O doente paliativo é um doente com necessidades especificas, sendo a primordial a manutenção da qualidade de vida. Um fator preponderante neste facto é a presença ou ausência de dor, pelo que faz sentido efetuar uma reunião das diferentes abordagens a este sintoma. Tendo em conta que a principal abordagem terapêutica da dor é a farmacológica, e o doente em questão sofre de várias comorbilidades e sintomatologia complexa, faz sentido que o farmacêutico intervenha ao longo de todo o tratamento. Esta intervenção não se traduz apenas em otimização da terapêutica e gestão de sintomas, mas também em promoção da literacia em saúde do doente e cuidadores e otimização de custos e recursos.
