Este trabalho trouxe novas informações sobre coléteres em Rubiaceae, complementando as poucas informações existentes em literatura, principalmente quanto aos aspectos ultra-estruturais e mecanismo de secreção.

Constatou-se que embora os coléteres presentes nos ápices vegetativo e reprodutivo de Alibertia sessilis possuam o mesmo padrão morfológico – dendróide, o estudo ultra-estrutural revelou que possuem características celulares distintas que sugerem diferenças na composição química da secreção. Análises químicas são necessárias para determinar o papel biológico da secreção nas interações desta planta com o ambiente biótico e abiótico.

Embora faltem dados experimentais, pode-se sugerir que diferenças na composição da secreção contribuam com a proteção das estruturas vegetativas e reprodutivas nas diferentes épocas do ano. A secreção mista (polissacarídeos e lipídeos) produzida pelos coléteres estipulares pode estar relacionada com as condições climáticas no período do brotamento, que nesta espécie se dá entre os meses de abril a junho, período este que se caracteriza por temperatura e umidade relativa do ar mais baixas. Neste caso, a secreção mantém as estruturas jovens hidratadas, além de proteger os primórdios foliares contra predação. O início do desenvolvimento dos ápices reprodutivos inicia- se no mês de outubro, época em que as temperaturas e a umidade relativa do ar são mais elevadas. Assim, supõe-se que a secreção predominantemente lipofílica produzida pelos coléteres presentes nos órgãos reprodutivos proteja as estruturas florais em desenvolvimento contra a dessecação e predação.

Um outro aspecto importante deste trabalho foi constatar que as células do eixo central dos coléteres dendróides possuem características indicativas de secreção, sendo este aspecto geralmente negligenciado na maioria dos trabalhos consultados.

Finalmente, este trabalho mostrou que a ocorrência de coléteres dendróides em Rubiaceae não é necessariamente associada com simbiose bacteriana.
