During the late 1980s, they published a number of chapters and papers on the topic of “usability engineering”. With their work they stressed a quan- titative but practical engineering approach to product design. They stressed the importance of the work context in creating usable and functional products to improve productivity. They stressed also that it is useful to integrate usability specialists in the design and implemen- tation team who aims at obtaining the best solution for the allocated resources [10]. At present, the terms “usable” and “usability engineer- ing” are used to describe well-designed products and the process by which they should be designed [18].

Turning text into research networks: information retrieval and computational ontologies in the creation of scientific databases.

The first stage comprises classic named-entity recognition using gazetteers, where elements are tagged and clusterized from the original text. These tags are automatically attributed to generic classes using the LINGO algorithm [11], thus reducing human intervention. In subsequent validation stages, a verification is conducted to determine whether the entity is valid for the proposed class domain, making use of the knowledge base Wikipedia. For an entity to be classified as valid, the term should be recognized in the Wikipedia database. If the term is not recognized, then a search is carried out for for similar terms. The top ten most similar terms are searched in the index and, if they exist, they are added to the list of valid terms. Otherwise they are considered invalid. These entities are then visually inspected by the knowledge engineer, who designs a new classification, suggests the use of new classes where the algorithm did not previously classify an element, or simply discards the elements. In addition, the automated classification is verified to ensure an accurate association between instances and their proposed classes. Of importance, our method does not assume the pre-existence of a

In the last few years, the Brazilian Journal of Physical Therapy (BJPT) has shown all of its dynamism by making the necessary changes to promote its sustained growth and fulfill its editorial mission. These changes include a substantial increase in the visibility of the Journal’s publications as a result of indexing in bibliographic databases such as SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online (2006), Periodica (2007), Scopus (2008), Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition (Thomson Scientific), Medline/PubMed (2010), and Redalyc (2011). However, improvement is a continuous process and new changes are underway to enhance the Journal’s editorial quality. We wish to explain these changes to our readers.

ENVIRAD – A Database Integration for Environmental Samples Radiological Data

The IAEA has two laboratories in the environmental field: Seibersdorf Laboratory, responsible for terrestrial samples, and the Marine Environment Laboratory (MEL), as the name suggests, for marine samples. These laboratories support the laboratories of Member States to improve the quality of analytical measurement and determination of radionuclides. They also include the development of guidelines and standards in the field of radiation protection for the environment and the development of radioecological methods to be used in radiological impact assessment. MARIS is a database of samples of radioactive contamination in the marine environments (open sea and coastal zones), specifically in seawater, particulate matter, biota and sediment. It was developed by the IAEA for the Marine Environment Laboratory. Before MARIS, the GLOMARD (Global Marine Radioactivity Database) was previously used for this purpose. The sources of all the data are published scientific papers, reports and databases created within institutes or scientific programs in the Member States and can be used with appropriate citation of sources and references [2].

Nursing strategies for the prevention of postpartum depression / Estratégias de enfermagem na prevenção da depressão pós-parto

Objective: To identify in the literature the strategies used by the nurses in the prevention of postpartum depression. Method: Integrative literature review carried out in the databases of the Virtual Health Library of the Scientific and Technical Literature of Latin America and the Caribbean, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval SystemOnline Nursing Database, through the descriptors postpartum depression and “nursing” and “Depression Postpartum” and “nursing.” Results: The sample consisted of nine studies. For the analysis, the categorization of the work by content similarity was performed, and two categories were constructed for the analysis: the host as a strategy to prevent postpartum depression and the pregnant group as a space for the exchange of experience. Conclusion: Preventing PPD is an easy-to-approach action, with low cost and feasible execution in the practice of nurses.

Large scientific repositories are supported by powerful databases and are now focusing on the shar- ing of information between organizations. A prob- lematic barrier is found in taxonomic differences and data model inconsistencies (Chavan et al., 2005); for this reason many repositories are contributing to the definition of standards to share and transfer their in- formation. The use of spatial data is also becom- ing common, as the information on the location and distribution of specimens is valuable for research in this field. As for the services presented to users, the research-oriented systems focus more on search functions to retrieve technical information from their databases; there usually isn’t much concern about the details of user interaction (Neale et al., 2007).

