Na Tabela 4.14 são apresentados os teores de sólidos dos afluentes e dos substratos de macroalgas utilizados no ensaio de co-digestão de resíduos alimentares com macroalgas lavadas e irradiadas, bem como o pH dos afluentes e efluentes. O efeito combinado dos dois tratamento nos sólidos das macroalgas, foi semelhante ao ocorrido com apenas a lavagem destas. O pH dos efluentes indicam que as digestões ocorreram de forma estável.
Na Figura 4.21 são apresentados os RAB ao longo do ensaio, com a duração de 15 dias.
Em relação apenas à irradiação da fração de 6 % da S. latissima, o efeito adicional da lavagem resultou num aumento significativo do RAB em 40 %.
Na Figura 4.22 estão representadas as composições do biogás ao longo do ensaio, até ao 9º dia. Em relação apenas à irradiação da fração de 6 % da S. latissima, o efeito adicional da lavagem resultou no cessamento da inibição parcial dos organismos metanogénicos. Tendo ocorrido um aumento significativo do teor de metano ao longo do ensaio (26 % ao 7º dia).

Na Figura 4.23 e Tabela 4.17 estão representados os RACH4e parâmetros cinéticos do modelo de Gompertz, respetivamente. O modelo representa com exatidão os dados laboratoriais recolhidos (R2 = 0,996-0,999) (Anexo 7).
Em relação apenas à irradiação da fração de 6 % da S. latissima, o efeito adicional da lavagem resultou num aumento significativo de 191 % do RACH4, em conjunto com uma diminuição significativa da “lagphase” (λ) em 6 dias, passando o DRmax a ocorrer 4 dias mais cedo.

Segundo Sappati et al. [110], os compostos fenólicos presentes nas macroalgas são extremamente sensíveis ao calor, e a sua atividade química pode ser significativamente alterada pelas condições de secagem das macroalgas. Neste mesmo estudo, foi avaliado o teor

de fenóis presentes na S. latissima após variados processo de secagem, tendo sido concluído, que a temperatura e humidade do processo têm um efeito significativo na redução do teor de fenóis, sendo reportado diminuições no teor destes compostos na ordem dos 90 %.

4.13 Efeito dos Pré-Tratamentos no RA
CH4da co-Digestão Anaeróbia de Resíduos Alimentares com Macroalgas.
De forma a simplificar a comparação entre tratamentos, na Figura 4.24 estão representados os RACH4 obtidos ao longo das digestões, da fração de macroalga (3 ou 6 %) que obteve o melhor resultado de RACH4 em cada tratamento aplicado, para cada macroalga;
também é incluindo o RACH4 da digestão de resíduos alimentares. De forma a melhor comparar os resultados, os valores das algas lavadas do 5-11º dia apresentados, correspondem aos valores obtidos pelo modelo de Gompertz.
A introdução da G. gracilis sem qualquer tratamento na co-digestão com de resíduos alimentares resultou numa redução do RACH4 em cerca em 50 %. Todos os tratamentos resultaram num aumento do RACH4, em relação à co-digestão do resíduo alimentar com a G.
gracilis sem tratamento não sendo contudo superiores ao RACH4 da digestão de resíduos alimentares isoladamente. A irradiação foi o tratamento que obteve o maior aumento de RACH4, em relação à lavagem, apresentou um ligeiro aumento de 14 %. Não existiu um benefício adicional pela lavagem da G. gracilis, para além da sua irradiação.Não ocorreu um aumento do RACH4, na digestão de resíduos alimentares, pela adição da G. gracilis após aplicação dos diversos tratamentos.
A introdução da S. latíssima sem qualquer tratamento prévio, na co-digestão de resíduos alimentares, resultou numa considerável redução do RACH4 em 50 %. Todos os tratamentos resultaram num aumento do RACH4, em relação à co-digestão da S. latissima sem tratamento.
A lavagem e a irradiação como tratamentos isolados apresentam o maior aumento de RACH4, relativamente à alga não tratada e ao substrato RA isolado, sem diferenças significativas A lavagem e irradiação em conjunto, não obteve um aumento do RACH4, em relação aos mesmo tratamentos aplicados isoladamente.

