Title: Benefits of a functional exercise program in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis
Authors: Mariana Poli da Silva; Carmen Aparecida Malaguti de Barros.
ABSTRACT: Osteoarthritis (OA) knee is a chronic disease, potentially curative tre-atment without deteriorating, characterized by pain on movement, joint stiffness, cra-ckling evolving to decreased joint mobility and muscle weakness leading to inability of the physical integrity and reduction of quality of life. The objective is to assess whether an exercise program cinesioterapêuticos provides functional benefits to this population. Participants were elderly women with knee osteoarthritis were divided into two control groups (CG) and functional (GF). Data collection was performed by a conventional physical therapy evaluation, the WOMAC questionnaire specific for OA, the Time up and go test and Berg balance scale. Statistical analysis was performed by Student’s t test. The sample age ranged from 60 to 74 years in the TUG test and Berg both showed positive results compared before and after treatment, mainly for balance, the mean to-tal WOMAC showed a significance only in the GF state may improve the quality life. Concluding that the functional exercise program was more effective in treating these patients.
