No contexto da Ecologia Industrial, a disponibilidade de Nr no sistema de saneamento, vem sendo considerada uma fonte promissora de nitrogênio. Assim, a gestão da urina se destaca no referente à redução do consumo de água, potencial fertilizante e redução dos gastos energéticos nos sistemas antropogênicos do ciclo do nitrogênio, aspectos importantes na discussão da sustentabilidade do modelo de gestão proposto.
A gestão do nitrogênio na rota alimentar, com o aproveitamento do nitrogênio contido na urina nos campos agrícolas, pode permitir uma redução de 19% da produção de fertilizante nitrogenado e uma redução de 24 Mt N/ano das perdas de nitrogênio para os sistemas naturais, atenuando a taxa de avanço da incorporação de nitrogênio reativo no ciclo biogeoquímico, um dos problemas planetários anteriormente discutidos.
Podem ser discutidas vantagens nos aspectos ambientais, econômicos e sociais a partir da segregação e aproveitamento da urina humana do sistema de saneamento. Os gastos econômicos com a implantação das tecnologias do Saneamento Sustentável podem ser amortizados pelo valor econômico dos nutrientes, principalmente nitrogênio, contidos na urina.
Os aspectos sociais devem ser vistos principalmente quando se analisa a realidade de regiões rurais e/ou menos favorecidas a partir da segurança alimentar e saúde pública, quando a aplicação de urina na agricultura proporciona um aumento na produção agrícola e evita poluição ambiental.
No cenário atual e futuro, a segregação da urina humana e aproveitamento do nitrogênio na produção agrícola é um caminho que deve ser considerado na busca do desenvolvimento sustentável. Evitar a incorporação de nitrogênio reativo nos sistema naturais é claramente necessário, sendo que uma vez incorporado, a possibilidade de reverter os efeitos se tornam mais difícil e caro, através da transformação o Nr para N2, a qual consome similar gasto energético da produção
Certamente, a maior ineficiência do uso de nitrogênio nos sistemas antropogênicos ocorre na produção de alimento. No entanto, devido aos efeitos já sofridos por causa das mudanças climáticas, mudanças nos modelos atuais de gestão de cada sistema devem ser efetivamente avaliadas e implantadas de forma a obter uma resposta rápida para o sistema global. A segregação da urina do sistema de saneamento e seu aproveitamento agrícola devem ser considerados uma alternativa para tal.
Tecnologias para separação da urina humana já existem para os cenários urbanos e rurais. A viabilidade econômica, para as mudanças no sistema de saneamento, deve ser considerada no contexto mais amplo, que inclua o valor econômico de mega estruturas dos sistemas convencionais e de gastos energéticos nos sistemas antropogênicos da rota alimentar, os quais refletem em gastos econômicos.
Portanto, a redução da geração de nitrogênio reativo e da incorporação no meio ambiente a partir do aproveitamento da urina humana no sistema de produção de alimento aponta um caminho promissor para a sustentabilidade dos sistemas antropogênicos da rota alimentar.
