A IC tem sido um problema de saúde pública mundial com prevalência estimada de 26 milhões de indivíduos. A análise dos dados da PNS em 2013 revelou que 1,1% de indivíduos a partir de 18 anos de idade apresenta IC, isso equivale a 1,7 milhões de pessoas.
Os sintomas e os sinais clínicos observados na IC acarretam importantes repercussões no cotidiano das pessoas, especialmente nas esferas física e psicossocial.
Nesse sentido, a SAR vem sendo utilizada em pesquisas clínicas e epidemiológicas, a qual leva em consideração dimensões físicas, psicológicas e sociais e por isso, vem sendo demonstrada sua importância como preditora de morbimortalidade na IC, principalmente no que tange à SAR precária, que foi o mais importante desfecho utilizado no conjunto de estudos avaliados. Evidenciou-se assim que a SAR precária é diretamente associada ao fato de ter o diagnóstico de IC.
Observou-se ainda baixa prevalência sobre a prática de EF entre os indivíduos com IC no país e, dentre os que praticaram, os aposentados são a maioria. Nesse contexto, a principal barreira que dificultou essa prática foi a de saúde/incapacidade, uma vez que a IC cursa com sintomas bastante limitantes. As demais barreiras observadas foram a física e a comportamental, ambas também comprometeram a aderência ao programa de EF.
No entanto, algumas limitações podem ser apresentadas. A utilização de dados de morbidade autorreferida é dependente do acesso aos serviços de saúde para o diagnóstico; assim, usuários que utilizam mais o serviço têm maior oportunidade do diagnóstico médico de IC. A PNS não tem dados sobre programas supervisionados de EF, contemplando o EF de uma maneira geral e nos últimos 3 meses, sem a prescrição do exercício comumente utilizada em programas de reabilitação cardiovascular.
Apesar dessas limitações, as informações da PNS, por serem representativas da população brasileira, são úteis para subsidiar a formulação das políticas públicas nas áreas de prevenção e promoção à saúde do Sistema Único de Saúde para indivíduos com IC.

Dessa forma, é preciso planejar ações de prevenção e promoção voltadas à IC, além do desenvolvimento de estratégias de avaliação dos programas de saúde já implementados para estímulo à prática do EF.
As estratégias de prevenção e promoção devem, portanto, atentar quanto ao combate às barreiras como fatores importantes na manutenção da prática do EF e o fisioterapeuta deve analisar as necessidades específicas dos pacientes com IC, a fim de aumentar a aderência ao EF.
