7. Conclusão
A doença periodontal tem uma elevada prevalência nos animais de companhia. A sua etiologia primária é a acumulação de placa bacteriana nas superfícies dentárias e o seu aparecimento pode ser contrariado se forem instituídos hábitos de higiene oral e visitas regulares em medicina veterinária dentária (Debowes, 2010). No entanto, a progressão da doença periodontal depende do equilíbrio entre a agressão causada pela placa bacteriana e a resposta inflamatória de cada indivíduo a essa agressão (Lindhe, 2003). De facto, animais com estilos de vida semelhantes não manifestam necessariamente a mesma acumulação de cálculo dentário. Esta situação, demonstra que para além da implementação de medidas de prevenção, a variabilidade individual é também um fator importante no desenvolvimento e progressão desta doença (Loesche, 2001) e portanto, existirão sempre animais que em determinada altura da sua vida necessitarão da remoção do cálculo dentário acumulado. Podemos concluir então, que apenas com a realização de um protocolo semelhante ao descrito neste trabalho, se poderá devolver a estes animais,

uma cavidade oral saudável, sem presença de cálculo dentário, de halitose e de desconforto na alimentação.
