four levels as A, B, C and D. However, from this year of 2016, there will be a major change regarding the journal ranking system in Taiwan charged by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). It is called “New Policy of Journal Ratings in Humanities and Social Sciences”, which announces a two-year (2016-2017) re-ranking of journals in Humanities and Social Sciences, and incorporation of the collection policies of THCI Core and TSSCI, for avoiding redundant and repeated applications for being collected into these databases. The major changes in this new policy include:

Jesse Shera and his contribution to the field of Library and Information Science

Jesse Shera and his contribution to the field of Library and Information Science

Abstract: This paper aims to present the contribution of Jesse Shera to the field of Library and Information Science (LIS). Through a theoretical revision it intends to address aspects related to the movements which are influential in the humanistic part of Information Science, permeating its historical aspects, including its consolidation and highlighting the movement known as the Chicago School, which exerted a great influence on the humanistic repercussion of the discussed field of study. We discuss curiosities about Jesse Hauk Shera, his life and his works. Finally, we show the influences of Jesse Shera on the fields of the current LIS and offer ways in which new research may be developed based on the theoretical revision carried out, in order to encourage other researchers to have a closer look at the relevance Shera in this field.

Joint Analysis of the Discount Factor and Payoff Parameters in Dynamic Discrete Choice Games

Joint Analysis of the Discount Factor and Payoff Parameters in Dynamic Discrete Choice Games

We show that switching costs can be identi…ed, in a closed-form, independently of the discount factor and speci…cation of the remaining components of the payo¤ function. It may not come as a surprise that such result requires some restrictions on the payo¤s as well as the dependence structure of the controlled Markov process. However, the conditions we impose can be motivated empirically and have been frequently assumed in the empirical literature. Speci…cally, we assume that, whether a player may incur a switching cost in each period is only determined by her own action. The state variables, such as past actions of all players, can otherwise a¤ect today’s switching costs in an arbitrary way. We also require that the remaining components of the payo¤ function do not depend on past actions (this can be relaxed to allow dependence of a …nite time lag). The latter condition is satis…ed by typical payo¤ components. E.g. variable pro…ts that are determined by the competition between players depend only on those present in the game (for instance a Cournot or an auction game), as well as …xed operating costs. We also limit the feedback of past actions in the Markov process. We assume that the past actions do not a¤ect the transition law of future states conditional on today’s actions and states. Our conditional independence requirement is a testable assumption, and is weaker than the frequently assumed condition that state variables other than actions are strictly exogenous. Examples of empirical models that satisfy these assumptions can be found in the applications cited above amongst many others.

Mapping of ETDs in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) Global database (2014-2018)

various entities such as universities, departments, types of degree, and geographical area with respect to ETDs followed by tagging of the corpus using topic modeling. 8 core topics (tags) namely children literature; academic library; information retrieval; archival science; user study; digital library; library leadership; and digital communication were identified which fitted the corpus meticulously. Furthermore, each ETD was broken down into various topic proportions of percentage probabilities to segregate on the basis of the modelled topics. These findings can be mentioned on the PQDT Global website which can ultimately help the user in faster information retrieval and could also be used to provide recommendation service on the basis of their search or reading habits. The major limitations of topic modeling in the study include identification of an appropriate number of topics for the data in advance before performing the LDA; the inherent incompetence of Dirichlet to correlate among topics; and lastly, the manual interpretation and labelling of topics .

Determinants and Consequences of the Website Perceived Value

Determinants and Consequences of the Website Perceived Value

rich in value. Experiential value perceptions are based upon interactions involving either direct usage or distanced appreciation of goods and services. These interactions provide the basis for relativistic preferences held by the individual involved (Holbrook and Coffman, 1995). These preferences may be intrinsic_when the experience helps the shopper to realize some of his purposes_ or extrinsic when the experience is enjoyed for its own sake (Babin and Darden, 1995; Batra and Ahtola, 1991). Besides, they may be experienced as the consequence of active (the consumer assumes the role of co- producer) or reactive (that occurs when the individual simply apprehends, appreciate, or responds to an object) interactions with the product/service. The following experiential value matrix developed by Malhotra et al (2001) represents an integration of the intrinsic/extrinsic and active/reactive dimensions.

