As lectinas de Canavalia brasiliensis e Cratylia argentea apresentam uma atividade protetora em uma infecção por S. Typhimurium. Esta proteção está relacionada a um mecanismo indireto de ação, através da modulação da resposta imunológica do hospedeiro por meio da regulação da liberação de óxido nítrico e citocinas. Os resultados sugerem que as lectinas podem agir sobre macrófagos/monócitos, regulando sua ativação e desta forma, influenciando em todo o processo inflamatório. Entretanto, mais estudos são necessários para confirmar o mecanismo de ação aqui proposto.
