Os talos de Gracilaria birdiae apresentaram acúmulo de polissacarídeos aniônicos, amido e proteínas nas estruturas reprodutivas (citocarpos e tetrasporângios), além de diferenças na morfologia dos tilacóides, as quais sugeriram o aumento da capacidade de absorção de luz dessas células, quando comparadas aos tilacóides das células vegetativas da macroalga. Além disso, foi possível a obtenção de biomassa algácea (microtalos) a partir da germinação de carpósporos e tetrásporos sob as condições de cultivo estabelecidas em laboratório, sendo, o método de obtenção de carpósporos mais eficaz devido a maior quantidade de esporos obtidos e ao menor tempo de germinação. Portanto, podemos afirar que a obtenção de biomassa algácea, a partir de esposoros, se torna uma ferramenta biotecnológica sustentável para o desenvolvimento da maricultura de macroalgas e repovoamento de zonas costeiras degradadas.