C ONCLUSÕES E T RABALHO F UTURO
Em relação ao efeito dos pré-tratamentos aplicados às macroalgas na sua análise termogravimétrica, apenas a lavagem da G. gracilis, resultou numa diminuição da estabilidade estrutural da macroalga.
No que diz respeito à ER de CQOS, obtida pelos diferentes pré-tratamentos aplicados às macroalgas, na co-digestão com resíduos alimentares, todos os tratamentos resultaram em aumentos da ER, no caso da G. gracilis entre 9–24 % e na S. latissima entre 5-18%.
A digestão de resíduos alimentares, apresentou um RACH4 de 172 mLCH4/gSV.
A adição da G. gracilis e da S. latissima na co-digestão de resíduos alimentares, resultou numa diminuição significativa do RACH4para ambas as macroalgas, tendo o maior resultado de fração de macroalga, de ambas as algas, alcançado apenas 50 % do valor obtido na digestão de resíduos alimentares.
A lavagem da G. gracilis e da S. latissima foi benéfica, levando a que ocorresse, em todas as frações de macroalga testadas, aumentos significativos do RACH4 na co-digestão com resíduos alimentares (no caso da G. gracilis de 59-183 %, e para S. latissima de 168-205 %).
A adição da G. gracilis lavada e da S. latissima lavada na co-digestão de resíduos alimentares, resultou nas frações de 3 e 6 % da S. latissima, num maior RACH4 de 218 mLCH4/gSV e 228 mLCH4/gSV, respetivamente, já na fração de 12 % desta alga e para as restantes frações da G. gracilis, resultou numa menor.
A irradiação dos resíduos alimentares não resultou numa alteração do RACH4 na sua digestão, em relação ao mesmo substrato sem tratamento.
A irradiação das macroalgas foi benéfica, levando a que ocorresse aumentos significativos do RACH4 na co-digestão com resíduos alimentares, em todas as frações da G.
gracilis, entre 54-172 % e, na fração de 3 % da S. latissima, ocorreu um aumento de 238 %.
A adição da G. gracilis irradiada e da S. latissima. irradiada na co-digestão de resíduos alimentares, apenas resultou num maior RACH4, na fração de 3 % da S. latissima (209 mLCH4/gSV).
A irradiação de ambos os substratos, resíduos alimentares e macroalgas, não alterou o RACH4obtido na sua co-digestão no caso da G. gracilis. Para a S. latissima resultou numa diminuição de 21 %.
A irradiação da S. latissima levou a que ocorresse na co-digestão com resíduos alimentares, uma inibição parcial dos microrganismos metanogénicos na fração de 6 % de macroalga e uma inibição total na fração de 12 %. Foi considerada a possibilidade de esta inibição ter-se devido a um aumento do teor de fenóis na S. latissima, tendo sido este provocado pela irradiação da biomassa. A lavagem adicional da S. latissima, resultou num cessamento da inibição dos microrganismos metanogénicos, ocorrida na co-digestão da fração de 6 % desta macroalga irradiada com resíduos alimentares. Foi adiantada a possibilidade do processo de secagem, associado à lavagem da S. latissima, ter resultado numa redução do teor de fenóis nesta alga.
Em suma, a adição da G. gracilis na co-digestão de resíduos alimentares, segundo todos os cenários estudados, foi contraprodutiva, resultando numa diminuição do RACH4.Por outro lado, a adição da S. latissima lavada (3 %) ou irradiada com 20 kGy (3 e 6 %) na co-digestão de resíduos alimentares foi vantajosa, resultando num aumento do RACH4.Logo, a introdução da S. latissima lavada ou irradiada (radiação ionizante) na co-digestão de resíduos alimentares, tem potencial para apresentar resultados positivos em testes de maior escala ou em fluxo contínuo.
Com base neste trabalho realizado, surgem algumas temáticas de interesse a serem exploradas, de modo a aprofundar e a melhorar o conhecimento nesta área, mais concretamente:
• Expor as macroalgas a diferentes doses e taxas de dose de radiação ionizante;
• Avaliar o possível aumento do teor de fenóis na S. latissima, quando exposta a radiação ionizante;
• Avaliar a possível diminuição do teor de fenóis na S. latissima, com a sua lavagem e secagem;
• Realizar as co-digestões em fluxo semi-contínuo ou contínuo.
• Análise custo-benefício, económica e ambiental, da introdução de macroalgas na digestão anaeróbia de resíduos alimentares, incluído o pré-tratamento de radiação ionizante e de lavagem.
• Avaliar a disponibilidade do recurso de biomassa de macroalgas em Portugal, para valorização por digestão anaeróbia.