For the selection of articles, there was online access to the following databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), US National Library of Medicine/ National Institutes of Health (PUBMED) Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Literature Latin-American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS). The search in various databases was to broaden the scope of research and minimize potential biases. Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS) used for data collection were “Nursing”, “safe sex” and “HIV” combined through the Boolean connector “AND” with the keywords “vulnerability” and “Immune Deficiency Syndrome acquired”, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.

A method for the identification of collaboration in large scientific databases

Figure 1 shows the number of hours required to perform the entire process of collaboration identification. In a database with n = 300,000 publications, where each comparison is performed in 0.001 seconds, Levenshtein distances requires 12,500 hours to perform all the comparisons. By contrast, ISColl requires only 0.08 hours, i.e., 5 minutes. Thus, we observe an increase in the computational cost as the amount of work to be scanned increases. As exhaustive comparison methods have polynomial costs, it is infeasible for them to be adopted for the analysis of large amounts of data.

VISIBILITY OF BRAZILIAN SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS OF MATHEMATICS IN INTERNATIONAL DATABASES

- Zentralblatt MATH MathSciNet. A systematic sample of 127 articles is used from the list of mathematical journals of Qualis/CAPES. Tables with percentage by database and by Qualis stratum are presented, that pointed out, among other results, Scopus (69.3%) and MathSciNet (66.1%) as those that provide greater coverage of Brazilian scientific literature in mathematics.

Since the implementation of these systems has been massive, it is legitimate to assume that the advantages that institutions can profit of are several. One important advantage for healthcare institution’s managers is the decrease of storage costs by using digital storage instead of film based. Besides this, the system allows a faster and more reliable image retrieval along with remote access, saving much time to physicians. PACS is also a good choice because it enables an easy integration of medical images in the hospital’s information systems. Moreover, the digital transmission of medical images and reports, and an effective workflow management permits a faster diagnosis. At last, PACS allows an easier security implementation, which is a great advantage. In spite of the advantages of these systems’ implementation being major in comparison to the disadvantages, these are not null. For instance, given that these systems are extremely complex, it is possible that their end users will not be capable of efficiently use the system. Thus, it is important to continuously make an effort to simplify and improve the user interface, in spite of the system’s complexity [30, 32].

Historical data management in big databases

To better understand the system’s environment of the proposed solution, it is important having in mind some details about the PRIMAVERA’s ERP system architecture, and also about some other particular issues and remarks related to the data that is handled and its management technicalities. The ERP system is a powerful piece of software that is able to support all kinds of business activities. An example of a problem that might eventually endanger a system database is the historical information. The provenance of that type of data might be from previous records of sales, orders, inventories or any other historical information that a company might handle. Another interesting example could be the less frequently used information. The effort to keep those old records stored is quite impactful and unworthy performance wise. Besides that, if the perspective angle is the quality of the data, it certainly will not be any better. For instance, if that happens, some of the analy- sis services offered by the ERP system might not be giving quality information to users, which might jeopardise the decisions of the company. Furthermore, some of the company’s clients may have low-end systems to support the ERP system, due to the fact that some of them may just be a simple interface between business activity stores and the mainframe. Clients that have a huge amount of transactions are certainly going to have some of their machine’s performance stalled, which in most cases implies an expensive upgrade in order to run the products of the company. This is entirely undesirable, since one of the most important requirements is that the ERP must be able to be executed in the large majority of the systems with a fairly good performance. Otherwise, clients may choose a different product for supporting their activities. Bigger clients may have better resources to support their businesses, but their transaction volume is huge, which may compromise the perfor- mance of some of the client’s machines, especially if time is a key factor. Another issue is the limitations of the ERP system. Usually, these issues are related with the legacy version of the software that only allows for using a limited set of system resources. Thus, high-end machines will suffer from this issue as well as if the dimension of the data is extremely high.