Abstract: This paper identifies the appropriation of Jesse Shera made by the field of library sciences and information science through citations using specialized scientific production. It also contributes to the field with the presentation of a bibliography of the author. The works were retrieved using five databases: the Reference Database of Articles from Periodicals in Information Science (Base de Dados Referenciais de Artigos de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação, BRAPCI), the BENANCIB repository (Repositório das Apresentações e Palestras nos Encontros Nacionais de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informação, Repository of Presentations and Lectures at the National Meetings of Research and Post-Graduation in Information Science), the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, the Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), and the Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA). The analysis of the material used in this research was carried out to verify in which subfields these documents are concentrated. Therefore, we adopted the subareas used for the formation of the working groups of the National Association of Research and Post-Graduation in Information Science (ANCIB). Finally, we analyzed the categories of citation in which Shera is mentioned. The contributions found were of a theoretical nature and were directed to Historical and Epistemological Studies and to Management of Information and Knowledge, approaching the areas most developed by the author in the course of his professional career. Due to the large number of citations categorized as 'confirmatory', it can be inferred that the researcher is used to legitimize an idea or affirmation of the authors who cite it. It was also possible to prepare a bibliography containing the works of formal publication by Jesse Shera composed of 130 references and compiling a rich material that may be used in future studies as a research source.

Charter Schools, Equity and Efficiency in Public Education

Charter Schools, Equity and Efficiency in Public Education

Our model is compatible with some stylized facts about charter schools. In addition to the issue of the performance difference between charter schools and traditional public schools, descriptive evidence shows that teachers in charters are on average younger, less experienced, and less qualified (degrees/certifications) and earn less than teachers in traditional public schools (Goldring, Gray, and Bitterman, 2013; Epple, Romano, and Zimmer, 2015). Moreover, Chudowsky and Ginsburg (2012) use data from the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) to compare the class sizes between charter schools and traditional public schools in major American cities, where most charter schools are located, and find that classes tend to be higher in traditional public schools (4 th and 8 th grade). 5 These stylized facts are consistent with the model

Analysis Of Lean Accounting JIT And Balance Scorecard In The Companys Lean Manufacturing

manufacturing can be exemplified make instant noodles for 5 people in the restaurant, but chef only cook once and split the 5 then the waiter gives the customer. Everyone has the desire to taste like spicy, salty, sweet it is in the table provided the spice seasoning. So here chef do cook only once even though tastes different flavor. Or the other exemplified use the concept of lean manufacturing is, if the someone want to buy and pant in the supermarket for their necessary. Only pants so it’s very waste for their, from time, fuel, pay parking place, cost, reduce energy. If their in the supermarket. They should buy other necessary such as clothes, jacket, sock foot, style t shirt, neck. And other exemplified from lean concept like is if there’s parents have four daughter want to study in the same town. The parent should rent home for their daughter better then their daughter rent room in the boarding house. So it’s reduce finance to pay a room. And also the other benefit, if the parent want to visit their daughter can meet once time in one place without wasting time. So they can keep each other to study, until the can achievement target to be bachelor. For seeking the concept lean manufacturing some expert view from dimension same thing but there’re different main point such as:

NDLTD, in contrast with many other digital libraries, is focused on graduate students and universities activities. NDLTD increases the sharing of knowledge and availability of student research for scholars, and allows preserving it electronically. It lowers costs of submitting and handling theses and dissertations, helps universities build their information infrastructure, and empowers them to unlock their information resources. It endows students with capabilities to convey a richer message through the use of multimedia and hypermedia technologies and provides a better grounding to theinformation age”. With over 120 members, varying from a range of individual universities, libraries, and consortia at the state (OhioLINK), regional (Catalunya), and national (Australia, Germany, Portugal) levels, NDLTD ultimately extends the value and use of digital libraries and contributes to the advance of that technology. ETD activities in general, and NDLTD organization, progress, growth, and evolution in particular, are described in a sourcebook on ETDs (Fox, Moxley et al. 2002) * . A

The modification process of AlSi21CuNi silumin and its effect on change of mechanical properties of the alloy

The modification process of AlSi21CuNi silumin and its effect on change of mechanical properties of the alloy

Pouring temperature belongs to very important factors in obtainment of correct results of the modification. Hypereutectoid silumins are characteristic of good castability even in temperatures close to liquidus curve, what suggests implementation of low temperature of casting. However, such method of casting creates conditions to easy coarsening of primary crystals of silicon and their non-uniform distribution on microstructure of the casting. Rate of cooling of the alloy poured into mould has also an effect on results of the modification.

Evaluation And Characterization Of Trace Metals Contamination In The Surface Sediment Using Pollution Load Index PLI And Geo-Accumulation Index Igeo Of Ona River Western Nigeria

Ona River is one of the major Rivers in Oyo State; local communities used this River for fishing and agricultural activities. From the results of this study, the evaluation and characterization of sediment quality reflects the impacts of anthropogenic activities on quality of the river. However, the continuous build-up of the metal contaminants can be checked if relevant government agencies ensure strict compliant of industrial standards which stipulate treatment of industrial waste before discharging such contaminated effluents/wastes into River. Therefore, perpetual assessment is highly recommended to minimize the potential health hazards of the people who surely depend on the River water for fishing and agricultural purposes.
